Gardaí fear media could push Murphy over the edge
* Prison chaplain advises rapist over future* Concerns he could hurt himself or others
Ali Bracken, Crime Correspondent

Larry Murphy leaving Arbour Hill prison last Thursday Gardaí have major concerns about the way the media is pursuing freed rapist Larry Murphy and believe that the conduct of the press may be putting the general public in danger.

Commissioner Fachtna Murphy and his senior management team have been alarmed at the constant coverage of Murphy's movements and are worried that the pressure could ultimately lead to the 45-year-old either re-offending or committing suicide.

A senior source close to the garda commissioner said: "A highly stressed sex offender is the most dangerous thing that can happen. He is undoubtedly under huge pressure at the moment. We think he is already at high risk of re-offending. The media say they are trying to raise public awareness about him but in reality they may actually be putting people in more danger by the manner in which he's being pursued."

Retired assistant commissioner Martin Donnellan said the excessive media coverage of Murphy could be detrimental to the work of gardaí. "Too much hysteria is unhelpful. I am confident of the garda management system in place to monitor him. People should have faith in the gardaí to do their jobs," he told the Sunday Tribune.

Liam Herrick, of the Irish Penal Reform Trust, said he was concerned that some of the coverage was taking a "dangerous direction… Certain coverage has stepped over the line. The media need to act responsibly. Of course it's an important story but the media have to be mindful of not interfering with the work of gardai." Herrick added that the congregation of an angry mob outside a hostel in Coolock, north Dublin, last Thursday night, where locals mistakenly believed Murphy was staying, was a troubling development.

Fine Gael's Charlie Flanagan said the media coverage was creating a level of public hysteria over Murphy. "The media frenzy is unhelpful. Now is the time for calm appraisal. It's totally unacceptable that the media should engage in what is a job for gardaí. There's a thin line between public interest and the sale of newspapers."

Fine Gael TD Billy Timmins, from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, where Murphy is originally from, said some of the media coverage was unnecessary. "There are some aspects [of the media coverage] that have been going overboard and serve no purpose, particularly with respect to contacting Larry Murphy's family."

It can also be revealed that Murphy has sought the refuge of the church and is this weekend being assisted by a chaplain attached to the Irish Prison Service.

It is thought that the prison chaplain has been advising Murphy about the options available to him now that he has been released after serving 10 years of a 14-year sentence for the rape and attempted murder of a woman in Co Carlow.

The married father of two caught the 7.30am train from Heuston Station to Cork on Friday. He spent around three hours there, where it is understood he was meeting a friend from prison, before returning to Heuston Station where he was greeted by a television crew and gardaí.

The Catholic priest picked Murphy up in his car from Heuston and brought him to Kevin Street garda station where gardaí facilitated a private pre-arranged meeting between the two.

Murphy did not complain to gardaí about the conduct of the media on that occasion and did not engage with gardaí in any way during his several-hour stay at the station. However, he did make a complaint to gardaí about the "harassment" hours after he was released on Thursday. He left Kevin Street on Friday night accompanied by the chaplain and didn't inform gardaí where he was going. A large team of detectives from the National Surveillance Unit continues to monitor him 24 hours a day.

It is also understood that Murphy is considering taking legal action to prevent the media harassing him by following his every movement. Gardaí at Coolock last week told the suspected serial killer that they could not stop the press from following him and advised him to seek legal representation.

Murphy is regarded by gardaí as being a suspect in the disappearances and suspected murders of three women in the 1990s.

Murphy in secret location on orders of minister

Monday August 16 2010

FREED rapist Larry Murphy was last night staying in a secret location under the supervision of the Probation Service after the intervention of Justice Minister Dermot Ahern, it was confirmed yesterday.

Officials at the Probation Service were told to do "whatever was necessary" to get Murphy into a prisoner programme after two premises where he was thought to be staying were besieged by angry mobs last week.

Yesterday, it emerged that the move came about after Mr Ahern became concerned about the level of publicity surrounding his release.

Murphy left prison last Thursday after serving 10 years of a 15-year sentence for the rape and attempted murder of a businesswoman in a remote area of the Wicklow mountains.

He sought refuge in Kevin Street Garda Station in Dublin on Friday night after being pursued by the media and verbally abused by members of the public as he returned from a day trip to Cork.

The Probation Service had had no involvement with him because he had refused to avail of support services prior to his release.

It emerged yesterday that the minister instructed his officials to tell the Probation Service to "re-engage" with the sex offender as quickly as possible.

