McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book

The parents of Madeleine McCann have prevented their young twins from looking at the internet in an attempt to shield them from “terrifying” conclusions made in a book by the disgraced former detective who led the initial investigation into their sibling’s disappearance.

By Fiona Govan, Lisbon
6:00AM BST 14 Sep 2013
A child psychologist hired by the McCanns to help Sean and Amelie, now eight, cope in the aftermath of their older sister’s abduction told a Lisbon court how damaging the claims by former policeman Goncalo Amaral could be.
David Tricky, 46, a specialist in dealing with children who have suffered trauma, told the libel hearing that Madeleine’s siblings could be in danger of developing mental problems if they were to discover the claims made in the book The Truth of the Lie. “I think that would be terrifying for the children to hear. To believe that the parents were not only unable to keep them safe but then to be told they were in some way involved in the death of their sister and covered it up, would have a serious impact,” said Mr Tricky who first met Sean and Amelie a few weeks after Madeleine disappeared in May 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday.
He said Kate and Gerry McCann, both 45, from Rothley, Leics feared that as the twins grew older and were more easily able to gain access to the internet they were likely to come across the theories put forward by Mr Amaral.
The McCanns are suing Mr Amaral and the publishers of his 2008 book, and the makers of a subsequent documentary for £1 million in damages. The civil case will continue on Thursday.

Fiona Govan is a reporter for the Telegraph in Spain ....this is a disgraceful arrticcle and I feel so strongly about it I want to send an e-mail to the Editor, can someone give me the e-mail address? Thanks.

Like I said on the other thread, is he also going to shield them from Kate's own book, and particularly page 129?

Panda, I can't find a direct e-mail for Fiona Govan - an absolute disgrace, I agree - but here's a general contact.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/about-us/form/
To think of any child - let alone the twins - having access to the worst that Kate's warped mind can produce is very worrying.
Obscene language (directed at people doing their job), details of her sex life, inappropriate comments about her daughter in the phraseology that certain "child-loving" adults use - oh yes, excellent bedtime reading for the twins!

Fiona Govan is based in Madrid but there doesn't seem to be any direct contact for her other than twitter. I agree it is a disgraceful article, certainly not an unbiased journalistic report. I can understand Kate McCann being terrified of the twins being let loose on the internet, they would soon find out that their parents have never been honest with them and as they get older will no doubt start demanding some honest answers. Of course there is always the possibility that by then the McCanns will have managed to get the internet closed down completely, they appear to get their own way with everything else, they have got away with lying, with story changes, damaging peoples lives, escaping neglect charges and have managed to turn themselves into the most saintly parents on the planet whilst making themselves rich at the same time. All this and more by losing a small child through their neglect and selfishness. Very odd indeed isn't it?

Fiona is so one-sided she is almost toppling over. Like my mate Lazzeri and a couple of others mara_thon:haha: As Journalists they should be able to write an article reporting the truth , Leveson wasted his time and all that money obviously. I don't want to write to fiona I want to write to the Editor.mara thon wrote:Fiona Govan is based in Madrid but there doesn't seem to be any direct contact for her other than twitter. When I saw the title of this topic my first thought was ' well, she shouldn't have written it then....' I certainly found it horrifying.

Hi tigger, I intend to send an email to the Editor of the Spanish Telegraph with a copy of the Amaral Video taken from youtube. I have watched the video and find nothing "terrifying" .If you or any Member for that matter, want to try to find an e-mail address for the Spanish Telegragh, feel free, the UK Telegraph has a helpline for info but might ask me why I want the Spanish Address.tigger wrote:When I saw the title of this topic my first thought was ' well, she shouldn't have written it then....' Re: McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book
Errrr, I'm a bit confused as to what is horrific about this article?
Fiona Govan has given no personal comment. Even in the preamble she has the word "terrifying" in inverted commas. It is a quote, as is some of the body of the text, from David Trickey. This is what he testified. She has picked on one aspect, his testimony, and 'reported' it.
No different from what most of the mainstream does! And it's brief, unless this is an extract and there's loads more I've missed.
David Trickey said it, not her.
PS The only bad bit is the use of the word abduction as far as I can see.

Yes I agree - sorry, I saw the words "disgraced former detective" at the top and naturally thought the worst of the rest of the article!
Call off the dogs, Panda!
As for the wonderfully named Mr Trickey, he really needs to read Kate's book and analyse the effects on the twins of having a very disturbed mother.

