But he refused to say what evidence they had uncovered to suggest Madeleine was alive.

“Evidence that she is alive stems from the forensic view of the timeline,” he said.

What do you think he meant by the last sentence?

I have never understood either just why Portugal sits back and says nothing about the constant criticism and slandering of it's country and it's police force. How many cases in the UK have been badly mishandled by police? The answer is many, yet where is the constant criticism of them?

Why haven't the Mccanns very expensive private investigators found and followed up all these so called new leads? How come Edgar and a SWAT team didn't descend on the remote village in Portugal where he was sure Madeleine was being held? Why doesn't the UK government give a damn about the thousands of other missing children?

Is this case solveable? Yes of course, but only when the people actually involved begin to tell the truth, and that is not likely to happen. Whitewash, yes indeed, lots and lots of it and no doubt people kept in full time employment constantly mixing it up.

its not looking good if what Snr Amaral says is true, and i have no reason to doubt him, that SY want to reopen the case starting at the point where there was an abduction. No wonder the Portuguese won't reopen the case. And so we start again, with the Kate And Gerry show!! OMG! I can't stand to see them anymore, I really can't!

Panda, to me it looks like SY have checked out the Tapas timeline and think it gives a long enough opportunity for an abduction to take place?

The reason why the mccanns carry on......it's there, you can see for yourself why they carry on....1m from news international ....the hope off 1m from mr amaral....the adulation from believers ......the prime minister licking there arses.....how many people have the power to tell a prime minister to get off his behind and DEMAND a review ....ok it was through Murdoch but he is one off the richest people alive and the mccanns have him as A 'friend'...why..how and last but not least....reputation.....they want that back, but they ruined that themselves by saying they neglected there children...they can't unsay they didn't do it.

The Portugese have said that Scotland Yard has not asked for the case to be re-opened and it will not be unlless there is firm evidence of a new lead.

I think Andy Redwood was very undiplomatic to mention these 195 so called enquiries , what did Scotland Yard do, file them in date order and decide
to inveatigate later on when they had studied all 40,000 pages? If you have a potential lead, you investigate immediately, there were certainly enough
Officers to do so. I understood the five clerical staff were those who went through the files so that the Officers receive any papers considered worthy
of follow up.

I think Portugal have shown remarkable restraint but might be writing to Redwood castigating him and warning they will withdraw their co-operation
if he makes public his opinion again will put him in his place.

oh FGS did we expect any different, do we really think that the review would take place with currently £2 m of taxpayers money for DI andy redwood to say they were getting nowhere. they want more money, and he wants out, he wants the PJ to take it on. You do have to ask yourself why, if the PJ take it on and re-open what will the 37 detectives at the met do. they want rid of it, its a huge can of worms.

Its the anniversary next week, thats why it was brought forward its all a put up job, the Portuguese havent been asked and as they say there is nothing new to re-open. it was done this way to get more political push on it on the anniversary of the parents going on the lash and allegedly leaving 3 children without adult supervision in a foreign country with doors that were locked or unlocked. jimo im disgusted at all the jockeying and manipulation.

The investigation cost the Portuguese police a great deal in financial terms and also in reputation. It also caused Gonçalo Amaral to give up a job he loved and in which he had a previously exemplary record. Why should they put more effort into chasing shadows when they put so much into it. When the Tapas Crew decided that they would not go back and help the police by participating in a reconstruction, I think the PJ just threw up their hands and said "enough," and I don't blame them.

There was us thinking that SY would suss out Medoto 3, and it looks like SY have in fact taken their `leads` as genuine (although IIRC Metodo only said there were 8). Where have all the others come from - Edgar maybe and Halligen and are they listening to Kennedy?

What is certain is that they are falling for every word the McCanns say to them - now what sort of police force is that? Either flippin` wallies or they`re being ordered what to do to protect some very sinister goings-on.

There must be underlings in that force who can see what a stitch-up it is and I`m sure, at some point, someone will spill the beans.

A child is missing. There is 195 leads to follow. All probably ending in zilch. Along with the 600 more. When is somebody going to sort out this total mess. And go back to basics. And that is the third of May and the witnesses. Instead of all this ridiculous paper shuffling. Good for the Portuguese to refuse to open the case as there is no new worthwile evidence that would lead to a solution. If it costs £3 million to decide that Madeleine is either alive or sadly dead. Then how much would it cost to actually solve the case. Billions and billions and billions.

I don't believe Redwood wants out, he's strictly following instructions from above down to the last detail. The aim is to promote the abduction theory, destroy the credibility of Amaral and the PJ, and the dogs, and give the McCanns pathetic abduction story a big thumbs up. This he is doing in spades.... and will probably get a nice raise and promotion for his efforts.

