Kate-and-Gerry-McCann-have-hit-out-at-the-Government-s-proposals- and intresting choice of words maddie was LEFT
Kate-and-Gerry-McCann-have-hit-out-at-the-Government-s-proposals-following-the-Leveson-Inquiry Kate and Gerry McCann have hit out at the Government's proposals following the Leveson Inquiry
Gerry and Kate McCann hit out at the Government's proposals, saying they lacked transparency and gave newspapers a last chance at self-regulation they did not deserve.
The main political parties appeared last week to be nearing agreement on plans for a Royal Charter that would oversee a new press watchdog.
Labour and the Liberal Democrats gave a cautious welcome to Tory proposals for creating a body to verify a new regulator set up by the industry.
Mr McCann told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "I think Leveson has been quite generous to the press and more than the behaviour of some sections of the media deserve really.
"They are getting a last chance at self-regulation which for me was actually a step too far."
He added: "I feel that the press has lost its entitlement to self-regulation over many, many years and I would have liked to have seen statutory regulation, not self-regulation."
Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007, where she had been left by her parents as they dined at a tapas restaurant with friends nearby.
The coverage of her disappearance was given by Lord Justice Leveson as an example of how stories ran "totally out of control".
Giving evidence to the inquiry last year, Kate McCann said she felt like "climbing into a hole and not coming out" after the News of the World printed her intensely personal diary, started after her daughter disappeared. They also criticised other papers' coverage of her disappearance.

Why did gerry complain about news of sightings being published? The **** successfully managed to keep news of important developments in two ongoing libel cases, including the fact that they've racked up £288000 in lawyer's fees against an unrepresented OAP, out of the papers. To expect us to believe that they couldn't keep sightings out of the press if they were in any way unhelpful is absurd.
I think the press have been quite generous to this infamous duo and certainly more than the neglectful parents deserve really.

Now then Gerry, why don`t you be a bit more thruthful and tell us the REAL reason you want more press control. Quite despicable that you now bite the hand that`s fed you your millions.

Splendid - yet another way of avoiding the speculative word "Abduction".
So, in addition to
"Missing"
"Disappeared"
"Vanished"
as mentioned in the other Thread, we now have "Left".

I wonder how the few remaining Pro-Child Neglect supporters are spinning this change of approach by the Media?

Well, 'left,' is an advance for the Express. It's also rather less kind to the McCanns than the Express has been of late. The children weren't asleep but 'left.' A little step by the journo but hopefully the start of more like this. Gerry McCann has really bitten the hand that has fed him and the missus for nearly 6 years.

What I do remember him saying (I can find the ref if you want, I think it's in the Vanity Fair interview) that it could have been worse. 'They' could have taken all three children.
Well done there then!

"Abandoned" would be a better choice of words, IMO, but "left" is certainly a step in the right direction, as it show that the McCanns made a conscious decision to leave the children on their own and if Madeleine had been abducted, they are at least partially responsible.

I was reminded in another recent Topic that the Abandonment has itself often been debated as a possible part of the Fairy Tale.

Indeed - she had to have been left alone for the "abductor" to climb through the window, walk in through an unlocked door or whatever took his fancy.
The other three sets of "wonderful caring" parents must be eternally grateful that it wasn't one of their children who was taken - with so many pretty young girls in the group, it could have been any of them........

McCanns: Plans to regulate press do not go far enough
Monday, February 18, 2013 Leicester MercuryFollow
By Peter Warzynski
The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have said the Government proposal to regulate the media does not go far enough.
Kate and Gerry McCann, of Rothley, said plans to marshal the press through a Royal Charter, as opposed to a law, was "a compromise of a compromise".
Gerry and Kate McCann
Royal Charters are used to establish and lay out the terms of organisations, such as the BBC and the Bank of England, and cannot be changed without Government approval.
Speaking on the Andrew Marr show yesterday, the couple said the Conservatives had missed the point of the Leveson inquiry.
Gerry McCann said that the Royal Charter – which ministers insisted would be tough and effective – would still leave the media with too much control.
He said: "They are getting a last chance at self-regulation which, for me, was actually a step too far. I feel the press has lost its entitlement to self-regulation over many, many years and I would have liked to have seen statutory regulation, not self-regulation."
Kate said: "I believe that if the Royal Charter goes through we'll be no better off. What the Government is proposing is not what Leveson proposed."
The McCanns appeared before Lord Justice Leveson in November 2011 to give evidence as part of his inquiry into press standards.
They told how journalists who camped outside their home scared their children and left the family feeling hemmed in.
Gerry explained the biggest distress to them was the incorrect message was going out that their daughter was dead, hindering a meaningful search.
Lord Justice Leveson's report recommended an independent, self-regulatory watchdog for the press that would be backed by legislation.
But the Conservatives opposed regulation backed up by statute and have said a Royal Charter is the best way to provide legal backing for a new press regulator.
Speaking yesterday, Kate said the couple were still battling with newspapers over stories printed about the disappearance of their daughter in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
"I wrote to the editor of the newspaper concerned and I got a reply back which made my blood boil," she said. "It was basically telling me they knew what was best for Madeleine and for missing children."
Gerry said: "My concerns are about accuracy and standards of the press."
