John Geraghty is a friend of the McCanns and some of the first reports of this man surfaced when he was said to be storing the Renault Scenic for them after they fled Portugal after being made Arguidos.
 
A shy character and seldom interviewed, John Geraghty is certainly a major player in the case and he is named in the PJ’s police files (see below).
 
In an article in The Times on September 24, 2007, which you can read on this site HERE, it said;
 
John Geraghty A 68-year-old businessman from Leicestershire who now lives on the outskirts of Praia da Luz. Offered to store the McCanns’ hire car so that they could commission independent forensic tests

An elusive man, John Geraghty is presumed to be the Mountsorrel businessman, John Geraghty of Geraghty Construction Ltd based in Sleaford, Lincolnshire. In a rare piece of footage on Sky News, John Geraghty appears briefly in the following video clip. He is the white haired man reading the newspaper, and speaking with a Yorkshire accent.

Translated it says:
 
As the key to the church, they were delivered on May 07 or 08, what happened the suggestion of a person resident in the parish, John Geraghty, so the couple could attend church, calmly, without the pressure of communication social. The key was delivered by someone from the church to John Geraghty, the faith to reach the couple, with the permission and consent of the deponent.
 
So, Jose Pacheco gave permission and consent of the church keys to the McCanns via John Geraghty but two obvious questions are;
 
Was Madeleine hidden in the church or not?
Why was Geraghty the go-between for the keys to the church…what was his role?

Father Jose Pacheco who comforted Gerry and Kate McCann in the days after Madeleine vanished later claimed that he had been the victim of some form of deception.
 
The priest even ordered every trace of the Madeleine appeal removed from his church of Our Lady of the Light.
 
Friends of Jose Pacheco said he could no longer bear to discuss the case.
 
“Even when his friends broach the subject he immediately changes it,” said one.
 
“He says it is an extremely unpleasant situation and the McCann family only ever brought him problems.
 
“He even told one friend they ruined his life.
 
“There are two completely different Pachecos, the one before the McCanns and this shell of a man after the McCanns. He is a nervous wreck.”
 
What were the problems that forced Father Pacheco to become “a shell of a man” after the McCanns?

After Geraghty Construction failed to pay a bill to one of its clients, the client – Paul Young – marched into the company’s headquarters in Sleaford Lincolnshire, armed with a five-gallon drum of industrial sealant and poured it all over the office computers and furniture.
 
Despite causing £24,000 worth of damage Paul Young walked free from court after Lincoln Crown Court Judge Michael Heath took sympathy on him and said he had acted out of “understandable frustration”.

Conclusions
Some amateur sleuths in website forums have surmised that John Geraghty is in fact a Freemason and is acquainted to Gerry McCann through this association. A “John Geraghty” shows up on a NHS document for an Infection Control Committee where he is listed as “Estates”. Whether this is the same John Geraghty who is a friend of the McCanns is unknown and attempts to find out through the hospital at Leicester proved fruitless. Our emails and phone calls were not answered.
 
The Geraghty in Praia da Luz certainly had access to the church and from the interview above we know he attended the church and is the same man. For more speculation, read the article on Pat Perkins and her friend Aurelio.

Why would you want to have an independant forensic test carried out on a car if there wasn't something suspicious about it or you had something to hide and wanted to be the first to know.

I could never understand why they did that because the POLICE take the lead in the investigation not the McCanns!

Well, Mitchell did say that there was a perfectly good reason for anything which may or may not be found! Another puzzle, why would you have to explain something which wasn't found?

It could be that the McCanns wanted to have their own diagnosis , or to stop any contamination by the Police in case they tried to plant some DNA in the Car to implicate the McCanns.

the only dna which would implicate the mcCs would be madeleines dna. None in the department could be found, so where would the PJ get it from. No sorry don't believe they thought it could be planted. there wasn't any to plant.

But they didn't have the car tested and it wasn't stored in a safe place I.e. Gerartys place in pdl.



The hired car was taken back to budget and I believe one off the family wanted to keep the car and they could, if they payed the full price for it....the mccanns refused.....they could off had another car but they wanted that specific car....the car was sent back to where it originally came from.


The mcanns wanted the car for free and got a shock when they were asked to pay for it.

The parents of Madeleine McCann are considering commissioning their own independent forensic testing of the vehicle in which the Portuguese police allege that traces of their missing daughter's body were found, it was reported yesterday.
A Portuguese magistrate is currently studying a dossier of evidence against Kate and Gerry McCann, which includes details of their daughter's DNA allegedly found in their hired Renault Scenic car. The evidence is said to relate to two samples found in the car, one of blood, the other of unspecified bodily fluids, and to a further quantity of hair allegedly discovered in the car's boot.