It is understood he was encouraged to accept help from probation officers by senior gardai and a prison chaplain whom he called for help. He is now staying at a secret location, and has been offered therapy and other support services.

The Department of Justice refused to comment, saying it did not discuss individual cases.

But the level of publicity surrounding his release led the minister to intervene.

Two Facebook pages have been set up. One, 'Don't let Larry Murphy out', has more than 20,000 followers, and includes a link to an online petition "to have Larry Murphy hung".

Options

Another Facebook page -- 'Larry Murphy location tracker' -- is followed by 4,300 people; while 'Beware Rapist' posters have been distributed near his former home at Baltinglass, Co Wicklow.

He had told gardai he did not intend to leave Ireland, but is said to be reconsidering his options.

The 45-year-old was jailed after abducting a woman from a Carlow car park in February 2000. He was sentenced to 15 years, but given remission and released after 10 for good behaviour. He refused to take part in rehabilitation programmes while in prison.

The rapist is being monitored by the garda's National Surveillance Unit, with plainclothes officers following him. He carries a mobile phone and reports to gardai daily.

What a f***ing joke. He is being protected now after what he has done in the past. The minister for justice should be ashamed of himself protecting this piece of scum

At large: Larry Murphy leaving Arbour Hill jail on Thursday
The Irish Mail on Sunday can today reveal sensational evidence linking freed rapist Larry Murphy to college student Deirdre Jacob, who disappeared in July 1998.

This paper has learned that Murphy – long suspected of being behind the disappearance of at least three young women – was doing work for Deirdre’s grandmother in her sweetshop at the time the 18-year-old vanished from Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Garda sources have revealed Murphy was carrying out carpentry work at the shop, which Deirdre visited just hours before she went missing.
The revelations will add fuel to the calls for better monitoring of Murphy following his release from jail for rape.

The MoS has also learned that Murphy was very familiar with the area where Deirdre lived and disappeared.

He once worked at a stables just half a mile from Deirdre’s home, and visited Newbridge again in the weeks before the trainee teacher’s disappearance to view a potential carpentry job at a local pub.

Murphy also returned to the Co. Kildare town two months after Deirdre went missing to carry out the work at the pub.

The links to Deirdre will add weight to the clamour for a law change which would allow gardaí to monitor Murphy much more closely in the wake of his release last week, having served 10 years of his 15-year rape sentence.
While the prospect of a convicted rapist on the loose is alarming enough, many people – including serving and former gardaí – believe Murphy may represent a far greater danger.

One officer involved in his rape case and the Jacob investigation said yesterday: ‘It requires a certain type of callous person to do what he did. He refused to take part in any treatment in prison and he will probably re-offend.’

Trainee teacher Deirdre was one of three women who went missing in the area before Murphy was convicted in 2000 of the abduction, rape and attempted murder of a woman in the Wicklow Mountains.

The 18-year-old was last seen as she walked towards the gateway of her Newbridge home on the afternoon of July 28, 1998. Earlier that day, she had visited her grandmother, Bridget Grady, at the shop she ran for many years in the heart of Newbridge.

Deirdre dropped in on the elderly lady before and after going to the local bank and post office. She then left the shop to walk home. It is about a 25-minute walk from the town centre to the bungalow Deirdre shared with her parents, Michael and Bernie, and her sister Ciara.

Student: Deirdre Jacob was last seen near her home
Her family home on the outskirts of Newbridge is concealed by tall trees and it has been established that Deirdre never made it to the front door.

At the time, nothing pointed to Murphy as a suspect; it was another two years before he was arrested after two hunters interrupted him as he tried to kill the woman he had abducted and raped.

Deirdre’s family discovered the link between them and Ireland’s most notorious sex offender only after Deirdre’s grandmother died.

The 94-year-old died in December 1999 and it was as the family went through her possessions that they discovered Murphy’s name on a cheque stub.

A senior garda involved in the investigation into the disappearance told the MoS: ‘Deirdre’s grandmother had a shop on Newbridge main street and after she died, when the family was going through her things, they found a chequebook stub with Murphy’s name on it. He did carpentry work for her but the family knew nothing about it. The grandmother hadn’t told them and the first they knew was when they found the receipt for the work at the shop.’

The Garda source said that in his view, the stub added weight to the belief that Murphy was involved in Deirdre’s disappearance.

‘No-one has gone missing since Murphy was jailed,’ he said. ‘It all points to him.’

Gardaí visited Murphy at Arbour Hill prison and questioned him twice about Deirdre. However, he refused to co-operate – or even try to clear his name by giving an alibi for the day in question.

