Re: Footie Thread...................
ENGLAND 2 ITALY 1
JERMAIN DEFOE is England’s most natural finisher since Michael Owen in his heyday.
But he has never been truly appreciated by either his club or his country.
Defoe managed 17 goals last season for Tottenham, despite spending half the time as a sub.
And, here in Berne, he came off his familiar perch on the bench to unleash a rasping winner from the edge of the box 11 minutes from time.
It was Defoe’s 16th England goal in 49 games, yet 32 of those have been substitute appearances.
Who knows what damage he could do if he started a bit more often?
This was a first victory over the Azzurri in 15 years — not that it made up for the penalty shootout defeat in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 back in June.
In the intervening couple of months, England have actually risen to third in the world in the FIFA rankings compared to Italy’s sixth, though nobody takes that lofty position seriously.
That said, manager Roy Hodgson was rightly encouraged by what he saw in front of a spartan crowd on neutral territory in Switzerland.
The Three Lions’ midfield managed to keep the ball so much better than at the Euros.
Captain Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, back from more than two years in self-imposed exile, and debutant Tom Cleverley, who supported striker Andy Carroll, all linked well.
In fact, this game was bad news for Lampard bashers.
Lamps, 34, has been written off again and again.
When he missed the Euros through injury, it seemed the sands of time had caught up with him.
But Hodgson promised Lampard that his England days were not over and his performance last night showed there is plenty of mileage left in the tank.
Meanwhile, both keepers who won their first caps — teenager Jack Butland, who started, and John Ruddy, who came on at half-time — could be satisfied with their efforts.

Tottenham Fans Stabbed In Rome Ahead Of Europa League Match With Lazio
The Huffington Post UK | By Samuel Luckhurst Posted: 22/11/2012 09:36 GMT Updated: 22/11/2012 11:41 GMT
Tottenham Hotspur fans have been stabbed in Rome ahead of the club's Europa League fixture with Lazio this evening.
Ten have been left wounded with two supporters stabbed, one of whom is believed to be critically ill. Ashley Mills and Dave Lesley have been named as suffering serious injuries while Stephen Tierney and Christopher Allen were also injured. The victims were aged between 20 and 60.
Mr Mills is said to have been stabbed and was seriously ill in the city's San Camillo Hospital. Three victims are being treated at the Holy Spirit Hospital and three others at Fatebenefratelli.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported scenes of "urban warfare" erupting in the early hours of this morning shortly after 1am in the Campo de Fiori with up to 100 "Ultras" confronting a band of Spurs fans.
Violence is believed to have erupted at the Drunken Ship pub where Tottenham followers were drinking when Lazio fans arrived armed with knives, baseball bats, belts and knuckle dusters.
Trails of blood could be seen outside the US-owned bar in the aftermath after Lazio fans, some wearing helmets to protect themselves from being identified, stormed the premises.
Tottenham implored supporters to avoid certain areas of the Eternal City which are renowned as hotspots for Ultras.
"If you are making your own way to the Stadium, you should travel to the South side of the Stadium via the Ponte Duca D'Aosta," said the statement. "This is the only bridge that you should use as the home fans will use the Ponte Milvio to reach their side of the Stadium. Italian Police will monitor both bridges closely and have a high attendance in place.
"For your safety and security and to avoid any problems, we recommend that you use the shuttle buses to reach the Stadium."
English supporters have traditionally experienced trouble in Rome before with Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Manchester United and Chelsea fans victims of attacks.
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed they were investigating. Last week the Foreign Office announced just 27 arrests were made among the 100,000-plus army of English club football fans who travelled to 47 Champions League and Europa League matches last season.
Despite a plethora of violent outbursts against English fans in Rome, Uefa rewarded the city the honour of hosting the 2009 Champions League final.

Looking in from the outside, it does appear that Wenger has too much power and there is nobody at the club able to remove him. He can only remove himself and on 7.5m a year for being a failure I guess this won't happen any time soon. Bit like tony blair...he just won't go! Might have to come down to the supporters & mass protests in the end..people power is the only way these days
Didn't one of the Arsenal directors say last week its not the winning but the brand name...just says it all!

Re: Footie Thread...................
things seemed to go downhill when David Dein left the club, he worked well with Wenger,
and he would have fought to keep the good players at Arsenal who have now left, still we are still
doing ok in Premiership and for sure will finish higher than Spurs!

Not with AVB and his "project"! Mind you if there were no injury time in matches we'd be top of the league!
