I reduce the fat content from Cranks' original of 200g/7oz to 175g/6oz
Ingredients
500g/1lb dates
175g/6oz butter
300g/10oz plain flour
100g/4oz soft brown sugar
125g/5oz oats
Cranks adds 2 tablespoons of water to the oats/flour mixture but I find the texture is better without.
Method
1) Set oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6
2) Grease and line a baking dish or line with parchment. I use a dish that is 9.5"/24cm square.
2) Steam the dates over a pan of boiling water for 10 minutes until soft, then mash loosely with a fork. I add a tablespoon of fresh orange juice for flavour and texture.
3) Rub the butter into the flour and add the sugar.
4) Add the oats and mix lightly.
5) Spread half the oat/flour mixture into the oven dish and press down firmly.
6) Spread the date mixture on top.
7) Sprinkle the other half of the oat/flour mixture over the dates, so it resembles a rough crumble.
8) Bake for around 30 minutes.
Eat hot or cold. Nice with cream, ice cream or my favourite, Booja Booja Stuff In A Tub. Mostly I eat this cold on its own.
Good idea to mark into squares while hot but not to separate until it cools a bit.
This looks divine! I am goign to buy the ingredients Monday (next shopping run) and I will make this.
Let me know what you think, eddie. I reckon it's a fairly healthy sweet treat!

Well Done 4timesanan
I am seriously going to be in trouble soon as I have a lovely little victorian armchair that has always been comfortable but today I nearly got stuck in it !! I thought I was losing but when I weighed myself I am the heaviest I have ever been ever. Keep it up , it might persuade me to join too, only a few doors up from me, every monday night.

Re: Who is on a diet at the moment
it is worth joining .....i find the points sytem ok and i am learning to eat healthy food. Not long ago I tried to change some plugs got stuck behind the TV .Untill 7yrs ago i didn't have a weight problem, i used to cycle to work and back, a round trip of 13miles... and weekends i would never get a bus , used to cycle everywhere. ..but when i was made redundant from my job i got a bit depressed I didn't keep it up and gradually the pounds piled on....i also got into the habit of eating a lot of fast food...Check out you local leisure centre, I go to the over 50s swimming twice a week. ..its only £1.75 a session and includes a session in the gym too...not done the gym yet though. good luck

hi slimmers
For those on a budget, Argos have a steamer only £8.80. .. lt has 2 tiers and a rice bowl. ..just bought one today and looking forward to using it, I was never one for eating veg but they do taste nice when steamed...any recipies or ideas appreciated because this is my first time steamer.

Hi 4 timesanan4timesanan wrote:angelina do you steam or boil your veg, ?
I used to be a slimming World consultant. If you steam veg then you lose less vitamins. However, if you prefer boiled veg, then do that. It's more important and satisfying that you eat something you enjoy rather than something you're not too keen on. I'm not keen on steamed veg. By the way, I lost 5stone, 12lbs with SW in a year and that was 10 years ago. Never put it back on Keep going!

Re: Who is on a diet at the moment
hi chrissie
ok, i have only just got into eating veg and bought a food steamner yesterday, i am on WW points and have lost 5lbs in 3.1/2 wks. first time ever on a diet. didn't gain weight untill i was made redundant and gave up cycling, last year i had a heart attack and cardiology referred me to WW. I think slimming world accept hospital referrals too. How does Slimming World differ?....

Re: Who is on a diet at the moment
That's brilliant, well done! Slimming World has red and green days. Red is when you can eat as much meat, fish, veg and fruit as you like with a measured portion of carbohydrates. Green days are as much potatoes, pasta, veg with a measured portion of protein. Plus you get your treats.
To be honest, both WW and SW work as long as you keep motivated. The most motivating thing for me, rather than the numbers on the scales, was feeling my clothes getting looser and dropping dress sizes. That's what I concentrated on to keep me going.

I do a lot of stir fry. If I'm doing a meat dinner then I usually boil but not until they are soggy. I've got a steamer for the microwave but have to admit I've never used it. I'll have to start because my sister's uses hers all the time and says it's a great way to cook them.
Things will be easier now the weather has changed a bit, I can do more gardening and walking.

I did the Rosemary Conley plan once....it worked ok but I found it quite difficult and a bit boring. You can't eat between meals but I can't cope with that. I think going from 6.30 in the morning until 1 pm is just not realistic and then from 1pm to about 730 - 8.30 for dinner. I had to wait that long because my husband wasn't home much before 7.30 but now he's semi retired it's easier to eat earlier.

Re: Who is on a diet at the moment
I have about 60 lbs to lose. I have been going to WW since early Feb, and have lost 13 lbs so far.
It is my belief that no food group should be banned when you are reducing your weight. If you try to cut out carbs completely, you will feel deprived and that is setting you up for failure. Even if you get to target, have you adopted lifelong changes to keep the weight off? No! So you end up eating carbs again and piling it all back on. Likewise, fat free is dangerous, as you need some fats for certain vitamins. I think the way to go is everything in moderation. That's why I love WW, you lose the weight without making any total sacrifices. If you want a bar of chocolate, you can work it into your points. The same with any food. And it is an eating plan that you can stay on forever without compromising your health in the least, in fact it nudges you towards healthy eating from all food groups and that definitely gets my vote

Re: Who is on a diet at the moment
Hi 4timesanan
I have been on 24 points but have had to drop to 23 this week. What a difference a point makes! I shall miss that point... LOL!
Well done you, as well, keep going! I shall check that website out (Fatsecret). Thanks for that

only a very small weight loss for me this week, but for 2 wks now i have had a very very bad cold and not been as good as i could be.
has anyone else had this cold..nausea, nasty sinus headache around the eyes and forehead, chills, sweats and extreme tiredness, now its settled on my chest and i am back on the amoxcillin, again. it is a horrid lingering thing.

I had that for 4 weeks over Christmas/New Year. It's very difficult to keep to a diet like that because often you just want something "nice" rather than what you should have. Hope you shake it off soon.

I've had all of that following a cold around 6 weeks ago. I have only just stopped coughing in the night, but still have the sinus headaches and tiredness.
