MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 PARIS ST-GERMAIN 1

Footie Thread................... - Page 8 307691 Footie Thread................... - Page 8 307691 Footie Thread................... - Page 8 307691

Summary
Lucas Piazon, with his first goal for the senior side, ensured honours were even between Chelsea and Carlo Ancelotti's Paris St-Germain side in the first football game at the new Yankee Stadium in New York.

The second match of the US tour saw us take on the French league runners-up from last season who although without recent new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, gave Roberto Di Matteo's players a good work out.

PSG were the better team in the first half and went into the interval one goal to the good, Nene having scored, but a more even second half brought a late equaliser and both sides had chances to win it at the death.

Seven Chelsea players were given an hour on the pitch and John Terry and Ashley Cole came on for their first pre-season action. Petr Cech who started had his first game too.

Arsenal fear Wilshere could be out until October as crocked midfielder waits to kick ball again

Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal fans that Jack Wilshere is still some way off a return to the first-team amid fears he could be out until October.

The England midfielder missed the whole of last season and suffered a series of setbacks during rehabilitation from an ankle injury, most recently when he was sent to Sweden for an operation on his knee.

Wilshere's progress is being carefully monitored by medical staff at the club, such as the fragility of the situation.

Portsmouth face liquidation within weeks after £3m Kanu wage demand, warns Birch

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch has warned that the club could be liquidated 'in two or three weeks'.
The 2008 FA Cup winners are due to start the new season in League One with a 10-point penalty for returning to administration but Birch says the club might be out of business before the big kick-off, against Bournemouth on August 18.
Pompey's first-team squad currently only contains 12 players and one of them, Nwankwo Kanu, has hit the club with a formal £3million demand for back pay. Footie Thread................... - Page 8 182123 Footie Thread................... - Page 8 182123

Spurs announced on Monday night that Modric has returned to training.

Tottenham manager Villas-Boas, who has revealed Scott Parker is likely to miss the start of the season because of achilles surgery, said: 'We understand this type of player revolt is not new but clubs have to protect themselves. We have to hold on to our values.

'The player is under club discipline. Footie Thread................... - Page 8 364777 The chairman feels the way he has behaved is not common, professional behaviour. Footie Thread................... - Page 8 36898
'We've been open with him, saying we are ready to listen to offers for him, which is uncommon.
'He's had a lot of interest in him before but he has behaved very professionally. This is the first time he has acted like this. We don't know what sort of advice he is receiving. Footie Thread................... - Page 8 585510

Tottenham, who face David Beckham's LA Galaxy on Tuesday night, have announced American-based sportswear firm Under Armour as their new kit manufacturers and Levy is furious the stance of Modric is overshadowing the club's PR drive. Footie Thread................... - Page 8 157799

Key midfielder Parker is adding to Tottenham's problems with a torn achilles, which is likely to need surgery and keep him out for up to six weeks.

Villas-Boas said: 'There might be a small tear on his achilles. We are evaluating the situation regarding a potential operation.

'It depends on our situation to have his surgery sorted as quickly as possible. That's what we are trying to work on.'
In addition to missing Tottenham's opening games of the season, Parker is definitely out of England's friendly against Italy on August 15 and is a major doubt for their opening two World Cup qualifiers against Moldova on September 7 and Ukraine on September 11.

Santi is coming to town! Arsenal close in on £15.6m deal for Malaga's Cazorla

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Spain's Santi Cazorla after the maestro agreed terms with the club.

The versatile Malaga man looks set to complete a move to north London in the coming weeks, a year after first being pursued by Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners have tabled a bid of around £15.6million for one of La Liga's brightest talents and hope that any deal can be concluded swiftly considering the player's desire to move.

Harry Redknapp has revealed that he will attempt to help save his former club Portsmouth from being shut down.

The npower League One outfit have been set a deadline of August 10 by administrator Trevor Birch to have their finances in order or face going out of business.

And ex-Pompey manager Redknapp plans to speak to Nwankwo Kanu, who has lodged a claim for £3million in pay, to see if he can persuade the former Arsenal and Portsmouth striker to compromise with the club.

He told ESPN: 'I will be ringing Kanu today to see if there is anything I can do. I signed him for Portsmouth on a one-year contract and Tony Adams told me: "You must be mad, he is finished". Six years later, he is still there.'
Defender Tal Ben Haim is also owed a similar amount in wages and Redknapp added: 'In the case of Tal Ben Haim, if players have a contract and are owed money, you can see why they think they should get it. But if the club closes down they won't get a penny. They need to think hard about that.'
Redknapp spent five seasons at Fratton Park in two spells between 2002 and 2008, guiding the club to a momentous FA Cup win in 2008.

'Portsmouth has got to be saved. It's a great club with great traditions,' the 65-year-old continued. 'It would be a disaster if this club went out of business.

'It has great fans to the extent that, if you live in Portsmouth, you are a Portsmouth supporter. If you walk around in that town, you don't see people wearing Manchester United or Arsenal shirts.

