Re: Aisling Symes - found dead near her home
I just knew I should have taken my own advice and left this NZ thing alone.
I don't know enough about the case. I didn't know that the woman had been seen by children, for a start. BUT ... to answer eddie's query ... I can say that 'Asian' is insulting because it erases national identity for a start; it also ignores the actual racial subtleties within that vast hemisphere.
The only people who use 'Asian' are white folks, to describe people in broad brushstrokes who are 'not white', but who aren't 'black' or Caribbean or God knows what.
Sometimes Pakistani people or Chinese people and so on will employ 'Asian' when talking to the western media or people because the term is something the Europeans understand, but not because it says anything at all about the many and varied racial and cultural and linguistic and national identities which inhabit that vast, vast continent.
I'm boring myself. I don't want to labour this point or consider the NZ issue, which I suspect will prove a very different tale from the one which has obsessed me. I hope it's a happier outcome, I really do.

utter rubbish, i would imagine that many asians would take offence at your comment. I am English, if i were involved in a crime there is a fair chance that any witness to the event would decribed me as either european or British, - i would be offended by neither, although i would be rather gutted that my criminal act had not gone unnoticed

Nah, my post is not a wind up, just discussing matters - there would have been a hue and cry if say another race had been seen near the area. Sounds fictitious anyway. This forum has always been one of intelligent discussion and there have been no wind ups until recently with some new posters coming upon the scene.

Anyway, the thread shouldn't get waylaid by bickering over race.
I will say though, arachnidae, (because I'm argumentative and can't leave anything alone!) that a white person describing a white person (French or English or whatever) as 'European' is not the same as a white person describing a French or English person as 'Asian'. The difference seems obvious to me and is the reason why so many do find it offensive.

Agree! Talking about a "person" is probably the better way to go in this case then there will be no backlash. Not so personal and we don't really know for sure if there was a lady and dog in the first place.

At this point we shall just have to agree to disagree - arachnidae extends hand to shake and moves on...

Re: Aisling Symes - found dead near her home
I think it's shocking that people are accusing the mother of being careless. How dare they?
This happened in a split second. The mother had her back turned. I defy any parent to say they can see their children 24/7.
As though the mother hasn't got enough to deal with. I can't believe the insensitivity of some people.

I agree about the McCanns for sure. They have to muscle in on everything.
I just think it's harsh what that women said about careless parenting. People like that just annoy me because they make out that nothing like that could ever happen to them, because they never take their eyes off their kids for one second. I don't accept that ANY parent can watch their kids like a hawk 24/7.
There but for the grace of God......... and all that.

It didn't take the Pros long to infiltrate the board and start making inane comments about "sick Asians". Expect the whole board to be whooshed shortly.

Definitely not me but maybe a troublemaker is using my name or maybe it's just a name they use.
Carly, I'd appreciate it in future if you do not attribute comments on blogs to me as I don't post on anywhere but here and, very occasionally, Sky.