I would hazard a guess thaat when this trial is over, the Video will disappear, Amaral has stated his case based on his knowledge . If the McCanns win , all reference to Madeleine will be banned from you tube , if Amaral wins the McCanns will probably emigrate . From day 1 it was the Mccanns with rheir daily briefings, PR advisor etc which kept Madeleine on the front page. Now, 6 years down the line and numerous sightings around the World , not a trace of Madeleine has been found

Re: McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book
What will be, will be. We have been talking for years about the twins eventually finding stuff on the internet. I hope this is sorted out well before then and her parents are brought to justice. It feels like a chess game at the moment, with many more moves to come. Forca Amaral.
But to get back to the point, the article quoted is mostly correct, if limited to one particular defence witness. If you don't agree with his words that's a different matter. Govan has merely reported it.
So what will you say to the Editor?

I will ask her whether she checked out Amaral's video on the Internet and give her the Reference number. There is nothing offensive about it , based more on fact that anything the Mccanns have said. Have you ever wondered why a Fund was set up 12 days after Madeleine disappeared.? Why the only item Gerry brought back from Rothley was a pillowcase which could have been taken from Sean or Amelies' bed for all we know. This Man is a Doctor and would know more than most the importance of DNA...why not bring Madeleine's books or toys. ? All her clothes were apparently washed in the Ocean Club W/M two days after her disappearance. I think the McCanns keeping news of Madeleine in the Press is doing more damage to the twins than Amaral's video . They were only two when she disappeared so their memory of her now would be quite faint.

Panda: I really don't think you need to contact the paper, not to complain about Fiona Govan anyway. She was only quoting the words of David Trickey, another of the McCanns' so-called experts.

Re: McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book
Fair enough if you're spreading awareness! I don't think Govan will be held 'bang to rights' though!
I agree with most of your points, just not relating to that particular report.
Don't forget we'll be listening to all the witnesses for the Prosecution first, so the only interesting stuff will come from the Defence's refutations (when we get to hear them in transcripts after the fact) and then when the Defence presents its witnesses. It will be interesting.

No I probably won't contact her except about the screaming headline and the reference to the children, being able to go to the internet and find all the "damaging " videos. Their Parents have been in the limelight for 6 years , all their own doing , don't you think they might have thought about the effect on their children and the gossip in school???Not Born Yesterday wrote:Panda: I really don't think you need to contact the paper, not to complain about Fiona Govan anyway. Re: McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book
I don't understand how they can possibly keep the twins away from the Internet. My son is one year older than them and has been using the Internet , both at school, and at home for school work. Quite rightly, schools realise that it is an integral part of life now, and they encourage them to use it at every turn.

Re: McCanns shield twins from "terrifying" Book
Parents should always be honest with their children.
Well, its what I have always been told and my husband and I have always been honest with our kids.
Therefore, following this advice, if we were in the McCann's shoes, we would have handled the situation far differently.
We would have told our children that their sister had disappeared, it was a mystery to us what had happened to her. We would have told our children that the police were trying to blame us for the disappearance because we left them all in bed while we went for tea with our friends and we did a wrong thing. We would have told our children that their sister may not be with us at Christmas but we hope she will be but not to expect it. We would have told our children that they may hear a lot of bad things about their mummy and daddy and we cannot stop other people saying bad things about us. We would tell our children we love them and they are safe with us because we have learned from our bad mistake.
It may seem like damage limitation, but to be as honest as possible in a gentle way with your children is the best policy to my mind, because the twins are going to hear and read things in the future and they think a wicked man with spots and goofy teeth has taken their sister and that their mummy and daddy are never wrong about anything and if they say Madeleine is coming home to open her Christmas presents then she must be and its going to come as such a shock to them when their protective bubble bursts.
How would others explain it to their children?

The Mccanns are not being honest with their children when they say, "it's a mystery to us what happened to her".
I agree honesty is the best policy and, just for starters, if I was in the McCanns' shoes I would never have left the three children alone. I can't imagine how they will handle that one when they are asked "why". Maybe, "well it was our holiday too".

Of course it should, kitti! And according to Mrs Fenn, the child crying in the McCanns apartment was really worked up and in a state! How 'terrifying' was it for the McCanns three abandoned toddlers, left alone nightly in a foreign place?kitti wrote:Shouldn't it be...Mccanns shield twins from terrifying truth ....

From day 1 the McCanns have never accepted any liability for Madeleine's disappearance and I think back to the picture of Gerry with his "Wider Agenda"
which started when the Tapas group got together before even the Police arrived to write down their timelines for checking on their children. Had they been distraught and felt they HAD to physically search for their beloved daughter , I'm sure OC Staff or any of the Group would have volunteered to look after the twins. How could Kate , in reply to this question from Jane Hill of the BBC say "well, we were busy"!!!
