I think Mudoch is trying to claw his way back by meeting the Dowlers.

If it was me I would refuse. How can you apologise for something you cannot redeem. It's all disgusting - if he had to apologise to all the people who have been affected he would never manage it - he wouldn't live that long. He's the lowest of the low.

Just saw "Horrible Bosses" last night - Jennifer Anniston, Kevin Spacey and I forget who the other one was, but seems like News Int could have its own movie along these lines never having to leave the house. You have the manic, totally unprincipled coke head who inherits a chemical company from his father whose funeral he does not even attend, the manipulative, lying aggressive @sshole CEO, and the wh*re -

Someone's got to draw a parallel at some point. Might as well be me.

Thank you widowan - when I get angry, the words just come tumbling out!
I despise those who only say sorry as an afterthought, or when some PR guy has to whisper in someone's ear that it would be in his best interests to apologise.
In NO way is this sincere, and I hope the victims don't fall for it - grrrr!

Btw - I LOVE Kevin Spacey. What a timely movie!

still chuckling over senile despot and ginger Witch - thank you for my first good laugh of the day. I love red heads BYW. Just not that one.

The best part of Horrible Bosses or the part that had me laughing the most was the bit after they roll the credits - outtakes? hilarious.

Maybe that will be the case here too...

The unemployed staff of NOTW should run, not walk, to file an improper termination suit against Murdoch and company.

I am sure the apologies owe much to the appointment a day or two ago of new PR consultants Edleman and the fact Murdoch has agreed to appear before the select committe next week. The apologies at least remove one line of criticism genuine or otherwise. My guess is Murdoch is only truly sorry that his troops have been caught out and his empire is under threat as a result.

Exactly.

Since he accepted Rebekah's resignation his own son or himself are now in the line of fire. Bring on the abject apologies, head in hands.

Maybe he can fake some kind of health issue as he totters into the select committee hearing, born up, the fallen lion, with the support of his sons on either side. After all he's done so much for British journalism.

He didn't get this far by being honest - however, due to his unprecedneted influence he hasn't had to cultivate much practice acting- so I have a feeling we'll see his claws if he is pressed into the corner, that or his lawyers answering for him (whilst assistants are frantically texting and tweeting from the gallery more BREAKING NEWS for the rest of his papers).

Les Hinton's resignation was clearly forced, his quote in the WSJ is basically one word "irrelevant" -(he had to resign because he was leading the group during the time those scandals were taking place, although he supposedly did not know of these practices - ha! -) he states that this is "irrelevant" -

He's hurt.

Dow Jones supposedly is going to feel some negative effects from this. well, good. people who based their entire livelihood obsessing over how much everything on earth does cost or should cost... what is that quote? A cynic is one who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing?

At least WSJ is reporting on this, but aside from one article that mentioned 9/11 victims they haven't brought that back up. People are still extremely touchy about that subject and how the victims are treated.

I HOPE they uncover some dirt on Fox News.

That would be a clever way to get a scoop, wouldn't it.

It's probably too much to hope someone hacked Clarence Mitchell's phone mail an d picked up a message from Metodo 3 saying "we got another sighting ready when you need one" or someone senior from News Int leaving a message that "ok, ok, Clarence, you win - we will let you write the McCann stories your way, but with a byline of one of our own reporters - as long as you give them to us first"

And there we have it --

He told me that Scotland Yard assumes Mulcaire was going into his phone - one to see if it could pinch any stories.

"And two for commercial advantage. Did he have any information about the purchase of serialisation rights, that sort of thing.

"In effect, what the News Of The World was up to was nothing sort of industrial espionage."

If NOW can do it so can NY Post and WSJ and Dow Jones. Especially Dow Jones with the same CEO that presided over News Int during the hacking.

I have already cancelled the WSJ and am writing them and NY Times a letter to the editor about why. I have to go online and get the Times, I would die without a news paper in the morning. I like getting news on line but I"ve been reading paper papers for 30 years and I feel naked without it, it'd be like starting the morning without a shower and a cup of coffee.

