The McCanns have had more spokespeople with some sort of political persuasion than you can shake a stick at. This has helped them to get across the messages they want to launch. They have from the beginning acted the martyr to bad luck and fate to mask any responsibilty for whatever happened. This has played well with media most of the time because in an atavistic way we have a natural affinity to an underdog, especially if foreigners can be blamed and of course there is a good old zeitgeist requirement for finding paedophiles lurking everywhere - but not possibly amongst the people close to Madeleine or her parents it seems.

Leveson, Meyer etc are not stupid people but talk about the Madeleine "abduction" as though it is an unassailable fact - over-riding police worries and conclusions as if they they are irrelevant nonsenses. Everyone seems to have, on the face of it, lost their critical faculties - why is anyone's guess. Any attempt to try to defend the papers against the McCann credo produces hectoring and/or belittling responses by Leveson and Jay. If I hadn't heard it I would not have believed it possible in a Western democracy - it's more like Show Trial Lite behaviour.

"absolute destruction of freedom of speech" - does seem to be what McCanns and Carter-Ruck etc all want. Not just them either sadly. Great (but worrying) video at the end too.

Sadly I agree too. Leveson is a Judge carrying out an internationally covered major inquiry into our UK press system and he seems to sadly have gone astray on the McCann case - and seemingly on that case alone. Why?
