Am I right in thinking the Maxwell sons said something similar when they appeared before a Committee and said their Counsel would answer for them when they didn't want to answer.

I am looking forward to the Murdoch's appearing and I agree - this could go on for four years -maybe more!

News Corps shares "in freefall" is the way they are telling it here.

The papers have never been particularly profitable - but they were extremely useful in allowing Murdoch to influence voters.

Shareholders in News Corp are suing and want the papers sold off. No one will buy them if they weren't profitable but only Murdoch's way to pursue his own personal political agendas.

Met Chief Under Pressure Over NOTW Consultant

12:14am UK, Friday July 15, 2011
The Met Police commissioner is under pressure to explain how Scotland Yard
came to employ a former News of the World (NOTW) journalist, arrested in the
phone-hacking inquiry, as a PR consultant.

Neil Wallis, who was questioned for several hours on Thursday, was employed
as recently as last year as sick leave cover for the force's deputy director of
public affairs, a police spokesman has confirmed.
The 60-year-old's two-day-a-week contract was cancelled less than six months
before the launch of Operation Weeting - the second investigation into phone
hacking at News International.
Following the report, London Mayor Boris Johnson summoned Sir Paul Stephenson
to City Hall to explain.
The two men are said to have had a "very frank discussion" lasting nearly an
hour and a half.
"Sir Paul Stephenson reassured the Mayor that the investigation at Scotland
Yard is proceeding as swiftly and thoroughly as possible," a spokesman for Mr
Johnson said.

been saying about the scandal.

"He explained the circumstances of the hiring on a part-time, short-term
basis of Neil Wallis."
Meanwhile, Home Secretary Theresa May has written to the commissioner to get
"the full picture" regarding Mr Wallis, a Home Office spokesman said.
And chairman of the home affairs committee, Keith Vaz, has also
asked the commissioner to appear before the panel of MPs investigating phone
hacking next Tuesday.

Mr Wallis was arrested in a dawn raid at his west London home on suspicion of
intercepting mobile phones.

John Whittingdale MP On Murdoch Summons

He was questioned for several hours at Hammersmith police station before
being bailed until a date in November, Scotland Yard confirmed.
Mr Wallis joined the NOTW as deputy editor in 2003, and served under editor
Andy Coulson, who was arrested by detectives last week.
He became executive editor of the Sunday tabloid in 2007, the same year Mr
Coulson left.
The Met has confirmed that Mr Wallis' PR firm Chamy Media was employed in
2009 and last year to "provide strategic communication advice and support" while
the force's deputy director of public affairs was on sick leave.
The force said in a statement: "Three relevant companies were invited to
provide costings for this service on the basis of two days per month.

"Chamy Media were appointed as they were significantly cheaper than the
others. The contract ran from October 2009 until September 2010, when it was
terminated by mutual consent."
As part of the contract, Wallis advised the commissioner's office, the
directorate of public affairs and specialist operations.
Sir Paul has made the chair of the police authority aware of the contract,
which ceased before Operation Weeting started in January this year.
Before joining the NOTW, Mr Wallis was previously deputy editor at The Sun
and editor of The People. After leaving newspapers in 2009 he started working
for entertainment PR firm the Outside Organisation.

He is a former member of the Editors' Code of Practice Committee, whose
guidelines for journalists are enforced by self-regulatory body the Press
Complaints Commission (PCC), and of the PCC itself.
The PCC has lately been accused by MPs of being incapable of tackling serious
wrongdoing by journalists.
The arrest is part of Operation Weeting - the probe into mobile interceptions
made by News International journalists.
It is the ninth arrest Scotland Yard has made since the investigation was
launched

Looks like Piers Morgan and the Mirror could soon be dragged in too.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8635674/Hacking-scandal-Piers-Morgan-should-face-questions-say-MPs.html

Guido Fawkes blog linked in the article quotes from Morgan's book "he outlined how to hack voicemail" (no doubt Morgan will claim he was giving celebrities the heads up And the future for News International?? - Page 5 25346 ) and also it is claimed the Ulrika Johnson/Sven Ericsson affair was outed by hacking her voicemail under his stewardship as editor of the Mirror. Morgan of course is a former NotW editor and was at that time Brooks boss.

