Forensic team switches their hunt for Madeleine McCann to a water plant

SCOTLAND Yard detectives hunting for clues to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are expected to turn their focus to scrubland around a water treatment plant where a prime suspect worked.

British officers are due to start scouring the area near the resort of Praia da Luz on Wednesday, according to Portuguese police sources.

They are to concentrate on areas close to a water treatment sub- station, a derelict farmhouse and an abandoned well.

Drug addict Euclides Monteiro was working at the plant in Lagos, four miles from the Ocean Club apartment where Madeleine was staying with her parents Gerry and Kate, when she vanished in May 2007.

Analysis of mobile phone data showed Monteiro was near the apartment on the night she disappeared.

Monteiro, who had served a jail term for burglary, died in a tractor accident, aged 40, in 2009.

His widow has insisted he had nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

Specialist search teams yesterday prepared to move after six days’ painstaking work at a hilly site close to the centre of the Algarve resort.

British experts, including forensic archaeologists, have criss-crossed the site with sniffer dogs clearing dense brush, conducting finger-tip searches and using ground-penetrating radars.

Fibre optic cameras have also been used to search a network of sewage pipes running under the soil.

The team has found and analysed items of clothing and bones from sites they have excavated but nothing significant to the investigation is believed to have been found.

The 12-strong British police contingent – led by Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood – are taking a two-day break to coincide with a Portuguese public holiday tomorrow.

It is believed they will work from Wednesday until Friday and then return to the UK.

Preparations for the new search come as senior detectives on the team ready themselves to quiz a number of suspects who lived in and around the resort where Madeleine disappeared, aged three.

Portuguese sources have revealed that the men, including three burglars, all with drug convictions, are likely to be questioned in the “very near future”.

Although the Scotland Yard officers cannot actually question the suspects themselves they will sit in on interviews carried out by local detectives.

Kate and Gerry McCann have said they were “encouraged” by the progress made by police.

The searches and interviews are part of a fresh investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance launched by the Met last July, codenamed Operation Grange.

Portuguese sources have revealed that the men, including three burglars, all with drug convictions, are likely to be questioned in the “very near future”.



Aha ! Do they were socks though and if so, is one missing. That is the question.

There will not be a burglar left in Portugal. With the on-going reporting of arrests "soon" for the last six months, they will all ave fled over the un-closed borders.

The dead tractor man has had his DNA taken and he was exonerated ...non off his DNA was found in or around the flats where the assaults took place.

If we are expected to believe that 'three burglars, all with drug convictions' are in the frame, then one can only conclude that they must have had some local ground level intelligence re apartment 5A at the time ...

My feeling is that if they are going to pin it on somebody it will be someone we haven't heard of yet. And somebody who is not alive. Which means dead I suppose. I'm beginning to feel that I don't think they will whitewash this. Because if they do the truth will come out eventually. Twenty thirty years down the line and they got the wrong person. Won't look good.

I'd just love to know what the McCanns know, that they can commit a crime and watch someone innocent take the blame. It isn't as if the McCanns have committed a minor crime, they've committed a very serious crime, against their own daughter. I'm not accusing the McCanns of murdering Madeleine, I'm saying that even if the McCanns story that Madeleine and her siblings were left alone while the McCanns went out and Madeleine disappeared without their knowledge, their crime is still very serious.

However the fact that the McCanns have done everything they could to save their own skins, including hindering the investigation, I honestly believe that the McCanns are more involved with Madeleine's disappearance than leaving her along with her siblings, alone in that apartment.

Hamish Campbell, who was in charge of the review into Madeleine's disappearance, was in charge of the investigation into Jill Dando's murder. He pinned Jill Dando's murder on Barry George, even there was no evidence to show he did the murder.

Barry George was eventually released from jail, thanks to his family fighting for justice. While it was plainly obvious that George had been jailed for a crime he didn't commit, he lost his claim for compensation.

What I'm trying to say is, it didn't take 30yrs for it to be established that Campbell framed Barry George and it will take even less for it to be established, if Redwood does try to frame an innocent person, for Madeleine's disappearance.

When it happened to George, people were unaware that Campbell was taking steps to frame an innocent man.

Redwood is a different kettle of fish, he has blabbed to the media, about not making the McCanns persons of interest to him, when he knows full well that they were the perpetrators of Madeleine's disappearance. Redwood has also blabbed to the media, about people who are persons of interest to him, even though he has no proof that they ever played a part in Madeleine's disappearance.

However while many people are aware that Redwood has a cunning plan to frame an innocent person, in my opinion Redwood won't succeed. The PJ will also be aware of Redwood's cunning plan and in my opinion, they will make sure that this doesn't happen. After all, the PJ are in charge of this investigation, Redwood and his team are only assisting them.

Has tweeted saying the dig locations are based on Smith sightings and the drug dealers are not suspects but witnesses.

Know nothing about him, although an earlier tweet from him about Amaral's latest comments, supported Snr Amaral.

Just for anyone on the fence, looking for the faintest glimmer of hope. 

How can they say Tractorman was near the apartment? Looking at the phone record analysis in the files all they were able to produce was that a mobile tower "pinged" particular phones and surely the very best they can say is he was in the range covered by the PdL aerial which presumably includes a substantial area around the aerial.

The place doesn't look very large, so almost anywhere within the village might be claimed to be near the apartment.

I do get the gist of what you mean. But I don't know why DI Redwood told the press anything about who was a suspect or person of interest and who wasn't. Why not just say nothing. Sometimes I don't know what I think anymore.

Redwood's blabbing to the media, is why I have a problem with him being in charge of this review. Unless he was appealing for information, he should have kept his mouth tightly closed about who were persons of interest to him and who weren't.

None of the cops, including Redwood, are blabbing to the media.

I'm talking about Redwood blabbing to the media in the past and what I'm stating is, unless he was making an appeal for information, he should not have spoken to the media about any part of the case, that involved investigating potential suspects or people who were and weren't persons of interest to him.

While Redwood and his team, may not be speaking to the media at this present time, they are doing the digging, they are telling someone what they have found and if they are not telling the media what they have found, who is?

No one apart from those involved with this investigation, should know anything at all and that includes any objects that have been unearthed and more importantly suspects who are to be interviewed in the near future.

One simple flaw with the "Tractorman" arrangement.

The Smiths did not describe a BLACK man.

How are they going to get out of THAT one?
