About 18 months ago, IBM cut something like 15% of its workforce.
Re: more store closures and job cuts ahead in uk?
12 years dartford have been preparing for the new tescos, they purchased all the houses In the surrounding area and have been boarded up for the past 10 years promised jobs and now.....there not building a huge store there, the houses will remain boarded up and look like a dump.
Tesco bought up the land in bexleyheath which was council owned and now.....it's just a HUGE hole in the ground, all boarded up as they have decided NOT to build their new superstore there.

It is disgusting Kitti, big business does what the hell it likes and the supermarkets are the worst. They have over charged us for years. Held farmers to ransom. Now just because we shop elsewhere and get really good bargains they are finding it not economic to build more supermarkets. If Aldi, Lidl, BM, Home Bargains and the like had not opened selling things at half the price. The likes of Tesco and all the rest of them would have been opening supermarkets on every plot until kingdom come. Thank God for those companies that have saved us.

I read that IBM denied the latest reports, but they did make 15% redundancies around 18 months/2 years ago.

Losing 1,700 jobs in Steelmaking at Redcar on top of the round of cuts will finish steelmaking in the North East. There is virtually no heavy industry left. Last time I went to Middlesbrough, I wondered then at the number of" high end" restaurants etc. I wondered then who was keeping them going. Now I suspect some of them at least may go.
These are the conditions in which we are bringing ever more Migrants into. I ask again, as I did a few days ago, where will the jobs come from? What happens when those in work can no longer afford the taxation burden to pay out benefits/education/Health care/accommodation for those who are not.

"Tata Steel has announced nearly 1,200 job losses at its plants in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire.
Nine hundred jobs will be lost at the firm's plant in Scunthorpe. The remaining 270 jobs will go in Scotland."

It is beginning to look like the situation we had a few short years ago, when job losses vastly outweighed any jobs created. A closer look shows very little similarity, in that we have had a step increase in population since then, with the consequent pressures on our NHS, Education, and infrastructure in general
More people collecting more and variant benefits, with fewer people in work to pay for it, many of them on part time. Still more are pouring in. Coming, and ending up on Part time work with the consequent lowering of standards, and ability to pay tax. and now they have found their way to Cyprus. - Fast track to Britain perhaps. I have been pilloried before for supposedly silly outlandish statements, many of which have come to pass. I wonder if the extension of immigrants into Cyprus is in fact all part of a master plan too overrun Europe without a fight

In the past couple of years, two new stores have opened up round the corner from my house, an Aldi and a Morrison's. Whereas, the Aldi is busy most of the time, the Morrison's store is almost empty, whatever time of day I go there. The local Tesco also appears to be suffering from the fact that there is also a Lidl store too.

BHS AND AUSTIN REED SEEM TO BE IN TROUBLE,MIGHT GO INTO ADMINISTRATION.
FOOTFALL IN TOWN CENTRES SEEM TO HAVE FALLEN 10%,SOME THINK ITS LINKED TO EITHER EU REFERENDUM OR APRIL BENEFIT CHANGES.
PLACES LIKE NEWCASTLE ON TYNE ARE BEING PARTICULARLY HIT WITH 30% SHOP VACANCY.
MORE PEOPLE EATING OUT MEANS LESS SPEND IN FOOD SHOPS.
MORE SPEND ONLINE THAN IN SHOPPING CENTRES.
SHOPPING CENTRES WILL HAVE TO REINVENT THEMSELVES.
