(CNN) -- A 71-year-old Seattle man living under an assumed name has been arrested in Washington in connection with the 1957 kidnapping and murder of a 7-year-old Illinois girl, authorities said Friday.
The disappearance of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph while playing in the town of Sycamore, west of Chicago, captured national headlines and the attention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, according to news accounts published at the time.
Jack Daniel McCullough, who also used the name John Tessier, was arrested by Seattle authorities on murder charges filed in DeKalb County, Illinois, the DeKalb County State's Attorney Clay Campbell said in news release.
McCullough had been a suspect at the time of the girl's disappearance, but the case ran cold after he changed his name and joined the military, the release said.
An arrest warrant in the amount of $3 million was obtained for McCullough, who is currently being held in the King County jail in Washington awaiting extradition proceedings, the release said.
McCullough will make his first court appearance Saturday in Washington's King County, authorities said.
"This crime has haunted Sycamore for half a century," Campbell said. "We hope that the family of Maria Ridulph and this community can find some solace and closure with this arrest."

His past finally caught up with him...... as it often does. Well done all those involved in his arrest.

I admire the police officers who doggedly pursue suspects like this and don't give up on a small child.

I'm constantly amazed at what can be done to get justice, well done to all that continued to get justice for little Maria Ridulph

Re: Seattle man arrested in 1957 murder of Illinois girl
In February 1957, an 11 year-old girl called Moira Anderson disappeared while on an errand for her grandmother. Moira's grandmother lived just round the corner from my grandmother. Her sister, who lives in Australia, has never given up hope of finding out what happened. Just as that town in Illinois was affected, my home town was too by a little girl's disappearance.

Re: Seattle man arrested in 1957 murder of Illinois girl
A very small, overlooked piece of evidence led to his arrest.
An elderly man in the United States has been arrested for murdering a young girl more than 50 years ago.
The seven-year-old disappeared while playing near her home in Illinois in 1957, and her remains were found a few months later.
Jack McCullough was a suspect at the time, but he told police he had been on a train at the time of her disappearance.
But 54 years later, his ex-girlfriend found the train ticket from the day of the murder, and it was unused and unstamped.
McCullough, who is now 71, was tracked down by police to a retirement village in Seattle, where he was living under an assumed name.
