Football legend Gazza 'close to death'
Star in intensive care after catastrophic reaction to alcohol withdrawal
By RYAN PARRY

SOCCER legend Paul Gascoigne was last night fighting for his life after suffering a catastrophic reaction to alcohol withdrawal.
The frail star is in intensive care after his organs began to shut down in the hours following his arrival at a rehab clinic in the US.
A source close to the star revealed the tragic development last night. He said: “Gazza’s in a bad way. He’s much worse than he was and desperately needs help.
“He’s had really bad withdrawal symptoms relating to not drinking since arriving at the clinic.
"His internal organs are shutting down and he’s in intensive care — it’s a potentially life-threatening situation.
"If he doesn’t receive the best treatment from doctors he could die.”
The source also revealed that Gazza, who is said to be penniless after years of alcohol abuse, could be turfed out of hospital if he cannot foot the bill. The ex-England ace, 45, was taken to a hospital near the Meadows Rehabilitation Centre in Phoenix, Arizona, five days ago.
The source added: “Gazza’s got no money to pay for the treatment and health care in the US is very expensive.
“His life depends on it.”
Gascoigne’s celebrity friends have already raised £25,000 to pay for his stint in rehab.
DJ and TV presenter Chris Evans was among pals shocked by Gazza’s shambolic appearance at a charity bash.
The star sobbed, trembled uncontrollably and unleashed a torrent of swear words in front of dinner guests at a Northampton hotel.
Audience members said the appearance had “the atmosphere of a funeral”. One said: “It was like watching him die in front of our eyes.”
Evans, who enjoyed hellraising nights with Gazza in the 1990s, contacted former England teammate Gary Lineker, TV’s Piers Morgan and ex-England cricketer Ronnie Irani among others.
Between them they raised enough to cover Gazza’s £7,500-a-week stay at the Meadows, while British Airways paid for first-class flights to the US.
Evans said last night: “When I saw the pictures of my old pal last week at a so-called personal appearance, even I was shocked.
Legend ... Gazza in England strip
“I say even I, because I’ve seen him bad before — much worse than you might imagine. Paul has been on the edge for well over a decade now, although admittedly never closer than of late.”
Last week the trembling star was snapped supping a final pint of lager before checking in at the Meadows.
A shocked witness told how Gazza ordered the pint the moment a minder left him briefly alone in a US airport bar.
Moments later his pal returned, grabbed the beer and hauled him out of the boozer.

Re: Footie Thread...................
This is really sad. I was kind of expecting this after last weeks news that going to the States was his last hope
I really hope he will make it through. He was such a talent, the addiction to alcohol destroyed him and there never seemed to be anyone in his life to do the right things to help him, and if anything encouraged him....Very tragic

