Witness statement
Jorge Manuel Rocha da Silva
Date: 2007.05.16
Occupation: Businessman
Place of Work: Putos & Graúdos, Lagos
He was born in Portugal but in 1967 (when he was 6) he went to the US with his parents and returned in 2003.
In November 2006 he moved to Lagos with his wife and two children.
As his wife already had some experience in clothes retail, they decided to open a shop Putos & Graúdos, for selling children’s clothes.
He thinks that it was in February of last year that he got to know Michaela Walczuch who told him that she had a company – Romigen – which could produce business cards for the witness’s shop. He was given a sample (joined to the files) and the witness placed an order for the proposed product. He did not pay, but has till not received the cards, thinking they have not yet been completed.
Michaela told him that her partner in Romigen was a man called Robert who was in England. That this company had an Internet site where they published the cards they produced as well their real estate activities.
She said that she liked to talk with the witness and his son, that she liked his manner and because of the fact they had lived in the States, they had good ideas.
In subsequent conversations with Michaela, she got to know that one of his sons – J**** - was good at graphic design and had knowledge in the area of computers and could help them with the maintenance of the Romigen site. They exchanged ideas about this but nothing was ever made concrete.
Almost two months ago Michaela introduced Robert to the witness. They had some meetings where they discussed improvements to the site. They talked about the possibility of the witness becoming a partner in Romigen as they all had good ideas, but they never talked in terms of values. The conversations always related to the expansion and maintenance of the site.
They told him that the existing site had been done by a designer called Sergio or Sergy, of Russian nationality. That they wanted to reform the site and this work would be done by this individual (S), who would inform them of the cost. This cost would be met by Robert, Michaela and the witness.
However, at the current date and in spite of having met several times, they have never talked about the project process.
The witness knows that subsequently Robert went to the UK for a clinical examination, for defect to the eye and that there was the possibility of an operation to replace the eye.
He does not remember when Robert returned from the UK, but he knows that Robert and Michaela turned up at this shop on May 1st bank holiday. He remembers that the shop was closed that day.
On the 2nd May Robert and Michaela turned up at the shop as a surprise (they did not let him know previously) and arrived at 11.00 – 11.30. They, together with the witness and his son J*** went to the Taquiler Goncalves café to talk about themes relating to their previous discussions.
It was mainly in this meetings that Robert proposed that J**** should reconstruct the site. The latter said he would help with ideas but that he was not a website designer like Sergy whom Robert had told them about.
The witness makes it clear that neither he nor J***** knows Sergy.
They were in the café for about an hour until they left at 13.00.
On the following day May 3rd they met at the South West bar in Lagos marina at about 11.30. He does not remember whether Robert or Michaela phoned him to ask for the meeting or if they had agreed upon it the day before. The witness and J**** went to the place on foot. When they arrived Michaela and Robert were already there. They talked there for half an hour, but as it was very noisy, Robert suggested they went elsewhere. The four of them left in the VW transporter to Palmares Golf, about 5 minutes away by car, a place where the witness and his son had never been. They remained there conversing for about 3 hours, very much at the insistence of Robert. In spite of the witness and his son being hungry, Robert prolonged the conversation, saying that he was not hungry. Only at about 16.00 did Robert and Michaela drop the witness and his son near to their shop. On that day they had no further contact, neither personally or by phone.
On the following day, the witness heard from the news about what had happened to Madeleine.
After this occurrence, the witness and his son met Robert and Michaela again, but he does not remember the date. Naturally the conversation turned to the missing girl, Robert having been informed that he lived 100 metres away from the apartment from which she had disappeared.
Robert informed him that he was to be an interpreter for the police, and even if he did not want to be there was nothing he could do to avoid, that by law he could not refuse this. And this was the reason he gave for having to postpone some meetings they had planned.
They met a further two or three times, once on the 10th or 11th May at 11.00 upon the suggestion of Michaela and in order not to always meet in cafés, Michaela suggested they met at her house. He cannot remember the exact name of the street but it was near the pharmacy Lacobrigense. They talked for about an hour. They went for lunch in the Bom Bom restaurant and returned to Michaela’s apartment until 16.30 – 17.00.
