It's hard to define succinctly how it feels to have reached five years without Madeleine. Impossible, heart-breaking, frightening, exasperating, incomprehensible. Sometimes it feels like forever and at other times, just like yesterday.
What is certain though is that since the Metropolitan Police review was commenced last May, the chances of finding Madeleine and discovering what happened are now significantly greater. Additionally, albeit less importantly, our lives and those of our family have been much more bearable over the past year, simply by knowing those stones are finally being turned.
We hope that the investigation will be reopened in Portugal soon, as this will give us the best possible chance of finding Madeleine and the person who committed this crime - of solving the case. The term 'mystery' (commonly used by the media) is not applicable until all possible avenues have been explored. They haven't been, and can't be until the case is reopened.
The age-progression image of Madeleine released last week is an important tool in the search for Madeleine. We believe this image bears a strong resemblance to what Madeleine will look like now. Please help us by distributing this image as far and wide as you can. Someone might just recognise her.
Abducted children have been found many years following their disappearance.
We cannot give up. We won't give up. Please keep looking for Madeleine.
And if you know something, please do the right thing:

OR CRIMESTOPPERS in confidence on 0800 555111; www.crimestoppers-uk.org
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us, comforted us, battled with us, cried and laughed with us over the past five years. We couldn't have made it this far on our own. Your support has been amazing, invaluable and very, very humbling. Thank you.
And now.... the search goes on!

Yes, in almost all cases where a child abduction results in the death of a child, it was at the hands of a parent or person known to the child.
Indeed the majority of child abductions are carried out by a person known to the child or estranged parent.
Is is extremely rare for a child to be abducted from a place of safety, like a school or home.
Despite what the McCanns would like us to believe, it is even rarer for paedophile gangs to abduct a victim. They prefer methods such as internet grooming and again, in the majority of other instances the predator is known to the child.
So,statistically speaking, stranger abduction happening in the manner we are told it happened is off the radar.
Statistics do not prove guilt obviously, but when you consider them in the context of all the other evidence in this case, or indeed lack of evidence in this case, well it would seem Madeleine's abduction could well be one of a kind.

Just read some of the comments on there. Full of "baby girl" and "little birdie". And "the Portuguese police are useless and they are hiding something."
Makes me want to vomit.

Almost reads as though Mr Gerry is trying to invoke some sort of authority here.
If it’s not a mystery then I do wish he’d tell us how and when exactly she went missing, all the details and facts.. Oh and Mr Gerry, isn’t an unsolved crime seen as mystery, or are you just playing semantics here?

Semantics? No! Gerry talked about people "purporting a theory." To purport is an intransitive verb: it doesn't take a direct object. So, someone could purport to be, for example, a person with a command of the English language, but they couldn't purport a theory! I think Gerry just doesn't have much idea of the sense of what comes from his mouth!

Thank you.
For a supposedly well-educated man, Gerry often comes across as someone who can't string two related sentences together in good English.

He clearly hasn't thought this through at all. If we are all to be sued for stating that it is a mystery, then the alternative is that it's not a mystery. Ergo, they know exactly what happened!

My favourite "transformation" was Father Jack. IRL he comes across as cultured, refined, beautifully groomed and turned out and a real gent. The polar opposite of his character, in fact - it really is quite startling.

Aya, a man of action and few words. "Sometimes Ah Wunder." And then there was the joke about him: woman opens her front door to Taggart, who doesn't mince his words in favour of softening the blow. He just says, "Mrs MacDonald, yer husbands been Murrrdurred!"
