MADELEINE McCann’s parents have been accused of spending money on legal fees instead of the hunt for their daughter.

Ex-detective Goncalo Amaral has called on the couple to reveal just how much they have spent on “court cases”.

And he said it was “thousands of pounds not spent on looking for their daughter”.

The McCanns sued the ex-Portuguese police officer over claims he made in a book about Madeleine’s disappearance.

The couple said his assertions stopped members of the public actively looking for her.

They were initially awarded £430,000 in libel damages.

But the judgment was overturned on appeal, a decision later ratified by Portugal’s Supreme Court.

The couple have now gone to the European Court of Human Rights to try to get the ruling overturned.

Madeleine vanished while on holiday in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.

Mr Amaral said it will not be his fault if the McCanns run out of cash, insisting he has never taken any legal action against them.

He told news website Portugal Resident.com that the couple should explain “how much money they have spent on lawyers’ fees”.

He added: “These were thousands of pounds not spent on looking for their daughter.”

Last night a spokesman for the McCanns, from Rothley, Leics, declined to comment.

"The news published by the Daily Mail and other British newspapers about an alleged lawsuit I would have brought against the McCann is completely false. I did not file any lawsuit or demand any compensation from the McCann", Gonçalo Amaral told us, today after questioned about a story published by that tabloid, saying that the McCann may have to pay him 750,000 pounds for compensation because of a complaint filed by him, wiping out the Fund for the search of Maddie.
"The case reported by the 'Daily Mail' concerns a complaint filled by the McCann themselves with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg against the Portuguese State. If that court decides any compensation must be paid, it can only be the Portuguese State to pay them, McCann, for failures of the Portuguese Justice system. If they lose the case, they will never, under any circumstances, have to pay any compensation to anyone”, said the former investigator of Polícia Judiciária.
Gonçalo Amaral also told us that "in the next few days" he will file a formal complaint against the Daily Mail and other British newspapers, which printed the same story, with the Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO), a self-regulatory entity of the British Press.

Seems like GA ...has finally had enough.......making a complaint to Independent Press Standards Organisation...this week

It really isn't before time that a complaint was made, but the media should show the professionalism they purport to practice and monitor their own standards at source.

Their well below substandard use of their media privileged has ruined the life and occupation of the lead investigating officer into Madeleine's disappearance, caused Laboratory employees to lose their jobs ruined the economy in a holiday resort in Portugal and claimed the life of a woman, through suicide in a Leicestershire hotel.

What great reporting standards the gutter press/media can claim to have achieved..

I didn't know lab assistants lost their jobs ...why was that.....

True though ...the mccs have ruined many lives ....including Maddie's....

Very unusual for UK paper to quote Mr Amaral so he can set things straight, some of the recent Press I don't think will be enjoyed by the McCanns, snippets of truth coming out

It was the Forensic Science Services Lab in Birmingham which closed in August 2009 that had reputedly processed all evidence to that date from Madeleine's disappearance.