He did not notice any difference in Robert’s behaviour, or in his way of being, before and after the disappearance of Madeleine.

Witness Statement
Marina Paulo Raposo Batista Castela
Date: 2007 – 05 – 16
Place of Work: Ocean Club
Occupation: General Manager
She comes to the process as a witness. She heard about the disappearance on 4th May when she arrived at work at about 09.30.
She saw the suspect, Robert Murat, for the first time on that day at about 12.30 when the witness went to meet GNR officers whom she cannot identify, to open the doors for them and speak to guests staying in apartments in block 6. The objective was for the police to talk to these guests and show them the photo of the girl and establish whether they had any information that could lead to discovering her whereabouts.
When she was beginning this task together with GNR officers, this individual appeared, she does not know from where, he immediately saw what operations were going on, speaking ostensibly to the guests from the first two apartments, explaining to them what they were doing there, showing much will and anxiety in the transmission of this information.
Given his behaviour, for a few minutes the witness thought that he belonged to one of the security forces, namely the PJ.
The GNR officer who was with them did not speak and English nor say anything.
After the second apartment, the witness says that Robert’s attitude was not the most correct, as he spoke to the guests in a very dry and affirmative way and she took the initiative to introduce herself to the clients, not letting him speak.
She thanks that is the reason why he immediately disappeared and did not accompany them to the rest of the apartments.
During the time he was with them that afternoon, several times he said how sorry he was about Madeleine’s disappearance, that he had a daughter of the same age and that we had to do everything possible to find the girl.
She had not seen this individual before this incident and knows nothing about him or his lifestyle.
She only saw him again on the morning of 7th May when she came to make statements to the PJ officers in apartment 6 of block 6. She was in the building between 11.00 and 13.30 and remembers that the individual entered and left the building at free will. They said hello to each other and did not speak any further that day.
On the following day 8th May, when she took some cleaning staff to the PJ station for questioning, Robert went to her and greeted her with two kisses. He asked her name. She did not see him again that day and thinks he was with the PJ officers.
She saw him again the following day 9th May at about 10.30 at the PJ station. At that moment he approached her and said the witness was known by a friend of his, Michaela. The witness confirmed this fact.
After this day she saw him no further. Apart from the contacts she had with him she had seen him on other occasions from a distance, in the company of journalists.
When questioned, she said that she knows Michaela (she has a German surname which the witness cannot pronounce) who lives behind the Del Rei restaurant in Lagos for the past 10 years.
They got to know each other through both being Jehovah’s witnesses and frequenting the same church, opposite the financial building in Lagos.
That she would attend the meetings with her boyfriend at that time, called Luis Antonio. Afterwards they got married and went to live in the apartment where they still both reside. She does not know whether they are still married today.
She knows that about 3 years ago, Michaela left home and went to live with another man near Faro, the witness does not know whom this individual was. She does know that Michaela was away for a little while, returning home.
Since that time (about 3 years ago) she has not had any further contact with Michaela because she was disassociated from the Jehovah’s witnesses of her own will and due to the reasons mentioned above.
That about 2 or 3 months ago she was readmitted to the JW . last Sunday, on 13th May they were together at a meeting where she was with her daughter. They greeted each other and the witness told her that she had met her partner, Robert. She confirmed that they had a business together on the Internet and that he had come to live in Portugal to expand his business, having arrived recently.
The witness says that he went to help the police in P da L with the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. She (MW) said that this was typical of him, to want to help. She added that he had even delayed medical tests in the UK in order to be in Portugal and accompany the investigation. Michaela appeared a bit displeased, due to the fact that their Internet business had experienced delays.
She does not know whether Michaela had a relationship with Robert as he was never referred to on this level and she never saw them together.
When asked about Michaela’s personality, the witness said she was a very cold person namely in the interpersonal relationships with her mother in law, daughter and with friends. At the time she was married to Luis Antonio (whom she still lives with) she did not work and liked to take care of her appearance. Given the coldness of her personality, they never had a close relationship.