'It is soul-destroying to see them in this predicament, and there must be a group of people out there or someone who could take over the club so cheaply and save them.

would love to see someone do that. Surely it cannot happen that Portsmouth go out of business. If someone did come in, the club could be resurrected quickly. It wouldn't take a lot to get it going again.

'I remember when Milan (Mandaric) came in and bought the club all those years ago, they were looking to lock the gates then and go into administration - but he turned it all around and made it work.

'When he sold the club, it spiralled out of control. Balram Chainrai put a lot of money in, but he must think it is the worst investment he ever made in his life. But now it just needs some people who understand football and who can work with the players.'

I want to go back to Arsenal! Legend Henry eyes third spell with Gunners

Thierry Henry expects to return for a third spell at Arsenal - as either a player or coach.

The Gunners' all-time leading goalscorer would welcome another stint at Emirates Stadium, where he spent two months on loan at the start of the year.

Henry, who has 18 months left on his contract with New York Red Bulls, has yet to explore his options with Arsene Wenger but will resume his Arsenal career at some point.

'I would like to go back to England with Arsenal for sure,' Henry is quoted as saying on SkySports.com.

'I wasn't planning to go back to play last season. It was only because Gervinho and (Marouane) Chamakh went to the African Nations Cup.

'I was there to train and they asked me if I wanted to play. Who knows what might happen in the future?

'I've not yet spoken to Arsene about it so I don't know what capacity I could go back in.

'Coaching does interest me but I don't know what my talent is going to be after I have finished my career. But I will go back to Arsenal.'
Henry made his name at Arsenal, overcoming an inauspicious start to his Barclays Premier League career to fire 226 goals in 369 appearances in all competitions.

Last season he agreed a surprise return to north London, scoring twice during a string of cameo appearances.

CHARITY SHIELD CHELSEA 2 MAN CITY 3

MANCHESTER CITY sent a warning to the rest of the Premier League by defeating Chelsea to lift the Community Shield.
Roberto Mancini sent his City troops into battle at Villa Park buoyed by the news that Everton had accepted an undisclosed offer for midfielder Jack Rodwell.

The league champions did not have everyhing their own way in the first half and found themselves trailing to a 40th-minute Fernando Torres strike.

But they were handed an advantage three minutes before the break when Branislav Ivanovic was shown a straight red by referee Kevin Friend.

And City stormed back into the game with second-half goals from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri to move closer to their first Shield triumph since 1972.

Subsititute Ryan Bertrand pulled one back for the Blues 10 minutes from time but there was to be no denying Mancini his first silverware of the season.

Fabrice Muamba: I've been lucky to play football. I thank God I'm alive. I'm blessed
Bolton ace retires over heart fears

MIRACLE man Fabrice Muamba yesterday announced his devastating decision to retire at 24 — but insisted he had been “so lucky” to be able to play football.
The Bolton Wanderers star — struck down with a cardiac arrest on the pitch during an FA Cup game five months ago — had hoped to return to action.

Muamba last week travelled to Belgium for a minor heart operation and sought medical advice from a top cardiologist.

But he was told that professional football would put too much strain on his heart.

He said yesterday: “I have remained utterly positive in the belief I could one day resume my playing career.

“But the news was obviously not what I had hoped it would be and I am now announcing my retirement.

“Football has been my life. I count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level.

“While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for.

“I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me.

“I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, and the Bolton fans.

“I am blessed to have the support of my family and friends at this time.”

Thats very sad but doing the right thing for his health.

And he promised him the chance to form a dream partnership at Manchester United with Wayne Rooney.

Van Persie will travel to Old Trafford today for a medical after agreeing terms of just over £200,000 a week.

As SunSport said on Tuesday, boss Fergie hoped to complete the transfer before the big kick-off this weekend.

Van Persie, 29, who refused to sign a new deal at Arsenal, has been told he will be played at United as an out-and-out striker.

Rooney will operate in a free role behind him.

Fergie had feared Manchester City could still land RVP. City boss Roberto Mancini had insisted that the club were no longer in a position to secure him but United believed this was not the case.

Rooney was also delighted at the news and took to twitter to taunt celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan.

He said: “Arrrr, poor Piers. what’s up now, big man?”

Morgan responded by calling Roo “the No 2 striker at Old Trafford”.

United will pay £15m cash up front with the fee rising to a guaranteed £22m. But, depending on other add-ons, Arsenal could still land £24m.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said: “It’s sad to lose a player of his quality. He had a year left on his deal so we didn’t have the choice.”

When asked if he would spend on new players, Wenger said: “We’ve already recruited to replace him.”

In a club statement, the Gunners said: “Van Persie will travel up to Manchester on Thursday so he can agree terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed transfer.”

A spokesman for United added: “We are pleased to announce we’ve reached agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Robin Van Persie.”

United midfielder Tom Cleverley was told the news after playing in England’s 2-1 win against Italy last night.

And he said: “He’s a great player — he can only make us strong.”
