COMFORTABLE STAY: Norway's newest prison is more like a fancy resort than a home for hardened criminals. Halden Fengsel is considered the world's most humane prison. The $252 million prison, built over 10 years, has a sound studio, jogging trails winding through 75 acres of forest, and two-bedroom cottages for inmates to host their families. Inmates can take cooking classes. It's capacity is 252 inmates and houses murderers and rapists and drug dealers.. Are Hoidal, the prison's governor, says the facility operates on the guiding principal that treating prisoners humanely boosts their chances of success outside prison. "We want them to leave as better people," he says.