The she speaks, Portuguese, German and English well. She says she had good computer skills. She has not seen her in the OC area for almost 7 years, which is when she came to live with Luis Antonio, who cleaned the resort pool.
Recently Michaela has been working in real estate companies. At this moment, as far as the witness knows, she has a home selling business with Robert on Internet and that they are in the process of expansion, to include other services.
She recognises Robert as the man presented as a suspect in the abduction of Madeleine on the television during the last days and as resident of Casa Liliana situated close to where the events occurred.
According to what Michaela told her, he spends a lot of time in England. Due to the witness’s profession she passed by the house every day (the OC has various lost nearby, called Palm Bay) and she has never seen that man there, which makes her think that he spent a lot of time abroad or in another place.
As far as she knows, Michaela was also in the UK with her daughter during the carnival holiday in 2007.
No more is said. Reads, ratifies, signs.

Sir:
Relating to the present investigation related to the disappearance which occurred on the 03 of May of 2007, in the temporal hiatus between 21H05 and 22H00, of a child which turned four years of age last Saturday, identified as Madeleine McCann, and who was staying in apartment 5-A, block 5, of the establishment 'Luz Ocean Club,' herein referred to as LOC.
Conforming to the results of the initial participation, the minor's parents, Gerald McCann and Kate Healy, were enjoying holidays in our country, together with a group of citizens, also British, for a total of nine adults and eight children. They arrived on the 28th of April, having booked their return for the 05th of May. On the day in which the facts are reported, the parents, as was usual, went to dinner, together with the rest of the group, to a restaurant in the interior of the resort, known as 'Tapas', whose distance is around 50 metres from the apartment where Madeleine lay sleeping, and her twins siblings of two years of age. As was habitual, around 21H05 the father, Gerald, went to see the children, having entered through the sliding door at the back of the above referenced apartment, which always remained unlocked so as to facilitate the access to/from the restaurant and the pool. After checking, although briefly, he verified that this three children were in perfect conditions, sleeping profoundly, although the door to their room was more open than was normal. Upon returning, he established a conversation with a friend, with whom he played tennis that afternoon, at the same time that one of the elements of the group, Jane Tanner, when she was walking up lateral artery of the apartment, she saw the back of an individual with a child in his arms, not being able to ascertain if it was little Madeleine. Because she did not have knowledge of the disappearance, and when she found out one hour after, although odd, she did not comment on what she had seen. Around 21H30/21H35, another element of the group, Matt, went to check on Madeleine's apartment among others, not having entered the children's bedroom, yet related, laconically, that there was a light in the room. He also entered via the sliding door, which was, as already mentioned, always unlocked. He states that everything was well, although he had not seen the missing child. Around 22H00, when the mother, Kate, went to go check on the children, she saw the door to the children's room completely open, the window also open and the curtains drawn to the side, which did not correspond with how they left everything closed. She verified that Madeleine could not be found. She searched for her daughter instantly in the interior of the apartment, confirming that she was not there. Immediately, she advised the rest of the elements of the group she was dining with, and they extended the searches with auxiliaries of the LOC, and contacted the local authorities who would alert this police.
Immediately, diligences were begun to localise the child, on the day of the occurrence and on subsequent days, using impressive means in a insistent and repeated way.
We followed all leads, viable and non-viable, using binomials and other means of search and detection. Even with this titanic force, it was not possible, in the investigation, to localise the missing child.
Of the many elements collected, and pointing out, that at this moment in the investigation, the occurrence of an unusual situation, relative to an individual identified as Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat.
This individual, voluntarily, went to the GNR post alleging that he was an interpreter of the English language, and could be useful in helping to realise diligences. He was directed to the elements of this police which were at the locale. Right on this day and on the following days, he helped in various diligences realised by this police, namely in the inquires of the British functionaries of the LOC.
At this point in time we noted immediately a strange comportment, especially with his social communication skills, alleging that he did not want to be photographed, or to make allusions to this presence.