The Garda source said Murphy had other links to the area. ‘Two years before Deirdre went missing, Larry Murphy did some work at a stables about half a mile from her home. And he was in Newbridge before she went missing viewing work at a local pub but he didn’t start that work until September.’

Between March 1993 and July 1998, two other women went missing in Leinster.

They were American student Annie McCarrick, 26, and Jo Jo Dullard, 21.
An only child, Annie had left her home in New York to study in Dublin and she went missing in March 1993 while on a trip to Johnny Fox’s pub in the mountains.
Two years later, on the night of November 9, 1995, 21-year-old Jo Jo disappeared after making a phone call at a public phone box in Moone, Co. Kildare. She had missed a bus and was hitching a lift home to Callan, Co. Kilkenny, when she went missing.
Gardaí have carried out extensive investigations into the disappearances but so far have had no breakthrough in solving them.

Two years ago, the Garda brought a team of FBI agents to Ireland to review the evidence they had accumulated. These experienced profilers, who specialise in investigating serial killers in the United States, concluded that the unknown killers matched the Murphy profile.

The rapist was released from Arbour Hill on Thursday and was met by a public and media frenzy. On Friday, he took the train to Cork, returning to Dublin later in the day. It is not known where he is staying.

Revealed: how the woman who was raped by Larry Murphy rebuilt her life ... and invited the men who saved her to her wedding
It was just after 8pm on Friday, February 11, 2000, when the 28-year-old locked the doors of her business and began walking the short distance to her car. As she made her way through the secluded car park, a man appeared in front of her.

‘Give me your money,’ he said. She refused, and he punched her in the face, breaking her nose and knocking her to the ground. Ordering her into her car, he demanded that she take off her bra, which he then used to tie her hands behind her back so tightly they hurt. He removed her boots and then drove her across the car park to the parking bay where his own Fiat Punto was hidden out of sight. Ignoring her desperate pleas, he bundled her into the boot of his car. ‘I have to because you’ll start making noise,’ he told her.

With the car stereo blaring to drown out her screams, the attacker drove 12km to a remote laneway in Beaconstown. He put her on the seat of the car, removed her trousers, took a headband in the Carlow GAA colours to gag her, and raped her.

When he was finished, he dressed and told her to do the same, before using her bra to tie her hands behind her back once more. Trying to calm the woman, he told her that his name was Michael and that he was from Baltinglass but worked in Dublin. He said he was married and even told her his children’s names. He also promised to set her free. Instead, he forced her back into the boot of the car before driving another 25km to Kilranelagh, a remote forest in Co.Wicklow, where he parked, leaving the sidelights on.

At about 10.15pm, the rapist pulled the woman out of the boot and made her strip naked. He dragged her down a forest trail before violently raping her another three times.

‘Make love to me,’ he demanded, kissing her mouth as he violated her. Placing a white plastic shopping bag over her head, he told her that she would never see her family again, and forced her back into the boot of his car. He began to suffocate and strangle her but the woman kept struggling to get the bag off her head. He took the bag and stuffed it in her mouth. She felt light-headed and struggled to breathe.

But she somehow found the strength to kick and managed to get her right foot out over the boot. She kept struggling until eventually she had her two legs over and could feel her feet touch the ground. As she struggled, he repeatedly slammed the boot lid on her legs, leaving her writhing in pain. ‘At one stage I asked if he had a gun because he may as well have shot me, the pain was so bad,’ she said later.

Suddenly the lights of an approaching car lit up the forest. The rapist let go of the naked woman, who stumbled forward, running in blind panic into a barbed wire fence.
The lights were from a car belonging to deer hunters Trevor Moody and Ken Jones. This was not their usual route – in fact, they took it only around four times a year.

At first, they assumed that the two figures behind the car were young lovers or people throwing out rubbish. But as the men, who were carrying rifles, drew near, they saw the violent struggle. Jones was just feet away from the rapist when he ran around the back of his car, jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off.
In the forest of Kilranelagh, the victim, still gripped by terror, thought she was also in danger from the two men who had saved her life. She had initially thought they were accomplices of her attacker. But as they untangled her from the barbed wire, she realised she could trust them. They gave her a jacket and drove her to Baltinglass Garda station. She had survived the attack: but could she now also survive its aftermath?

