Yes, that is normal. These hard liners offer us three choices. 1. Become a Muslim. 2. pay the Jizya (the taxation part of it) or 3. be killed. Paying the tax is only a part of it. the rest consists of total submission. This even extends to religious buildings which must not be maintained let alone improved. It is already being practiced in certain places. It's just getting more publicity in this instance

It's gone way beyond that in Mosul from all accounts. FGM has supposedly been imposed on all girls from age 11 to 46. If true it shows. as nothing else could show, how barbarous and backward they are. In addition they've apparently expelled all Christians and fashion shops are now required to veil their mannequins. Then it gets better. Posters have been put up in Mosul for families to hand over their unmarried daughters to take their part in Jihad by providing; shall we say comfort for the fighters.

I'm not sure about some of that. The bit about providing comfort for the troops yes. Several of their prominent alleged scholars have announced this to be a good thing. (good for who) Presumably such girls would be over 11, so where exactly that would fit in with the FGM I'm not sure. I assume not even a terrorist would take a girl straight after having such a filthy, and barbaric thing done to her.

I also wonder in light of another report that in Afghanistan a young girl who was raped is now expecting to be killed by her family for bringing shame on them. (another sign of their completely twisted logic) Well what of any girl who is used to give relief to these militants. Is that not just another excuse for legalised rape? Has she not brought shame on the family honour? So the fault lies with the scholars promoting such medieval; sorry, just make that evil practice.

It all certainly shows they have one thing, and one thing only on their minds.

An old acquaintance of mine worked in Saudi also, commissioning mobile generators for GEC in the late 70's. He was not allowed to drive by the company having his own Saudi driver supplied when needed. The reason being if he was involved in a collision or knocked a Saudi down while driving it would be his fault, even if the other driver was at fault, or the Saudi threw himself under the car.

Yes, that was always a possibility, and it was possible to get insurance to cover it. the rates were extortionate, but it was only common sense for an expat to have it. As you say in any confrontation the expat would be wrong. If for example you hit a camel you could guarantee it would turn out to be the finest racing camel the Kingdom had ever seen. The blood money for a human being was out of this world and that is why I for one had insurance. 'cos if you couldn't pay it you were going to jail.

One of our lads in Taif hit and killed a sheep one day. The family gathered round so he wasn't going anywhere. fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you looked at it he had just been paid, and was on his way in to the bank to send his money home. they made him cough up the equivalent of £400. Our government relations people said they could have got him off with £100 if he'd driven away.

We didn't help matters I'm afraid. We said the company was getting him a new car, a Ram Charger no less We said he mustn't feel sheepish about driving it as long a he remembered not to do any ewe turns.

I was extremely lucky, I never personally came across any suicidal Saudis and never hit anything. One big problem was at ARAMCO there was a safety prize every month. starting off at a pen and propelling pencil set and leading up to a holiday in Houston.

Us peasants in the training centre never got any prize at all. You could guarantee absolutely that at least one of the little horrors would have a prang every month, and very often several prangs.

The instructors were deemed to be responsible for them 24 hours a day. Ergo no safety prizes for us.

As Expats we were never allowed to speak to any Saudi Women alone, so I don't know what they think of the system. You have very probably hit the nail on the head there Badboy. People in poverty, are more likely to fall for Baghdadis rhetoric. It's an old ideology but it still works. In his position, consolidation would seem to make more sense than anything else. That depends on whether these Jet fighters are a myth or not.

That is exactly how Hamas got elected. Fatah were corrupt beyond belief and kept their own people in abject poverty. While their leaders were running round Gaza City in Rolls Royces and Jaguars, the general populace had their electricity and food rationed. Hamas came along and promised them better; schools, hospitals, mosques and homes. Why wouldn't the people vote for them? Some of them probably regret it now, though.

Hamas are now negotiating with the North Koreans to buy weapons. God help us all.