Re: Footie Thread...................
Yep good luck to Celtic against Juventus
Celtic v Juventus: Can the Hoops make it third time lucky?
Familiarity has been a trait laced through this season's Champions League journey for Celtic.
An exhilarating campaign has seen a Henrik Larsson pilgrimage to Helsingborg in the qualifiers and rematches with old foes in the group stage.
It was therefore no surprise when Juventus were pulled out of the hat for the last 16 tie, setting up a third visit to the east end of Glasgow for the "Bianconeri".
The 2001 clashes between the teams are among the most memorable of European matches in a treasure trove of recent classics.
More than 11 years on, Celtic fans still bristle at the mention of the name Nicola Amoruso.
He was the man who won Juve a dubious late penalty when he crumbled under a challenge from Joos Valgaeren in the final minute of a 3-2 loss.
German referee Hellmut Krug pointed to the spot with Amoruso slotting home himself, much to the disgust of the then-Celtic boss Martin O'Neill who was apoplectic in his post-match interview and the current Parkhead management team of Neil Lennon and Johan Mjallby who were on the pitch that night in Turin.
The 4-3 Chris Sutton-Lubomir Moravcik-inspired victory in the group stage return was stirring but ultimately futile.
The good news for Celtic is Messers Krug and Amoruso have long since retired.
Celtic were 4-3 winners on Juve's last visit to Glasgow
The bad news is the "Vecchia Signora" have recovered from a recent wobble.
Their most recent victims were Fiorentina who visited Juve's shiny new stadium on Saturday evening.
The comfortable 2-0 victory moved them five points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A as they continue their title defence.
Montenegrin Mirko Vucinic opened the scoring with a thunderous shot and strike partner Alessandro Matri added the second before the break, his fifth in five games.
Andrea Pirlo - who has faced the Scottish Premier League leaders before with AC Milan - was imperious again.
The veteran Italy international, who dazzled at Euro 2012, continues to pull the Juve strings following his free agent move in 2011 after a glittering decade with the Rossoneri.
Celtic cannot allow him any space, with one flash of the 33-year-old's boot able to unlock the sturdiest of rearguards.
While he had a quiet second half in particular, Gianluigi Buffon remains an awesome presence in goal, just as he was during that controversial Turin tie in September 2001.
Arturo Vidal provides the industry to compliment Pirlo's craft and the Chilean has been scoring and making goals all season.
Manager Antonio Conte likes to play a three-man defence with two wing-backs, a formation Lennon has experimented with in recent weeks, and that is probably where the biggest selection question mark arises.
Against Fiorentina, it was Andrea Barzagli, Luca Marrone and Federico Peluso along the back with Giorgio Chiellini still out injured.
Vidal is a key player in the middle of the park for Juventus
Another Italian international Leonardo Bonucci will return from a domestic suspension on Tuesday.
Joining Pirlo and Vidal in the middle was the classy Claudio Marchisio, back after a month out.
Vucinic was withdrawn because of a knee injury, but the substitution looked more precautionary.
A big miss for Juve recently has been galloping wing-back Kwadwo Asamoah who has been on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Ghana and, like Celtic's Efe Ambrose, will race to Scotland ahead of the tie.
New loan signing Nicolas Anelka was on the bench but his signing is a stop-gap ahead of the summer arrival of Fernando Llorente from Athletic Bilbao.
Watching the win over Fiorentina was club legend Pavel Nedved, who featured during those 2001 matches and is now a Juventus director.
"I'm fully aware of the atmosphere that awaits us in Glasgow because I've been there and experienced it first hand," he told the club website.
"We'll be stepping into a lion's den and I don't think the team will need geeing up. We'll have to tough it out, but we have shown that we're ready."
Conte's men came through the group stage undefeated with three wins and three draws, including a 3-0 home hammering of holders Chelsea.
Juventus were unbeaten domestically last season with the club fully rehabilitated following the "calciopoli" match fixing scandal of six years ago that saw them stripped of two titles and relegated to Serie B.
Celtic's task is huge, but in Europe this season, that has been a familiar refrain.

Re: Footie Thread...................
Oh dear, poor Anna!
Celtic v Juventus: Neil Lennon angered by 'manhandling'
Celtic manager Neil Lennon was left fuming with the officials following his side's 3-0 defeat by Juventus in their Champions League last-16 first-leg.
The visiting defenders appeared to grapple Celtic players at set-pieces, with Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco refusing to award a penalty.
"They were being manhandled . They were being fouled. It's not rugby we're playing," said Lennon.
“Quite often in Italy we have the bad habit of over-criticising so I will leave it to the Celtic manager to criticise this evening
”
"Are the rules different in Spain or in Italy? On that showing, they must be."
The 41-year-old added: "It looked like the Juventus players were fouling at every opportunity.
"The referee was warned by our players to keep an eye on it and he ignored our requests.
"Every time we went to lose a marker we were being hauled back and the referee was looking straight at it."
However, Juventus manager Antonio Conte stayed away from any controversy when told about Lennon's assessment of the officials.
"Quite often in Italy we have the bad habit of over-criticising so I will leave it to the Celtic manager to criticise this evening," he said.
"Celtic are a good team but we knew this, and there was a fantastic crowd who were like two extra men and that can only drive a team on.
"So it was a difficult match for us, but we kept our heads.
"They played with great intensity but we showed great maturity and overall it was an excellent result for us."
Celtic midfielder Kris Commons was also left bewildered by events as he echoed his manager's comments and called for the officials behind the goal to take more action.
"Gary Hooper was pulled down to the ground on far too many occasions and we got no rewards," said Commons.
"You've got a referee there, a guy behind the goal, a linesman - the whole idea of the official behind the goal is to look out for this sort of stuff.
"If he can't identify when people are being hauled, manhandled, wrestled to the floor, then I don't think he should be in a job.
"He's 10 or 15 yards away and if it was a clear foul, it should have been a penalty.
The Glasgow side slumped to defeat as the Serie A outfit added to an early goal from Alessandro Matri with second-half strikes from Claudio Marchisio and Mirko Vucinic.
Commons revealed the referee warned the Juventus players on several occasions that their grappling may lead to a Celtic spot-kick.
Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and Celtic forward Gary Hooper were booked after a tussle as the former tried to protect keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
"He said if you do it again they'll get a penalty - that was in the first half," Commons said.
"He kept stopping it and booking people and telling people to stop it.
"It clearly had no effect because right up until the 91st minute when we had a corner, it was still going on."