-------

The next morning, gardaí called to the Baltinglass home of Larry Murphy. He knew why immediately. Throughout his questioning and arrest, Murphy remained calm and collected. Initially he proclaimed his innocence to his wife, Margaret, before pleading guilty in court, guaranteeing himself a shorter prison sentence.
The calculated, sadistic and merciless nature of the repeated rape and attempted murder of his victim was truly shocking, but what was almost as disturbing was the fact that, outwardly, Larry Murphy was the last person one would think capable of such a vicious crime.

Locals knew him as a quiet man who worked as a carpenter and had even worked on the local courthouse, and who enjoyed a few pints before going home to his family. His wife recalled that on the night of the rape, he had come home and had sex with her as well.

Murphy was born on February 7, 1965, in Stratford-on-Slaney, just outside Baltinglass, one of seven children of Laurence and Sheila Murphy (née Dalton). A farm labourer, Laurence Sr had married his wife in June 1959 and they raised their five daughters and two sons in a modest home in the west Wicklow village.

At large: Larry Murphy walking in Dublin's Heuston Station on Friday
Larry did not excel academically at the national school in the town but showed an early aptitude for woodwork. At 16 he left school and a former woodwork teacher took him under his wing for six years, during which time he made wooden tableware.

His other passion was hunting, a hobby which meant he was familiar with the terrain around Baltinglass and the Wicklow mountains.

In the 1990s, Murphy branched out from woodwork and started working as a carpenter and roofer, a job which took him all over Wicklow and the east of the country, which meant he was often on the road.

As his business took off, he met and married Margaret, or Mags as he called her, and the pair set up home in Baltinglass. But while it appears that many people knew Murphy to see, no one knew him particularly well. He was described as a ‘loner’. ‘He stood apart,’ one local said.

And while Murphy had not been known for threatening behaviour, there were some who were unnerved by his rather bizarre demeanour. When he went to local pubs, he gained something of a reputation for staring at women and making them feel uncomfortable. He stared at one woman in particular on a continual basis. Then, not long before the attack that would make him notorious, he attacked his wife’s best friend.

He was driving the woman home one night when he took her to a remote laneway and made a pass at her. When she told him she wasn’t interested, he put his hands around her neck and tried to strangle her in the passenger seat of his car. She managed to escape but he ran after her saying: ‘Please don’t tell Mags.’ The woman did not report the incident to the gardaí.

In another disturbing episode, Murphy was in the Glen Lounge pub in Donard when he made an aggressive grab for a female customer. The incident did not escalate but when the woman spotted Murphy again on another night out, she pointed him out to her brother – and to his best friend Trevor Moody, the same Trevor Moody who would happen upon the brutal attack on the night of February 11, 2000.

While awaiting trial in the high security wing of Cloverhill in 2000, Murphy barely spoke to any of the prison guards or inmates.

His wife, who works in a supermarket, stopped visiting him in prison when he entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 15 years. She severed all contact with him but he continued to receive visits from his brother, Thomas, until 2005. When Thomas would ask him why he did it, he replied: ‘I flipped.’

This week, Thomas went on television to state that neither he nor his sisters, three of whom are living in Co. Kildare, would give shelter to Murphy on his release and want nothing more to do with him. ‘I hope no other woman suffers at the hands of Larry Murphy,’ he said in a public denunciation which has caused a rift with some of his other siblings who believe nothing should be said.

Said to be a ‘broken man’ after his son’s conviction, Laurence Murphy Sr died soon after Larry was imprisoned. But Murphy’s mother Sheila, who is in her mid-70s and living with a daughter in Wicklow, has made a number of visits to him.

In prison, an unrepentant Murphy made no friends and never spoke about his crime. But Murphy’s modus operandi, and his proximity to the area in which three women – Annie McCarrick, 26, Jo Jo Dullard, 21, and Deirdre Jacob, 18 – went missing, presumed murdered, made him a potential suspect in their disappearance.

In keeping with his secretive nature, Murphy refused to answer any questions about these investigations when questioned by detectives in prison and no evidence was produced against him. But the manner in which he abducted, raped and tried to kill his victim in 2000, coupled with the fact that he lived close to where these women were last seen, stoked fears he could be Ireland’s first serial killer.

No other women have disappeared since Murphy was imprisoned.

-------

His rape victim, whose strength and courage ensured Murphy was caught, has never spoken publicly about her ordeal. She has requested that she and her family are not identified. But rather than collapse under an understandable weight of grief and anger, those who know her say she has drawn on remarkable inner reserves to ensure he would not destroy her life. ‘She had incredible inner strength,’ said a local. ‘She was very successful in her business and continued to be successful afterwards. She would speak quite openly about what happened at the beginning.