Brown Refers Sunday Times Row To Police

4:34am UK, Sunday July 17, 2011

Peter Spencer, political correspondent
Gordon Brown's row with The Sunday Times has taken a bitter turn after the
former prime minister referred the matter to police.

And the future for News International?? - Page 6 16029978

In a rare Commons appearance since he left office, Mr Brown lambasted the
paper in last week's debate on the phone-hacking scandal.
He claiming the Sunday Times, and other papers owned by News International,
had illegally obtained information about him and his family.
But his claim that unacceptable methods were used against him have prompted a
furious rebuttal from the title.
In a statement it insisted: "We used subterfuge, as permitted under the Press
Complaints Commission Code".
It was the paper's further assertion in an emailed letter that Mr Brown had
accused it of paying "known criminals" which led him to contact police.
Mr Brown's office says the Sunday Times had sought to "manufacture claims
which were never made and to distort those that were".

To date (Gordon Brown) has provided no evidence whatsoever for this slur. We
sent a letter to him today asking him to justify his
claims.
Sunday Times statement

The Sunday Times responded by saying: "Mr Brown made serious false
allegations last week that the Sunday Times paid 'known criminals' to work
against 'completely defenceless people'.
"To date he has provided no evidence whatsoever for this slur. We sent a
letter to him today asking him to justify his claims."
The investigation, conducted 11 years ago, was launched in the belief Mr
Brown had bought a flat at a knockdown price from a company once owned by Robert
Maxwell.
With both protagonists in the current dispute adamant that they are right and
the other side is wrong, this row is set to rumble on.
It is indicative of Rupert Murdoch's apparent willingness to say sorry for
wrongdoing, but to refuse to take the blame for charges of which he believes his
company is innocent.
It also starkly underlines the sense of pent-up emotion permeating politics
and the media at the moment, and the widespread and voracious hunger to settle
old scores.

Murdoch Vows: 'We'll Put Right Our Wrongs'

7:03am UK, Sunday July 17, 2011
News International has placed an advert in a number of Sunday newspapers
declaring there should be "no place to hide" from the police investigation into
phone hacking.

The advert, which is headed "Putting right what's gone wrong", states the
company will cooperate fully with the probe and pay "compensation for those
affected".
It adds the organisation is "committed to change".
In relation to the police inquiry, it says: "There are no excuses and should
be no place to hide.
"We will not tolerate wrongdoing and will act on any evidence that comes to
light."
The advert concludes: "Apologising for our mistakes and fixing them are only
the first steps.

And the future for News International?? - Page 6 16031832

The advert will also appear in some of Monday's papers

"It may take some time for us to rebuild trust and confidence, but we are
determined to live up to the expectations of our readers, colleagues and
partners.
"We will not stop until these matters are resolved."
The advert follows the one that appeared in Saturday's newspapers apologising
for mistakes made by the News of the World.
"We are sorry. The News of the World was in the business of holding others to
ccount. It failed when it came to itself," the advert read.

Mr Miliband believes Mr Murdoch has too much power and
influence in Britain

Labour leader Ed Miliband has meanwhile called for News International owner
Rupert Murdoch's UK media empire to be broken up.
Although he has closed the News of the World (NOTW), Mr Murdoch still owns
the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times, and 39% of BSkyB.
Mr Miliband told the Observer newspaper: ''I think that we've got to look at
the situation whereby one person can own more than 20% of the newspaper market,
the Sky platform and Sky News.
"I think it's unhealthy because that amount of power in one person's hands
has clearly led to abuses of power within his organisation."

Mr Hague: 'There was nothing wrong in asking Andy Coulson
to Chequers'

Earlier Foreign Secretary William Hague defended David Cameron,
saying he was "not embarrassed" by the extent of the Prime Minister's dealings
with News International.
It has emerged Mr Cameron met its top executives 26 times in the 15 months
after he took office.
Mr Hague also defended the PM's decision to entertain Andy Coulson after the
latter quit as Downing Street Director of Communications over the NOTW
phone-hacking scandal
He said it was a "normal, human thing" to invite Mr Coulson to Chequers to
thank him for his work, adding it showed a "positive side" to Mr Cameron's
character.