We stress that at this time, we were contacted by various journalists, who alleged that they had noticed his strange comportment, and that he showed himself to be extremely curious. When they tired to capture his picture, he repudiated this vehemently, alleging that he was father to a little girl, the same age as Madeleine and was in the middle of a divorce.
Confronted with this incoherent comportment, Robert Murat, denoted grand nervousness and offered to stop providing services, if that was our desire.
For the investigative strategy, in order to better control and collect relevant elements, we opted to continue to use his services. Also via communication with the Leicester police authorities, the locale where the McCann family lives in the U.K., we were informed that an English reporter had suspicions regarding Robert, for the reason of his evasive comportment when she tried to take his picture on the telephone, which he said was to his daughter, making it in a loud voice, as if he wanted to demonstrate to someone.
The target resides in Vila da Luz, and while this is not binding, that the route of the observed suspect by the testimony of Jane, went in the direction of his home. He has knowledge of the area where the facts occurred, maybe even more, knowing the routine of the natives and people that are there on their holidays.
It is also stressed that some of the routes taken by foot by Madeleine and her family, went through the locale where he lives. It is further added that reported in the present investigation is anonymous information, alerting us to the eventuality of the abductor being found in a residence of the locale in proximity to block 5, and the same accesses various sites of a sexual nature, trading, inclusively, encrypted communications.
Thus, suspicions fall on the target and for this reason sir, I am requesting that you suggest to the Magistrate for search warrants for his below referenced homes, in line with legal instruments and in the possibility that they may help progress the investigation:
1. RUA AMALHETE, CASA LILIAN, LUZ, LAOGS, residence of that target's mother, *******
2. ******* Lagos
3. ******, residence of Michaela Walczuch
4.******* Lagos
5******** Lagos
Equally we ask for search warrants for the vehicles:
1. VW Transporter *****
2. Peugeot 205 - *****
3. Hyundai Getz ******
We also request telephone conversation interceptions and recordings of the target's numbers, with the cellular locale indication:
1. ****** (number TMN)
2. ********.
The number of his mother JENNIFER MURAT:
1. ********
His companion, MICHAELA WALCZUCH:
1. **********
Besides these numbers, we ask to proceed with the interceptions of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) where the same operate and may come to operate.
We additionally ask for a digitally supported detailed invoice and list of trace back and cellular localization of calls to the numbers listed above, in the period between the 25th day of April 2007 and the present date.
We also request authorisation for the voice and image register.
This being, the investigators await your consideration, sir, at your convenience, pursuant to these terms.

CONCLUSION

Letter from Leicester Constabulary
to Portugal Incident Room/Madeleine McCann
6th May 2007
Sir,
Lori CAMPBELL a reporter from the Sunday Mirror has contacted Leicestershire Police to report the following.
Lori has been speaking to an interpreter who has been helping authorities with the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. He has only given his name as ‘ROR’ (sic) and has not given any background information about himself.
Lori has become suspicious of Rob as he has given conflicting accounts to various people and became very concerned when he noticed his photo being taken by the Mirror’s photographer. ‘ROB’ stated to Lori that he is going through a messy divorce in the UK at the moment and that he had a three year old daughter just like Madeleine, who he is separated from at the moment. He made a big show of telephoning his daughter in front of reporters, and Lori felt that he was being too loud and making a big thing of speaking to his daughter on the phone. The things that ‘ROB’ has said to Lori have raised her concerns about him.
Could you please call Lori who is still in Portugal to establish further details to identify ‘ROB’ in order to eliminate him from your enquiries on 07917 xxxxxx.

PJ Record 8th May 2007-
At about 20.00 the police received a phone call from a number that could not be identified, from a person with a female voice speaking in correct Portuguese, who did not want to be identified for reasons of safety. She refers to an individual who abducted Madeleine, who knows how to keep quiet and is quite close to the police. When asked who she was referring to she said it was an individual who resides in Praia da Luz, who has an English mother, who speaks this language very well, who was near the area since the disappearance of the little girl, supposedly with the intention of helping the investigation. She said this man was called Robert and that he used to consult Internet chats of a pretty heavy sexual nature. He would also use Internet for contacts with different acquaintances he had in other countries, especially in the UK. She said most of the mails he sent were encrypted due to the monitoring of the kind of content they possessed. This is why she wanted to alert the authorities about the characteristics of this man, who, in her opinion, could have sexual motives and knows the area perfectly for committing this type of crime

Thanks to Astro for the translation.
