People will always go out for entertainment, just as they go out for food.
You can't beat watching a new film on the big screen.

Staples are closing down in both Burton St and Raw Dykes Road, Leicester. I've not seen the report in the Mercury so I have no idea what is happening to the staff, but it's on the net.

Republic
Republic is expected to call in administrators on Wednesday putting 1,000 jobs at risk, according to Sky sources.
The youth fashion chain will become the latest casualty of the high street in the year to date, following the collapse of HMV, Jessops and Blockbuster.
Ernst & Young have been lined up as administrators, says Sky News City Editor Mark Kleinman.
Private Equity firm TPG owns Republic, which last month looked to switch to monthly rental payments in an attempt to avert cashflow problems.
The US-based buyout giant has injected new capital into the company on at least two occasions since it bought it two-and-a-half years ago - with around £20m pumped in over the course of 2012.
Tough trading conditions have hit the company in recent months, causing it to slow down its store-opening programme.
Republic, whose target market is young adults, sells brands including Diesel, Firetrap and G-Star.
Anusha Couttigane from retail analysts Conlumino said rumours of trouble at the retailer have been circling for some time.
"TPG cites crippling rental rates as the main cause for the company’s breakdown, recently hiring KMPG in a desperate bid to offload some of its 121 stores," she said.
"In light of this, news of its administration suggests that attempts to renegotiate monthly payments have failed, bringing the business to a complete standstill and landlords facing the prospect of more vacant units on the high street."
She also stressed that its target youth market had been hard hit by the recession, adding: "Republic has failed to keep up with some pretty fierce competitors."

164 more Blockbuster stores to shut
By Press Association, Feb 13, 2013
Leave a Comment..Another 164 stores at DVD and games rental firm Blockbuster are to shut, administrators for the chain have announced.
The latest planned closures, which threaten around 800 jobs, come on top of the 168 shops already identified for closure by Deloitte.
Blockbuster collapsed last month amid competition from internet firms and the digital streaming of movies and games.
Having started with 528 stores at the time of its appointment, Deloitte will continue to look for buyers for the stores not currently up for closure.
Joint administrator Lee Manning said: "We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the company for sale. We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course."
The latest 164 stores identified employ an average of five members of staff and will close over the coming weeks.
Deloitte said: "Staff in the stores affected by the closures will be facing redundancy. A dedicated employee helpline is in place and the company is running an employee assistance programme to help those staff facing redundancy find other jobs."
Customers will be notified in advance of the closure so that they can return their outstanding rental items beforehand. The standard rental terms and conditions remain in place.
Blockbuster struggled to adapt to the changing market and rivalry from internet retailers including Netflix, Amazon's LoveFilm and iTunes, which now offers a movie rental service.
The devastating impact of the internet on Britain's high street had already been laid bare with the demise of camera chain Jessops and electricals group Comet, which also cited competition from online players as a major reason for their downfall.

I feel very sad about all this.
I remember I used to work in woolworths on a Saturday when I was 15....... I remember the fishmonger and the butcher ...what we got now...big supermarkets, greedy, and off course horse meat instead off beef ...
This would never off happened if we didn't have supermarkets, cheap horrible meat sitting in the sun for Hours on end on it's way from god knows where...disgusting.

Morrisons buys 49 Blockbuster stores

Morrisons is to buy 49 stores from
the failed Blockbuster film rental chain, the supermarket has announced.
The Bradford-based retailer will use the purchase to build a new convenience
store franchise, especially in London and the South East.
The converted "Morrisons M" local shops should open by late summer, creating
1,000 jobs, Morrisons said.
The stores are among 164 that Blockbuster's administrators, Deloitte, said
this week were to be shuttered.
Blockbuster went into administration last week, as its entire business model
of High Street-based DVD and video rentals has been superseded by online
streaming services provided by the likes of Apple iTunes, Amazon's Love Film and
Netflix.
The 164 store closures and 800 job losses announced by Deloitte this week
came on top of 168 closures and 760 redundancies previously announced.
Although Morrisons has not made any formal commitment to retain Blockbusters
staff, the firm said it "would be delighted if they wanted to apply for jobs at
the new stores".
Convenient deal
The 49 stores being purchased for an undisclosed payment are of strategic
value to Morrisons which has lagged other supermarkets in creating a
convenience-store format, as well as a home delivery service.
It also wants to increase its presence in the lucrative South East of
England.
Nationally, Morrisons has about 11% market share among supermarkets, but in
the South it is just 6%.
The firm has previously declared its intention to open 70 convenience stores
by the end of this year, primarily in the Greater London area.
To this end, it has already bought up seven stores from the failed camera
retailer Jessops, and announced the rebranding of the 12 "M Local" stores that
it already owns.
Furthermore, Morrisons has acquired a 100,000 sq ft (9,300 sq m) distribution
centre in Feltham, west London.
The firm is expected to announce the inauguration of an online delivery
service when it unveils its full-year results on 14 March.
"We are rolling out the Morrisons M local estate at pace this year, and these
acquisitions give us a kick-start in securing a solid foothold in this key
sector," said Gordon Mowat, head of Morrisons Convenience.
"The convenience market is growing, as more people shop locally and we want
to be in a position to take advantage of this."
Deloitte said that the deal was expected to be the first of a number of group
and individual sales that it would announce, as it worked through the inventory
of Blockbuster stores recently earmarked for closure.

Axminster have called in the Administrators and HMV have closed down several more Stores.
I think on=line shopping is mostly responsible for all these closures, yes the economy is bad , but 194,000 jobs increase last month encouraging. We reap what we sow as they say and when Lerners Lee invented this extraordinary facility "the internet" little did we know what would happen further down the line.

I think out of town retail parks also have a huge effect on retail sales in town centres. I hardly ever shop in town now that there's a retail park close by where parking is free. There used to be free on street parking in town here, but it's now all metered and I'm not going to pay for parking to walk around town when there are so many shops close together in the retail park.
Re: more store closures and job cuts ahead in uk?
Yes Anna, we have the same in our small town centre. The council scrapped free parking on a Sunday and it killed off the trade. After residents and local traders protested, it changed it back to free.

Given the choice; do I stop off at Tesco in town, where I have to pay for parking, just to dash in and get one item, or stop off at the big Tesco on the way home, where parking is free? Easy decision.
Re: more store closures and job cuts ahead in uk?
Oh I do understand,. We have to pay for residents parking permits to park in our own street which irritates me. It's just a cash cow for the council. They recently tried to widen the residents parking zone across the borough but once again have had to back down.

Thomas Cook to cut 2,500 jobs in UK
Travel group Thomas Cook has announced it will cut 2,500 jobs in the UK and close some stores as it attempts to revive its profitability.
Most of the job losses will come from its "back-office functions and its retail network", it said.
"Even after these changes we will still have one of the largest retail networks in UK travel," Thomas Cook said.
For the last financial year to September, the firm reported pre-tax losses of £485.3m.
It has blamed a "difficult trading environment" and higher fuel costs.
