He was named last night as immigrant Euclides Monteiro. But his family denied that he abducted Madeleine in a revenge against holiday resort bosses who sacked him.

Monteiro, who was killed in a tractor accident four years ago aged 40, is said to be the new prime suspect for local police.

He was fired from his job in a restaurant at the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, a year before Madeleine vanished.

Yesterday it emerged Monteiro, from Cape Verde off the west African coast, was convicted of theft in 1996.

He was told he was being deported but received a presidential pardon. His shocked relatives said the claims had left them “devastated”.

Monteiro’s Portuguese-born widow remained in hiding yesterday and was too upset to speak.

But his brother-in-law defended him and insisted Portuguese police had not been in contact.

Speaking outside his country home near Praia da Luz, he said: “I strongly believe that if the police do consider he is a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, they are looking at the wrong man.

“It wasn’t as if what happened there with him losing his job destroyed his life.

“He got work elsewhere soon after. He was working at the time he died. He is not around to defend his reputation so others have to do it for him.

“My sister does not want to speak about it. She has a young child she is trying to protect. The police will do what they have to do but we don’t want to say any more about it.’’

Madeleine’s doctor parents Kate and Gerry, both 45, from Rothley, Leics, have been made aware of the theory but their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said they “will not comment on speculation”.

There were mobile phone 'calls/traffic' from all the T9 who were 'near' the apartment when Madeleine 'disappeared'

So THEY too have to be 'explained' don't they?

Yes, because the Police have stated that the McCanns aren't suspects but does that also include the rest of the T9? I don't recall that being mentioned.

You're right, this is all spin to hide the fact the SY asked for phone info and wants the reconstruction like Joanna morais posted, the subtle message won't miss those that have something to hide.

At least this article quotes people speaking on his behalf, better than the one in CM. Here in the Algarve, people always go from one job to another during the summer season, it's a fact of life. So, why would this guy be more upset about losing this job than any other. He worked at the Millenium restaurant from 4 to midnight and probably didn't even know that there were apartments at the other end. Feeble "evidence" at the least.

It is fairly obvious now that this is a detraction tactic which seems to have worked well. Most newspapers and TV news have picked it up. And the e-fits are forgotten. Even on this forum people are discussing it. It's a non event. And if he was a major suspect why wasn't he mentioned on crimewatch.

There's a huge efit of Smithman here, no photo of this "suspect" - I assume photos of him do exist and if he is black man or Latino or anything other than a Gerry doppelganger then the person PJ suspect is not the same as the one SY suspect.

Again - how NEAR to Ocean Club was he? Lagos is "near" to Ocean Club and he lived there. Was there a single tower in PDL and that is near enough? or was there one there and others a half mile or a mile off? How far apart are cellphone towers, I have no idea. I lose cell connection on the highway at each place I switch towers on the way to work, that 's 24 miles and there are three places my connection gets dodgy, that's one per 8 miles, ish. 8 miles is not nearly near enough.

If McCanns are not suspects BECAUSE of the Smith sighting when Gerry was seen by many others to be at Tapas or apt 5A at that moment, then it was someone who looks very like him. I doubt this person fits that bill, so now PJ and SY have some work to do together.

We don't know but SY and PJ would know what towers there were and why this person was said to be near. Why would PJ put him near the Ocean Club if there were towers further off and he only pinged on the one that was there serving town?

There are many variations, but standard towers in suburban areas cover 2 or 3 miles and are spaced 3 or 4 miles apart. That is probably about the US spacing of towers but I can't think the technology differs that much from place to place since it's all pretty new technology.

A single tower placed on a hill could easily span PDL and Lagos if they are 15 miles apart.

That being the case I would hardly think the PJ would declare he was "near" OC based on a ping from his home tower, he was also "near" his house.

Was there a tower in PDL so the tower covered just that resort area? If so, then there may have been more than one - a quarter mile is suspicious, 8 miles or 20 miles away is hardly that.

if there was one in PDL and one nearer to Lagos they could tell if the suspect was in PDL and then moved towards home. If there were several in PDL, even better, for determining where the cell phones all were, those of T9 and those of any suspects.

I don't believe that this man is truly a suspect at all. And he certainly can't be the main suspect based on a cell phone ping and a minimal criminal record alone. Certainly even Russell O'Brien would be a better suspect. He was allegedly away from the table for up to half an hour. He could have arranged to sell Maddie whilst he was gone, but the McCanns trust their friends implicitly. I don't really think Russell did this, however, the scenario is much more likely than tractor man petty thief turned child abductor.

It is all smoke and mirrors. Let the McCanns believe that they are not suspects and that the PJ and SY have different suspects in mind.

hard to disagree with the last line although i do think they may think otherwise.  

I don't think OBrien went to his apt to sell Madeleine.

This guy though took 5 euro from a till, that's his "criminal record?" How many bar tenders are there out there who fudge it a bit, and pocket as tips the money left on a bar to pay for the last drink. Taking from a till is stealing but it is not a criminal record that anyone would take seriously. Hardly a gateway to abduction.

The allegation that he MAY have been stealing from the apts to fund a drug habit has no proof and the five euro wasn't even enough obviously to notify the police, what a joke.

I think the PJ would have more than this on him to have him as a suspect otherwise it's just embarrassing. And he bears no likeness to any of the efits of the men meant to be lurking near 5A "staring" at it.