Processos Vol VIII
Pages 1957 (pdf page 16)
On the 11th of July, at around 10 am, in the offices of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Polícia Judiciária in Portimão, before me, Paulo Ferreira, Inspector, and Mr Guilhermino Encarnação, Joint National Director of the Polícia Judiciária, has appeared arguidos Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat, who has already been duly identified in the process, to be questioned. Following this diligence of questioning and given the fact that there are manifest contradictions between what the arguido has stated and what the witnesses, Rachel Mariamma Jean Mampilly, Russell James O’Brien, and Fiona Elayne Payne, who have also been duly identified in the process, have stated, the present diligence is carried out.
This diligence was carried out in the presence of the arguido’s defendant, Dr Francisco Pagarete, as well as Mrs Carla Esteves, a translator and interpreter who translated all the statements into the English language and vice versa, and the same was started at around 12.00 am.
The first person to be confronted, Rachel Mariamma Jean Mampilly, said that she confirms her statement on page 1212 of the process, namely that she saw the arguido who is present at this confrontation at around 11.30 pm of the 3rd of May 2007 under the circumstances that she leaves explicit in the document.
The second person to be confronted, Russell James O’Brien said that he confirms his statement on pages 1320 and 1321, namely when he refers that he saw the arguido Robert Murat on the night that the facts under investigation took place, which is to say the night when Madeleine disappeared, at around 1.00 am of the 4th of May, and in everything else confirms his deposition in terms of the contact that he had with the arguido.
The third person to be confronted, Fione Elaine Payne said that she confirms her deposition on pages 1323 and 1324, namely when she refers that she saw the arguido for the first time, personally, on the night of the 3rd of May at around 11.30 pm on the outside, near the door to the McCanns’ apartment, in the company of elements of the GNR who had meanwhile arrived on location. In everything else she confirms the circumstances under which she approached the arguido.
The fourth person to be confronted, arguido Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat, said that what the other persons in this confrontation said is a lie, because on the night of the disappearance of Madeleine he was not at that location, and in fact during the night of the 3rd of May 2007 he never left his house.
The persons involved in this confrontation said nothing further, the present document was read out to them and as they agree with its contents, it is to be signed by all the subjects.

Re: Investigation of Robert Murat
Processos VIII
1967 to 1968
Witness Statement of Lyndon James Pollard
Date: 2007.07.11
Although British, he has resided in Portugal for many years and understand the Portuguese languages. He does not need an interpreter.
He has lived in Portugal for many years (about 24), since he turned 17. At the time, his family moved to Vila do Bispo. His father acquired a restaurant between Burgau and Boca do Rio.
He remembers that in the initial years his family, likely due to the restaurant, got to know Robert Murat’s family. Sometimes, his family and Robert’s would get together. He remembers that Robert’s family then resided in Almadena.
From these meetings, he vaguely remembers Robert’s older brother, who he called Richard. The deponent and Robert’s brother were of similar ages. He knows that he [Robert] has a sister but he does not remember her, as both she and Robert were children.
The question made regarding the sexual relationship between Robert and animals, namely cats and dogs, the deponent rejects knowing anything about such episodes. He repeats that he did not have a relationship with Robert.
He does state that he knows well an individual called Carlos Costa. He was one of the few people who spoke English when the first arrived in Vial do Bispo. The deponent became Carlos Costa’s friend. He also became friends with other boys.
He remembers one time they got together—the deponent, Richard and Carlos Costa on a beach in Vila do Bispo. There were further people in the group. At this get-together, Carlos Costa and Richard had a fight of no importance, typical of adolescents, and seemingly without motive.
Relative to the personality of Robert Murat he can add nothing. He does not know him.
