They were playing in a marshy area where a stream runs onto the beach

Two young children, a brother and sister aged four and seven, drowned on a beach in Mazarrón on Thursday afternoon, in a muddy, marshy area of Playa Grande where a stream runs onto the beach.

It’s an area which is not used for bathing where there is no lifeguard service.

Born in Italy but with Bosnian parents, La Verdad reports that they were playing together while their parents were preparing lunch in the caravan where the family lives nearby, when the wind blew their ball into the spot where the stream pools onto the beach. Her body was recovered shortly before 2.30 pm, and it’s thought that she drowned after going into the water to collect her ball.

The water is more than one and a half metres deep in some points.

Her brother’s body was recovered three hours later.