BREAKING: Rebekah Brooks resigns
Posted by Samira Shackle - 15 July 2011 09:59
"I have given Rupert and James Murdoch my resignation.... this time my resignation has been accepted"

Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch.
News International has confirmed that Rebekah Brooks, the company's chief executive, has resigned.

David Rose of the Times tweeted this statement from Brooks: "I have given Rupert and James Murdoch my resignation.... this time my resignation has been accepted".

It was reported last week that Brooks had offered her resignation to Rupert Murdoch but been refused. When he flew to London last week, he said that she was his "first priority".

Here's the statement Brooks emailed to staff:

As chief executive of the company, I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place.

I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate.

This is now detracting attention from all our honest endeavours to fix the problems of the past.

Therefore I have given Rupert and James Murdoch my resignation. While it has been a subject of discussion, this time my resignation has been accepted.

Rupert's wisdom, kindness and incisive advice has guided me throughout my career and James is an inspirational leader who has shown me great loyalty and friendship.
I would like to thank them both for their support.

Yes Carmen this has just been reported on the News. There is no way Rebekah did not know what was going on , at the meeting she attended with
Andy Coulson and a Police Officer is testament. Has this move been initiated by Rupert and James, or is she hoping it will take the heat off her....or
maybe she is going to be charged.!!!!

oh dear! Language, Elisabeth!

Brooks is so sad about "what we now know" -- ie, I didn't know -and had nothing to do with it.

How many of these media people and editors has she shagged I wonder? Why is no one having her back?

If they had been smart they'd have hired a media consultant to do the dirty work, then terminated that contract so they could say it was his own idea and not something they did routinely... er

Miss Murdoch, 42, is understood to be 'furious' that her father's media empire has been thrown into the spotlight over the last fortnight.
Had Brooks resigned last week, there is speculation that the News of the World could have been saved and media commentators suggested that the paper was sacrificed for her.
Miss Murdoch 'railed' against the former News of the World editor

---------------------

Well, whose fault is that? Murdoch stated that saving Rebekah was his top priority or words to that effect.

In a debate in the House of Lords today, Lord Prescott ridiculed Brooks's claim that her 'desire to remain on the bridge had made me a focal point of the debate.

'I was a seafarer of 10 years, I wouldn't have liked her on the bridge if she didn't know what was going on or where she was going and what direction, and that is why she has gone,' he said
He added: 'All these others are small bit players, it's Mr Murdoch (senior), he is the spy in the middle of this net and if we don't deal with him he will just come back to the same old practices.'

A close aide of Lord Prescott suggested that what he was trying to say was 'spider in the middle of this web'.

==============================

and what a tangled web it is.

Can Prescott really be buying her assertion that she "didn't know?"

Surely if Murdoch is the spider in the middle of the web then it was top down from HIM which means she DID know.

Rupert's apology:

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/07/serious-wrongdoing-news-world

The advert that will appear in newspapers tomorrow is below:

The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account.

It failed when it came to itself.

We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred.

We are deeply sorry for the hurt suffered by the individuals affected.

We regret not acting faster to sort things out.

I realise that simply apologising is not enough.

Our business was founded on the idea that a free and open press should be a positive force in society. We need to live up to this.

In the coming days, as we take further concrete steps to resolve these issues and make amends for the damage they have caused, you will hear more from us.

I wonder why he does not make amends and apologise to those who were hurt -all the EMPLOYEES of NOTW who were NOT engaged in setting nor actioning these disgraceful policies - his "sorting things out" was nothing more than knee jerk Cover Your Arse decision to close the paper to try to save News Int. and it did not work in saving Rebekah although there are now hundreds of people jobless.

I want to see them get to the bottom of the fake stories that started with a lying headline, lied all the way through and then finished up with a conclusion that merely pointed in the direction that the editors wanted.

It's not just the hacking it's the attempt to manipulate the news and influence people with lies. that's propaganda.

hearing Murdoch speak of free and open press makes me want to hurl.

Hope they are suitably impressed the great man has deigned to see them, after hiring someone to hack their child's email.

Now, money will change hands and Dowlers will say that they greet with positivity the new direction ... not that they are on the take, it's just how it works. Of course if he's really there to apologize and not shut them up maybe you can teach an old dog a new trick.

Meeting the Dowlers should have been his FIRST priority when he flew over here, instead of smarming over the Ginger Witch and taking her to dinner.
It's only now that the senile despot has realised what a huge pile of sh*t he's in that he condescends to engineer this meeting.