‘She was very driven and motivated, a get-up-and-go girl. She made huge efforts to get on with her life.’

After she was examined by doctors following the attack, she requested a meeting with the men who had saved her life. In Baltinglass Garda station, she and hunter Ken Jones hugged each other and vowed to stay in touch.

In the months that followed, she sought out and underwent the most up-to-date and sophisticated treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

She also refused to allow the assault to change her life – or affect her relationships. Less than two years later, she married the man she had been dating at the time. Even more remarkably, she invited the men who had saved her life to her wedding – and introduced them to her loved ones.

‘She stood up in front of everyone and named them, saying she “wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them”. It was an astonishing tribute,’ one friend said. The three remain friends to this day.

She has since gone on to have children and, in living her life, has shown that she has no intentions of uprooting the home she has made with her family. She has made clear that whatever Larry Murphy did to her, she will never, ever be his victim.

This makes a mockery of the justice system and of his probable victims. I hope the police keep a very close eye on this rapist and ,most likely, murderer. Shameful that such a dangerous man has been released after only serving 2 thirds of his sentence for rape and attempted murder.

Sorry but I feel angry and sickened by this.

I thought they were not given early release if they did not abide by parole and probation rules.

Just goes to show justice does not serve the victim at all

Good!
I read what you posted. I agree that it's wrong he's being protected. But if protecting him means knowing where he is all the time, than it is also protecting his potential victims. I hope he is always being closely watched.

We sometimes make the mistake of thinking that the legal system only makes these types of unbelievable mistakes where we live. Sadly, this happens everywhere. Unbelievable!

The crime he is KNOWN to have committed should've got him banged up for life IMO. He would've killed that poor woman too, but for the arrival of the two hunters. I wonder how the families of the women who vanished ,and who were almost certainly also his victims, feel about this brutal and sadistic man being free again ?

Ive not seen any comments from any of the families as of yet. They must be in turmoil knowing he is the suspect in their daughters disappearance and the Gardai's hands are tied.

Sadly justice rarely suits the crime in our politically correct western society. A return to Capital and true Corporal punishments are long overdue in cases of murder, rape and child molesting now now that forensic science and evidence gathering is so accurate and advanced.

Freed rapist Murphy now in 'safe house' as he considers therapy
HELP: Suspected serial killer in secure accommodation

By Alan O'Keeffe

Monday August 16 2010

RAPIST Larry Murphy is in secure accommodation today after finally agreeing to consider undertaking counselling.

His involvement with the Probation Service will be voluntary and comes about as a result of the widespread hostile reaction he encountered since being turned loose from prison on Thursday last.

Although he snubbed all previous offers of treatment, he came to realise that he needed help from probation officers in getting accommodation. In return, he agreed to voluntarily keep in touch with them and consider using other support services, such as counselling.

There would be nothing to prevent him from opting out of contact with the probation service at a later date.

Murphy (45) was released from prison after serving 10 years of a 15-year sentence for the attempted murder, rape, and kidnapping of a young businesswoman.

Following intensive publicity and public reaction to his release, Justice Minister Dermot Ahern intervened to urge that the Probation Service and gardai to do their utmost to persuade Murphy to engage with a rehabilitation programme. He was at a secret location today provided by the Probation Service.

CHAPLAIN

He sought refuge in Kevin Street Garda Station in Dublin on Friday night after being pursued by the media and verbally abused by members of the public as he returned from a day trip to Cork.

The Probation Service had had no involvement with him because he had refused to avail of support services prior to his release. He was encouraged over the weekend to accept help from probation officers by senior gardai and a prison chaplain whom he called for help.

Two Facebook pages have been set up. One, 'Don't let Larry Murphy out', has more than 20,000 followers, and includes a link to an online petition "to have Larry Murphy hung". Another Facebook page -- 'Larry Murphy location tracker' -- is followed by 4,300 people; while 'Beware Rapist' posters have been distributed near his former home at Baltinglass, Co Wicklow.

The rapist is being monitored by the Garda's National Surveillance Unit, with plainclothes officers following him. He carries a mobile phone and reports to gardai daily.

It is believed women who work in prostitution have been on their guard since Murphy's release. A spokeswoman for a support group said that women who work as prostitutes are at risk every day and not just when "a known sex offender" is released from prison. There are a lot of dangerous men and a huge level of violence which goes unreported most of the time, she said.

It was reported yesterday that Murphy did carpentry work for the grandmother of missing teenager Deirdre Jacob.

