Re: Footie Thread...................
ARSENE WENGER is finally ready to break the bank to end Arsenal’s eight-year trophy drought.
The Gunners boss has been notoriously reluctant to splash the cash despite the club’s strong finances.
But now former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, Wenger’s best friend in football, says the Frenchman knows it is time to spend — and spend BIG.
Dein said: “The fact is he has to strengthen the team and I know he will do that.
“He is one of the best managers in the world, he’s been coaching for 30 years and knows what he is doing.
“He knows what he wants and it’s just a question of identifying the right talent.”
Arsenal’s last silverware was the 2005 FA Cup, when they beat Manchester United on penalties.
But while United, Chelsea and Manchester City have invested heavily in their squads, Arsenal have been lagging behind.
Dein, though, insists Wenger is still the man to lead Arsenal to more glory, having secured Champions League football in each of his 17 years at the club.
Dein, who brought Wenger to England in 1996, told 5Live Breakfast: “It’s a long, hard season and I am a great supporter of Arsene.
“He has done a phenomenal job and continues to do so year-on-year.
“He has the fire in his belly. I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be there.”
But Dein knows Wenger will have his work cut out against the two Manchester clubs next season, based on this term.
He said: “Arsene’s on course for next season’s Champions League. But they have fallen 20-odd points behind United, which is not good enough.”

Millwall violence caused by two families
Millwall Violence 'Caused By Two Families'
1:48pm UK,
Sunday 14 April 2013
Skirmishes began towards the end of the match
Police have arrested 11 people after violence broke out among
Millwall fans during the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan.
Sources have told Sky that Millwall are investigating the possibility the
fighting could have been triggered by a dispute between two families within the
crowd.
During the second half of their 2-0 loss to Wigan on Saturday, around 20
Millwall fans were involved in a clash behind the goal at Wembley Stadium.
The disturbing scenes, which were witnessed by millions on television, left
some fans bloodied and youngsters in tears.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Investigations into the circumstances of the
incidents are continuing."
Skirmishes started during the second half of
the match
Alex Horne, general secretary of the FA, said: "The Metropolitan Police and
the FA are investigating scenes of sporadic violence and disorder in the
Millwall FC end at the FA Cup semi-final.
"The FA and Wembley Stadium will work with police and representatives of
Millwall FC to review all events.
"We will look to ensure those involved are identified and we would call for
criminal charges and a football banning order to be brought against them.
"The FA deplores the scenes which have taken place, which are unacceptable.
Everything will be done to take action against those involved."
Millwall have long had an unwanted reputation for hooliganism and Saturday's
scenes were a throwback to the 1980s.
The club's chief executive Andy Ambler said it would do all it could to find
those responsible.
"Our position is clear. Anyone associated with our club found guilty of
violent behaviour will be banned indefinitely from Millwall matches in addition
to any punishment they receive from the authorities," he said.
"Having worked so hard to show the positive side of our club both on and off
the field, we cannot allow the actions of a mindless minority to undermine
that.
"At this stage we are still in the process of establishing the full details
of what happened in a section of the ground during the second half.
"When we have those facts at our disposal and the police have completed their
investigations we may be in a position to comment further."
Fans involved could be banned by the
club
Millwall chairman John Berylson, who flew in from the United States for the
game, said: "There are always a few idiots. That's not our fan-base and we don't
even know who those people are. We will be investigating."
And the team's captain Danny Shittu added: "Today was meant to be a good day
out at Wembley. I'm disappointed by it.
"It's sad to hear about these things happening on a day like today. Things
like that shouldn't be going on, It should be a great day for both sides."
Wigan's chairman Dave Whelan, whose team will face Manchester City or Chelsea
in the final next month, said he was appalled by what he saw.
"I can't understand why the Millwall fans would fight each other," he told
the BBC.
"I understand if they want to fall out with the visiting team, but why would
they fall out amongst themselves? It just gives football a very, very poor
reputation."
"We know Millwall are a tough club, their team's tough to play, the
supporters are Millwall Millwall Millwall... straight through. But don't fight
each other."

Newcastle United v Sunderland: fans arrested and three police officers

Although there was no trouble in the ground, Newcastle fans, many of whom had
watched the match in city centre pubs, tried to confront Sunderland’s supporters
as they were escorted by police to Newcastle Central Station to board trains and
metros.
Police dressed in riot gear managed to hold them off during a series of
skirmishes and were pelted with glass bottles as a result. The violence led to
29 arrests, while three officers were injured, one of whom needed hospital
treatment.
An eye witnesses told the Northern Echo: "It was terrifying and
complete chaos. The fans were chucking flares, bits of pavement, rocks, anything
they could get their hands on.
“Wheelie bins were set alight causing the police horses to rear up in fear. I
don't know if anybody has been hurt or not."

