I havn't even got the any heating on ....yet. I don't know if you or anybody remember the Winter of the late sixties, I was living in a Flat in London at the time. It seemed to last forever , deep snow, freezing cold and frozen water pipes. I was working for Monsanto Chemicals in Victoria Street and they were amazing. Every day they handed out plastic containers of water and if you couldn't carry them , they would pay for a taxi or get someone who lived in your area to take you home. They had a very hands on approach to Staff and if you had a Client problem and your immediate Boss was away, you could go and speak to a Director . Proper Restaurant with Waitress Service and subsidised meals.....where would you find all that today???

Yes NBY, I read that very sad, the homes demolished by falling trees or flooded out is also very sad , bet there will be bleak Christmas festivities in a lot of homes.

I didn't know the Met had been so specific kitti, it is a lot colder today , but many areas were not affected by the Storm , thankfully, so maybe it won't be so fierce if it does return.

I am truly sick of this weather now.It has been raining since the end of last August ! I think we have seen the sun about 3 times for no more than a few minutes.

Why is Cameron poking his nose into Scotland's business and making a big speech about what it will do to the UK if they separate .....good luck to them, at least they get a vote .

The idiot should be in Somerset carrying sandbags and helping people save their homes and he should be setting aside money to help these people instead off sending millions to India to help them with their space programme.....

I dont want another hurricane thanks.

I do feel really sorry for the people in Somerset and i agree with kitti that Charity should begin at home and not in India or elsewhere. Not saying we shouldn't help with disaster efforts abroad and humanitarian efforts.

I have mixed feelings about the Somerset flats though. They say if the rivers were dredged then it wouldn't flood but this rain has been exceptional .Sometimes you just cant hold back nature.
What about those people who see their houses drop off the cliffs into the sea due to coastal erosion, they don't get help.

What if that big tree in my garden drops on my house tonight, will Cameron come and help me cut it up ?

In the old days the farmers on the Somerset flats had to dig out their ditches by hand and pay to dredge the rivers themselves.
They are now blaming the soppy Liberal ecologists who they say prevented them doing this because they wanted to protect the wildlife on the banks.
I dont know how true that is,if it is true then maybe they have a gripe.

Personally i have never gone crying to anyone and if i dont want my house to flood i will build it on top of a
hill !Which is exactly what i did.

Thats a simplistic view i know, doesnt stop me feeling sorry for people when you see the devastation they have to deal with.

I believe the blame for many of the problems must lie with the developers and those councils who allow these developments to go ahead on flood plains. Admittedly people must have somewhere to live, but they are tearing down great swathes of our inner city areas and turning them into carparks instead of building affordable living accomodation.

Thats exactly right ms.

The farmers on those Somerset flats have probably done very well for themselves in the good times. The workers in the council houses who have to live and work somewhere have probably got to watch their carpets going rotten.
One fairly well off looking bloke in a 4x4 leaving the village was asked what he thought and he shrugged his shoulders and said "the insurance will pay "
So in that respect we ( those of us who pay to insure our homes) will be baling them out (scuse the pun).i dont mind that i suppose that will put my premiums up next year, fair enough.

We should not be building on flood plains any more.We got plenty of derelict land and old industrial estates that thatcher turned into waste land.

I think Centre Point is still empty and so is the Shard.

Loads of Highland up in Scotland if Braveheart will let us in !