The 18-year-old disappeared while walking home in 1998. Murphy did some work at her grandmother's shop in Newbridge before her disappearance. Deirdre visited the shop on the day she disappeared.

Taxi man tells of his fare from hell after picking up sex fiend

By Cormac Byrne

Saturday August 14 2010

THE taxi driver who took sex fiend Larry Murphy from Arbour Hill Prison had no idea that he was allowing a sex fiend into his car.

Niall Bates said Murphy remained coy on what he was going to do in the coming days during their trip around the capital on Thursday.

The shaken taxi driver said he thought the fare would be "just another job" until he spotted the large media presence outside the gates of Arbour Hill.

PLANS

Mr Bates, whose wife is due to give birth in the coming days, revealed that Murphy told him nothing about what he plans to do now that his decade-long stint behind bars has ended.

"Are you joking? He said nothing about what he's doing to me," said Mr Bates.

As soon as Murphy sat in the back seat of the cab he ordered Mr Bates to take him to Coolock Garda Station to lodge an informal complaint with gardai over alleged harassment by members of the media. He stayed at the station for over an hour before he emerged and instructed the driver to take him to the airport, before having a change of heart and telling him to take him to Grafton Street.

When the taxi arrived at the lower end of Grafton Street, Murphy leapt from the car and made a dash to evade the gardai and photographers that were tracking him.

He was eventually tracked down by gardai from the National Surveillance Unit and the Garda helicopter, who were following his every move.

Mr Bates said he was relieved the whole ordeal was over and he could get on with his life.

"I've had a terrible day," he said. "My wife is heavily pregnant and we just want to get out of here now."

Gardai investigating the disappearance of six women in the Leinster area, as part of Operation Trace, were extremely interested in Murphy.

Fleeing

An air of fear has gripped the country since 10.17am on Thursday when a clean-shaven Larry Murphy walked nonchalantly out of Arbour Hill Prison.

His home town of Baltinglass is at the epicentre of the panic, with his estranged wife fleeing the area in the days before his release to take her and his kids out of the spotlight.

Personally if it were me driving that taxi I would have refused to take his fare.

Leave freed Murphy alone pleads former prison boss

Saturday August 14 2010

A FORMER Mountjoy Prison governor has declared rapist Larry Murphy should be left alone to enable him to re-integrate into society.

John Lonergan, who retired from his post recently, said that some of the reaction to Murphy's release had given him cause for concern.

An ex-prisoner such as Murphy had a right to be allowed to "mend his ways," he said.

Mr Lonergan said: "Anyone with common sense will say that communities have a right to be protected and I can understand their fear and their anxiety.

"On the other hand, a person who has been sentenced, who has served their sentence, also has the right to mend his or her ways and to re-integrate back into society.

"Personally, I think the way it's being dealt with by the gardai -- managing it on a low-profile basis -- that is the only way.

"Any other thing, like society taking it into their own hands and standing outside houses picketing, that's over the top," he said.

The former governor said that the public needs "the belief that people can change".

Outspoken

Mr Lonergan had been outspoken on various issues concerning prisoner welfare during his 42 years' service in the prisons system.

When he announced his retirement last May, he launched another attack on what he called the "appalling conditions" in Mountjoy prison.

Mr Lonergan, who officially retired in June, said the options and flexibility available to a governor were very limited and "getting worse by the day".

During his career he made the headlines regularly with his hard-hitting comments on the prison system, but he admitted last night that he believed nobody "ever listened to me".

Mr Lonergan was a firm opponent to the building of a new prison campus at Thornton Hall in north Co Dublin to replace Mountjoy and wanted, instead, a massive refurbishment of the existing complex located at North Circular Road in Dublin.

He said it was very important to see people making their views known outside Dail Eireann and he hoped to use his free time to highlight injustices and support the underdog.

It's OK for him to say that. He is a Man. He isnt going to be his next victim. Any woman I have spoken to is terrified that she will be his next victim. No one knows what this man is capable of. He hasnt had any rehabilitation and has shown no remorse for what he did to his last victim. I know I am being more cautious when I am out alone.

These sort of people don't mend their ways. I am and always will be against capital punishment, but the punishment should fit the crime. 10 years is insufficient for this brute who inflicted such a terrifying ordeal on an innocent and defenceless woman.

Perhaps this prison governor should put Murphy up in his home..or has he got a wife and daughters? Nobody should be expected to have Murphy for a neighbour so they should lock him up and throw away the key.