But the BBC last night quoted a source close to Mr and Mrs McCann who said they were considering carrying out their own tests on the vehicle, which was being kept in a "safe place to avoid any possibility of evidence being planted".

Local police are investigating a theory that the couple killed their daughter on May 3, perhaps by accident, and used the vehicle to transport her body at a later time. The Renault was not hired until 25 days after Madeleine disappeared from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal. Mr and Mrs McCann have spoken of their fears that they are being framed.

Despite having been named as official suspects in the investigation, the couple have not been given details of the evidence around which the police are building their case. In further unconfirmed reports yesterday it was claimed that the Portuguese investigating magistrate, Pedro Anjos Frias, who was given the 4,000-page dossier on Tuesday, may demand that they hand over some of their possessions for further investigation, including Mrs McCann's diary and the Cuddle Cat toy she has carried since Madeleine's disappearance.

In a separate development yesterday, the McCanns said that they would not seek to use money raised as part of the campaign fund to find Madeleine to pay for their defence. "They have decided not to seek to use those funds for their legal support," a spokesman, David Hughes, said. "Gerry and Kate's view is that if they take money from the fund it might be that 90% of people who made donations aren't bothered about it. But if 10% of people are bothered about it, they don't want to upset them."

The fund's trustees later said that they had decided not to permit the money to be used for lawyers' fees, despite expert advice that it would have been legal.

There was speculation in Portugal's Jornal de Noticias newspaper yesterday that Judge Anjos was considering asking British police to question the friends of the McCanns who were on holiday with them when Madeleine vanished from their apartment in the Praia da Luz resort, presumably to check their statements against answers given to police by the McCanns in interviews last Thursday and Friday.

Under Portuguese law Judge Anjos has until the end of next week to decide whether to take further action in the investigation, which might include ordering further searches or reviewing the couple's bail conditions.

Description of the work:
--- On the above date, accompanied by my colleague named above, I went to the company offices of the vehicle rental company "A.A.Castanheira - Budget" in Albufeira. There, in compliance with higher orders, I requested information about the vehicle previously used by the McCann couple, Renault Scenic, licence 59... I was informed that the vehicle was returned to the company on 23 September last, at 15h30, at their Lagos premises. Soon after that delivery a Budget employee, Henrique S., drove it to the company premises in Faro where it was parked until having been taken to the premises of Renault Portugal in Oeiras where it was delivered precisely on 25th. I was furnished with copies of the vehicle contracts between Budget and Gerald McCann, which are attached, where one can verify [observe] that the period for delivery of the vehicle terminated at
12h30 on 24 September 2007.

--- In order for better clarification my interlocutor [the lady with whom I was speaking] put me in telephone contact with Sra. Isabel P. in Budget management. This lady explained that the firm AAC-Budget used that vehicle under a contract they have with Renault Portugal. The contract that gave them [AAC-B] the right of use of that car had already terminated and therefore they had already asked for the McCanns to return it in order for them to deliver it to Renault. They had informed the McCanns that they could exchange it for another vehicle should they have intended to continue to use the services of the company. Given that they had shown interest in continuing to possess that specific vehicle they were told that the only way that that could be done would be if they had proceeded to buy it, to which they had responded negatively and therefore they had returned it.
--- Afterwards, also under superior determination, we proceeded the work with a view to determine who owned the property that the McCanns had recently inhabited at Rua das Flores ... Luz - Lagos.

If they had done tests on it then they would of either kept it quite because they did or didn't do it or if they did, the evidence would off been the same.

Strange, I got the impression they had run tests on it, me and many others I feel sure. Were they bluffing? I even thought I read of the name of the forensic firm who were carrying out the tests.

Ummm, that's a laugh.!!!

And they could off also bluffed and said, we had them done and the result is the opposite of the pj or..


They actually DID have it done because where was the car for 2-3 weeks after the mccanns fled back to the UK but knew it was the same result so kept quite about it .


But the mccanns did want THAT specific car but didn't want to pay for it, they wanted it for FREE, so if they were that desperate to clear themselves why not ask Brian to borrow them the money...or get him to rehire the car.


As for stating they were going to hide it to stop something being planted in it......how bloody ridiculous does that sound.

What about the 15 of 19 markers that Stuart Prior said was enough in Britain to go to Trial ????? Where did they come from?

i have no idea how much dna tests would costs for them to be found and run on the car, but surely if they knew it was something which was totally incorrect they would find a way to find the money to get it done.