Good grief, you can see it in his eyes... he's got that same blank, lack of integrity expression as Clarence Mitchell, Dave Edgar, Arthur Cowley and Jim Gamble.

I agree with you pennylane, NSY are doing exactly as they've been told to do by the powers that be. As I've said before, no matter what evidence they find pointing to any Mccann guilt it will very conveniently vanish. For whatever reason nothing and nobody is going to touch the Mccanns. Scapegoats can be found, lies can be told, truth can be covered up, the Mccanns will never have to worry about money in their lives, they are after all, the most important people in Great Britain, untouchables. The big question is why, but we will never get any answers to that I'm afraid.

That was my point wjk. If I were a copper, and I got a lead as to where a missing kid was, I'd be jumping right on it and doing something. I wouldn't wait for 10 months and then make a TV programme about it. And I certainly wouldn't be asking somebody else to do something with it, thereby delaying things even further. And the McCanns are said to be "delighted"? I'd be raging. None of this makes sense.

All this rather depends upon whether we are being told the whole truth, rather than just a snapshot of some aspects.

I think it best to remember, as many have mentioned, that SY are not stupid, neither are the PJ and we must have a degree of faith in what we are not being told, too.

Absolutely spot on! I am sure much was cauterised before this so called 'review' was requested.

If I had possession of information that would expose this shower, I think it would be a cold day in hell before I would go to the police, or the press.

It didn't make sense to me right at the beginning when the McCanns said there were credible sightings in Morocco, yet they did their grand European tour first. When they reached Morocco, as their last stop, did they visit the areas where those 'credible sightings,' took place, showing photographs, asking people if they had seen their child? No. They had meetings with dignitaries and they went back to Praia da Luz.

I agree pennylane, the problem Redwood has is that working with SY and other high ranking Police officers has one big down side and that is its fairly popular to drop those high ranking Officers in the brown stuff, so if Redwood was my OH I would be telling him to cover his backfrom all sides, and not to take tharaise and promotion for his effortst (or if he has been promised)

Having watched events unfold over the last few days, it appears to me that the current situation benefits three parties - the McCanns, Scotland Yard and the newspapers.

Some very dodgy stuff has made its way into the light during the Leveson enquiry - police being in cahoots with reporters and money changing hands for information. Then Rupert Murdoch appears and drops Cameron in the cart.

Cue sudden bringing forward of the Panorama programme, which largely gave the 'official' version (wouldn't imagine they'd get permission to screen it, otherwise). Redwood and Alan Johnson attempting a nasty 'hospital pass' to the Portuguese, and the media, especially The Sun and its breathless, fervid reporting, joining in to give 'Johnny Foreigner' a good metaphorical kicking. In fact, the only thing that might have pleased The Sun more was if the 'abduction' had taken place in Argentina - it would have it all -swarthy, untrustworthy foreigners who steal children and want to steal our territory too! Ooh, imagine the collective orgasm in the meeting room if they had to 'report' that.

Meanwhile, three groups (mcCanns, newspapers and police) get a little respite from all those nasty allegations flying round, while the public chunter over this. In my opinion.

I don't agree with some of the comments, why would Cameron agree to a Review costing so much money, to the annoyance of some in his Party
if it was to be a cover up????? Surely now, there are enough sceptics in Parliament who doubt the McCanns story and would accuse Cameron of wasting
Taxpayers money. He is not exactly flavour of the Month , Murdoch has dumped him, he has many MP's in his own Party who would never forgive him if £3.5 million has been spent at a time when the Country is destitute and there is nothing to show for it.

Yeah, I've tried to stay away from posting, it's a bit like scratching itchy skin, or eating Pringles - once you start doing it, you can't stop

But, like I said, I have been galvanised into action again by all this week's taradiddle. So there goes my calm, relaxed state of mind for a burton. Still, it cheered me up no end seeing Clarence's new Justin Bieber hairstyle the other morning - nearly coked on my toast.

But seriously, Cameron was apparently pressurised by News International to give the review the green light. Now when Murdoch is called to give evidence to Leveson, he mentions that, that he and Cameron had meetings at which BskyB bid was mentioned. And that they pressurised Cameron to support the review. It might just be that Cameron thought that spending £3 million of other people's money was a bargain in exchange for favourable press from NI. But the fact that a media group is telling a Prime Minister to do such things (for whatever reason) is rather alarming.

However, by bringing forward Panorama (I'd have thought it would have made more sense to show it in its original planned slot, just days prior to the anniversary) and getting Redwood to sing from the approved songsheet, attention is diverted from this and people can be worked into a righteous frenzy about the perceived lack of Portuguese police effectiveness and co operation. Thereby benefiting NI, the Met, Cameron and last, but assuredly not least, the McCanns.

It's basically the same principle as someone stamping on your foot to distract you, so their accomplice can nick your wallet. And blame it on a man on the other side of the road.