Confronted with declarations from Carlos Costa on pages 1286, 1287, and 1288, he cannot confirm in the episodes described.
He finds them a bit ridiculous.
And nothing more was said.
Reads, ratifies and signs.

Re: Investigation of Robert Murat
Processos, Vol V
Pages 1286 to 1288
Witness Statement of Carlos Manuel Mateus Costa
Date: 2007.05.15.
Hour: 16H15
Location: DIC Portimao
Profession: Businessman
That he comes to the process as a witness and states:
• At seeing today and yesterday’s notices in the media, he has decided to give the following statement.
• States that he has know Robert Murat for about 25 years. That he worked with him at “Jacinto & Murat” from 1982 to 1984. This firm was owned by Robert’s father who has since passed away. At this time, Robert was eight years old. Immediately one noticed that Robert had a strange personality, staying away from people, and not wanting to engage. He had somewhat of a violent attitude. He remembers an episode where Robert, on the veranda on the first floor of the firm, threw vases from that exterior without checking to see if anyone was underneath him.
• At this time, the witness lived in Vila do Bispo. He was the neighbour of a British couple, P.L. and P.L. who are now deceased. This couple had a daughter whose name was L******, who was 17 years old. They were friends of Robert’s mother, JAN MURAT. She was always with her son and they would often go to the home next to the deponent’s in that same village. At this point Robert was 12 years old.
• L******, the neighbour already mentioned, told him that Robert had tried to have sexual relations with her mother’s cat. The animal responded by scratching him on various parts of his body. These injuries were seen by the by the deponent given that he [Robert] had visited the Castelejo beach in Vila do Bispo on various occasions. On one of these occasions, he saw Robert scratching at excoriations. He was told by L****** that Robert had killed the cat out of spite. He also states that he witnessed a macabre episode perpetrated by Robert. He saw him once again trying to have relations, this time with the family dog, who ended up being forced into the house, situated in Almadena, Eiras Velhas.
• Beside this, he states that when he went to the beach with Robert, he [Robert] would stay away from the rest of the group (about 15/20 metres) and not say a word to anyone the whole day.
• He also adds that a cousin of Robert, of British nationality, whose name he does not know, and who lives in his house, has suffered an assault by Robert. For this reason, she left the home. These acts were hidden by Robert’s mother, who protected him and who never punished him. At this point, Robert was 16 years old.
• He would like to add that according to what he knows about Robert, he was not surprised that he was described as a disturbed person who could very easily turn violent. He is also someone with a sadistic and deviant sexual personality, and who also is misanthropic. This is based on contact with him for 15 years.
• He also states that it is his opinion that Robert could have committed a crime of this nature—abduction of a child. That he does not have the capacity of getting involved in a paedophile ring. If he did abduct this child, then the witness believes she may be dead. He concludes this from Robert’s violent and deviant personality. He adds still that he also was violent with his mother when he was reprimanded and would react by kicking her.
• He asserts that Robert did receive psychiatric treatment whilst in the U.K.
• He has no other elements to offer the investigation.
• And nothing more was said, finds it in conformity, ratifies and signs.

Re: Investigation of Robert Murat
Processos VI
1581 to 1584
Witness Statement of Maria Cecilia Pereira Pires
Date: 2007.05.23
Profession: Journalist for Portugal Resident
She has been a journalist for about 16 years, but has worked for the above-referenced paper for about one month.
Questioned, responds that on the 4th of May, 2007, she was asked to go to Praia da Luz, Lagos, in order to cover the case of a missing child.
She clarifies that she was informed that the disappearance of the child occurred in the Mark Warner Ocean Club resort, and that the family/child’s family surname was McCann.
She responds that when she arrived at Praia da Luz around 09H30/10H00, and as she headed to the GNR post where she gathered some information, she then headed next to a group of journalists where she learnt further case details.
Because so little time had passed since the disappearance, she took the decision to walk around the area of the resort.
She adds that this decision was also made due to the information that the child may have left the apartment of her own accord, and may still be in the immediate area.