"There was also anger among home supporters during the game when a smoke
canister was thrown from the seats above them that were occupied by away fans.
"The most serious incident involved a group of Newcastle fans in Central
Station attempting to confront Sunderland supporters, but they were intercepted
by officers from British Transport Police,” said a Northumbria Police
spokeswoman.
"During this incident missiles were thrown at the officers, which resulted in
three injuries to officers - one of them requiring assessment at hospital."
Police confirmed they received reports of smoke canisters being released
before and during the match. Newcastle fans were also involved in a series of
sporadic incidents of disorder in the city centre following the match, the
spokeswoman added.
The violence is an indication of the volatile nature of this fixture, which
always requires a huge police operation to prevent the two sets of supporters
from clashing, and hints at the pressure Newcastle’s manager, Alan Pardew is now
under.
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio, his trousers ruined by the knee slide
celebration of his team’s second goal, described it as a “beautiful derby” but
this was as ugly as it comes for Newcastle.
“It’s going to affect the rest of our season because to our fans that is
everything,” admitted Pardew.
“It’s not so much about the fans sticking with us, it’s about us making sure
we put performances on between now and the end of the season that will help us
ease the memory of this result.
“It’s not going to go away. We will have to wear it and probably next year as
well, that’s what happens when you lose one of these games. We are under no
illusions of the responsibility we have to our fans, we know what this means to
them and we have let them down. It’s up there with the worst moment I’ve had
here.”
None of that mattered to Di Canio whose celebrations on the touchline, and
again after the game, were typically dramatic. By the time he spoke to the
media, though, the former Swindon Town manager had found a sense of perspective.
“This result doesn’t decide the rest of the season,” he said. “The adrenaline
was pumping on the field, but now we have to think and get our feet back on the
ground. It feels like a massive step, but in the table it is a small step.
“We have to be honest they played Thursday in a very hard game and you could
see after 20 minutes we had the fire and things were going to go our way.
"It’s very important in terms of momentum, but we have to keep that going.”

A bad weekend for football violence with the running battles in the streets of Newcastle, also a nasty pitch invasion in Portsmouth and trouble at the Bradford game that wasn't reported.
Good result last night at last a home win !

Thanks cherry1, What position does Karen Brady hold? She seems quite young to have such responsibility. I remember when it was first mooted that the Stadium was to be for sale there was much speculation about there being over capacity, I doesn't look like the size has been altered but no doubt West Ham supporters will face higher prices to pay for it.

Karen Brady is Vice Chairman, she previously worked at Birmingham City FC under David O'Sullivan, he obviously saw some talent in her, she ended up marrying one of the footballers. Seems an accomplished businesswoman and is one of alan Sugar's sidekicks on the Apprentice programme.

Thanks cherry1, can't get much higher than that can you "Vice Chairman." !! Many years ago I was a West Ham fan, not because I lived anywhere near there, it was in the days of Bobby Moore etc and they were a class Team. Let's hope the fans don't have to pay too much for this costly venture, it's not as if West Ham are in the same league as Arsenal, Man United etc.cherry1 wrote:Hi Panda

Just how far away is the Stadium away from West Ham's ground cherry1? I'm just thinking of the extra cost of getting there. The Fans pay enough as it is with Entrance Fees, 2 strips etc. and money being tight.

Incident
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has received a 10-game ban for
biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a game.
The player's club immediately released a statement saying it was "shocked and
disappointed at the severity" of the Football Association's punishment, decided
by an independent regulatory commission.
An FA statement said: "A three-person independent regulatory commission today
upheld the FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly
insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in
addition to the standard three.
"The suspension begins with immediate effect."
Suarez has until midday on Friday to appeal the additional suspension.
Liverpool's managing director Ian Ayre said in a statement: "Both the club
and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent
Regulatory Commission decision.
"We await the written reasons tomorrow before making any further
comment."
Suarez was banned in 2011 for racist insults
he directed at Patrice Evra
The 26-year-old had issued statements apologising to Ivanovic in the wake of
the 2-2 draw at Liverpool's Anfield. The incident was missed by referee Kevin
Friend but could be seen clearly on television replays.
Suarez was banned for seven matches in 2010 for biting PSV Eindhoven player
Otman Bakkal while playing for Ajax in the Dutch league.
He was also suspended for eight games in December 2011 for racially abusing
Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match.
The player has been repeatedly accused of diving to win penalties and free
kicks, and was criticised after scoring a goal despite a blatant handball in an
FA Cup tie this season against minor league Mansfield Town.
Many commentators have suggested that Suarez will leave English football in
the summer following his latest controversy.
Liverpool are facing their fourth season outside the Champions League next
year and the player recently said: "I am very happy at Liverpool but you never
know in football.
"A player's ambition is always there, the ambition of wanting to play in
elite teams is always there.
"If another team comes around with more prospects of competing in
international club competition games, which is willing to have me, they are
welcome."

Hi Panda
Upton Park would not be that far from Stratford, by car I'd say around 10 mins drive or so, so on train shouldnt be that many stations. Many of the fans come from Essex areas as well as other parts of E.London and for many Stratford will actually be easier to get to than Upton Park.

There is a direct bus route from Stratford to Upton Park but by train requires a change at West Ham. I wonder how many people have got off at West Ham thinking that's the right station for the football ground - my niece did only recently!
Stratford is certainly much easier for transport links now.

Sullivan,Gold and Brady are laughing all the way to the bank again. They have not put any of their own money into it just taken Boris and the London tax payers for mugs.
Stadium is far too good for west ham and when Millwall get to play there we'll soon sort out them removable seats.