During her walk, she came across a bare patch of land, situated north, a few meters from the resort. She met a male individual, about 50 years in age, who approached her and asked if she was involved in the [read organized?] search for the missing child.
The deponent told him that she was not, even though she confirmed that she was looking, in order to calm her conscience a bit.
In this context, the individual proposed that both of them head towards a house, apparently unlived in, but not abandoned, with the intent of looking for the child, and so it would not appear like trespassing.
After entering the parking area of the residence, where they called out to see if anyone was home, they verified that a woman was inside. This was a woman of advanced age, around 70 years old, 1,5 to 1,6 metres in height, with grey hair combed and coiffed in the shape of a “banana”. The individual with the deponent asked this older woman to help them search for this child. This older woman agreed.
She clarifies that the individual headed toward the pool zone and the deponent, accompanied by the older woman, lagged behind as the older woman walked slowly.
During this time, the older woman exclaimed to the deponent that she was bothered with the entire situation of the disappearance and further commented that the parents had to be going through great anguish.
The above conversation occurred in English, with the older woman indicating that she lived about 100 metres from the resort, and that the night prior she noticed the arrival of the police due to their sirens. This was around 22H00.
The woman in question told her that she had been having dinner with her son when she heard the sirens, and assumes that it was at this time that the disappearance was noted.
She clarifies that the older woman did not speak about a ‘child or a boy child’ and specifically mentioned “a girl child”. The deponent did not find this strange because by that time, May 4th, everyone knew it was a girl child that had gone missing.
The woman above also indicated that her son was working with the police in trying to locate the child.
She adds that after searching the area around the residence where they found nothing, (the same can be said for the pool neat the house), they were stopped by a neighbor. From what she could make out, he was German but asked them in English what was going on, and then after responded that the Police had been searching the area with dogs.
During the conversation with the older woman, the deponent was introduced to this individual. The deponent confirmed that she was a journalist. The other individual told them that he was searching for the child. The deponent then left the area and the other individuals staying behind.
This situation appeared to her very normal.
She responds that during her work, she came to know the son of the older woman. The journalists referred to him as Robert Murat. He was someone who was involved with the journalists and police with much freedom. He spoke both English and Portuguese.
She states that on the 5th of May, the British journalists affirmed that Robert Murat was one of the suspects in the missing child case. He appeared very much surprised at this and confirmed that he was going to back-off so that he would not be the subject of such comments. Following this point, it was very difficult to contact him.
She clarifies that when she saw the pictures at the information kiosk operated by Robert’s mother, she was certain that his mother was the same one she had met on the 4th.
She responds that when she read the notices, offered by Robert’s mother, she was taken aback by one sentence. That sentence read that the child had gone missing at 07H00 on the 4th of May. This information was supposedly proffered as a result of a telephone call she received. As a result, she set up the information kiosk. The deponent found this strange, given what had occurred between her and this woman on the 4th of May.
She affirms that she became aware of the name of the older woman from newspapers. On the day she initially met her (the 4th of May) this older woman did not identify herself.
She adds that she has many times pondered this situation but always thought it was of no significance. Only today and when she saw what was written did she decide to communicate the fact. She knows with absolute certainty that this older woman was aware of the disappearance given what this older woman had stated to her the morning of May 4th.
Because she is asked, the deponent responds that she bears no grudge against these individuals who she has never seen before. She is certain that this appears an attempt to construct an alibi. There is incongruence between what the older women is stating regarding the 4th and what can be read in the newspapers of today (23 of May, 2007). She felt it her obligation to communicate these facts to the authorities.
And nothing more was said.

Letter to Amaral regarding investigation thus far on Robert Murat 2007.05.15
This is a report from Inspector Luis Pereira of the National Directorate of the PJ in Lisbon to Dr G.Amaral.
Note the DATE, and without putting forth all the flowery politic-speak and legalese:
--- the National Directorate deems that having now analysed the content of the work done for the case, and other material outside the file, certain previously authorised phone taps must be cancelled immediately, they being of no further interest to the case; [At this date that can only mean the McCanns]
--- but in their place, the National Directorate VENTURES TO SUGGEST seeking competent court authorisation for additional new phone surveillance over R.Murat and M.Walczuch [two of the four pages being given over to fully detailed specifics], and
--- a for a domestic search warrant for S.Malinka's residence.
The "report" concludes, in customary well-mannered language, that it is submitted [merely] for the consideration of the recipient to determine the most appropriate course of action.

Today, as ordered, we went to the city of Lagos to determine the various residences used an/or owned by R.Murat or his family members.
--- Having gone to Elras Velhas behind the Celero restaurant, next to the EN125, in Almadena, it was possible to speak with a resident of the area having land next to Elras Velhas, who affirmed knowing Murat very well, having given him exclusive rights to sell some land when he worked for the Remax estate agency, and that his [RM's] mother had sold her Elras Velhas property long ago, not knowing exactly how long ago but he was sure it will have been during RM's divorce.
--- Visually checking the mail boxes outside the property the names of R.P.Harris and R.Elliot were noted.
--- At the address of Urb. Chesgal ... in Lagos it was possible to determine from the owner of the ground floor apartment that the referred apartment had been acquired by an individual named Miguel about 10 (ten) years ago, she also having stated that she remembers that the first owner had been a foreign female not knowing her nor remembering her name.
--- At Rua do Jogo da Bola - Lagos, it was not possible to locate the "Bora" café or any other commercial establishment. That café was then found on Rua Conselheiro Joaquim Machado in Lagos, the proprietor of which, in conversation, stated that he did not know R.M. nor had he ever seen him frequent id establishment.
--- With the intention of location Quinta do Sto. Phunurius, it was possible to verify that it was in Rua D. Joao III in Ameijeira - Lagos, and in conversation with several residents it was possible to determine that it was a Quinta [farm estate] owned by an English citizen and managed by a North American man who lives at Travessa do Forno in Lagos, the people also having stated that the Quinta is used for "parties" of a sexual nature.
--- It was not possible, however, to determine if R.M. currently frequented that Quinta.
--- Nothing more was recovered of interest to the present investigation.

On the matter in hand he said:
The deponent was the business partner of John Henry Queriol Murat, from memory in the period between 1972 and 1977 or 1976, in the partnership Jacinto & Murat, it being that they knew each other form 1967, the time when John Murat, still single acquired a house in Burgau which John later sold.
- Equally he recalls John having another business partnership with himself and another Englishman, called Burgau Investimentos Turisticos Lda., in which John also sold his share a short time after the business was formed.
- When after 25 April 1974 John Murat went to England around 1975, he stayed only in his rented house in Lagos, in Pedra Alcada, they still being partners.
- Later around 1977, no longer being in partnership, John returned to Portugal, sold the house in Lagos and invested in a small estate with old houses in Almadena, Eira Velha, which he improved.
- John, in the meantime died, from memory that was 1985, living still at that time in Eira Velha in Almadena.
- He states that John, when he knew him, was a man of few financial resources, and his wife J.A.Murat, equally not being a person of large resources, his memory is that she was working in the Lagos Hospital as a nurse.
- The Murats had three children, Richard, Samantha and Robert whom he knew when they were growing up until around 1977, 1978, the time at which they parted company and John having gone to live in Almadena, contacts between them were virtually nil.
- Relating to Robert, the deponent only knew him up to his eighth year and he was sure that his lack of memories of Robert and his personality was due to John Murat's strict rule of not allowing children into meetings that he had.
- After this time at which Robert was about eight years old, only once more did he see him, about three or four months before (in 2007) when Robert called out "Jacinto" in the street, in Portuguese, and told him, in greeting, he was Robert Murat, affirming that he was still in Portugal working in real estate.
- No other contact.
- Regarding the Quinta da Falfeira, this property was his and his ex-wife's, currently his grand-daughter's, used by her son.
- Equally next to this property the deponent owns a house called "Casa de Avis". - He clarifies that Robert Murat never had access to those properties and even less to the key of any part of them, being very certain that he (RM) never frequented Quinta da Falfeira.
