The fact that these are "NEW" visitors indicates that the Sun article has generated a lot of further interest among people who might have in the past been skeptical of the McCanns' involvement. Seeing the claims spelled out for them has probably made them think, "Yes, I've always thought there is something not quite right about that 'abduction' story".

I wonder if Antonella at The Sun is beginning to realise what a prize ninny she's been!

It really is good to see the coverage there has been of the hearing, especially when considering there was little, if any, on previous occasions.

Just wait all these two bit jurnos will be flipping the record over and claiming they were only playing devils advocate by what they had written and only pretending to be supportive as a means of trying to get closer to the truth.

Thanks Anna. SH sounds like she's being rather vague. 'Everyone in Portugal believes the book'.... becomes 'well, a Portuguese nurse I know in Canada believes the book'.

David Trickey -- the psychologist who has been helping the McCanns' two other children, twins Sean and Amelie, since 2007 -- told the court he was concerned that they would one day be able to read Amaral's book.

I'd be a bloody sight more concerned about them reading page 129 of their mother's book.

Iv'e been saying all along that Amaral was only repeating one of the the Final Report findings....that Madeleine died in 5a.

A very timely compilation of the blatant obfuscation and lies we have seen over the years from the gruesome twosome and co.  I pray that the McCanns lose their libel case against Goncalo Amaral, and that the world will finally come to see this grotesque pair for the selfish, unsavory characters they truly are.

The letter on facebook from a Portugese citizen to Duarte will have been read by millions, maybe with just cause. !!!

Twice, Duarte showed her lack of knowledge about what she is defending, she could barely remember Amelie's name and when asked what compensation is being demanded her reply was "Duarte: 250 thousand euros for each of the persons involved, they are five."

This is a glaring error, originally the Mcanns sued for Madeleine as well but had to remove her name because a) Madeleine is a Ward of Court and
b) No one knows whether she is alive or dead.

But we have the politicians to reckon with. It is not in the UK’s interest to have this trial go ahead. A successful outcome for Goncalo will mean the UK, almost from the very start, was wrong to ridicule the PJ and insist that the ‘abduction’ was the only possible explanation of Madeleine’s disappearance – despite there being no evidence to validate that explanation. Top-level politicians will be seen to have interfered to, in effect, protect the parents and so obstruct the course of justice.

I didn't think the trial would even take place. But it has started at least. However, I don't think Goncalo Amaral will be allowed to speak freely or call witnesses. Last time a witness wasn't allowed even to be called. This free speech lark seems to be very one sided in a lot of cases. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing is adjourned indefinitely or until SY come up with their solution to the case. Which again after all will remain a theory until somebody is prosecuted and found guilty.

Hi MaryB, I agree....when you have two ex Prime Ministers, an incumbent one wasting £5 million of public money , they will not want to lose face. I know Portugal and Britain have been friends for many years but I think the Portugese will be proved right for not re-opening the case and with all the money they too have spent they will be quite happy to take this case to Trial.

I hope Amaral's lawyers ask why the first set of the Fund accounts (may 2007-march 2008) which were the only set of accounts which gave detail, showed that only 13% of the very big income in that period was spent on SEARCHING.

Amaral's book was published 3 months after the end of that accounting period. they weren't searching as those accounts showed. And it's not my job to look for her! they were the ones who (they claim) left the three children home alone in an unlocked apartment.

And the lawyers should ask what % of the income in subsequent accounting years was spent on searching. the later accounts gave no detail presumably because of the unfavourable comments on the 13% in period 1? perhaps they could also present that independent accountants report on the audited accounts to the court?

I'd love to think so James but I don't think the accounts will come into it. The McCanns claim Amarals' Book and Video suggesting Madeleiene died in 5a.
He can cite that as one of the 4 theories the Portugese Judiciary gave when they shelved the case. However, there is no tangible proof that Madeleine IS dead so the Mccanns will say they are still searching and Amaral's book and video has hindered the search. Amaral's Lawyer will  point to all the sightings around the World since the Book was published as proof the search has not been impeded. His Lawyer will also point out that since the Book is not Published in English , the only reference to it and the CD is on YouTube and the twins would hardly at 4 yrs of age be able to surf the net to find it when it was first shown, I don't know if it is available still....I doubt it.

I think Kate reminding them of Madeleine in that MENTORN  film 2 yrs later and telling us she has kept Madeleine's room intact is far more harmful because they were only 2 when Madeleine went missing.

Is this libel trial in front of a jury, or is it being heard by solely the judge (does anyone know?)

Also, I thought it was up to the jury/judge to decide on damages (if the defendant is found guilty) and not the plaintiff, so I'm confused by the reports that the McC's are suing Mr Amaral for £1m.

Usually, but not always, it is in front of three judges. As for the damages, no idea.

Well it is the McCanns so no doubt they set the rules !

Of course, Gonçalo Amaral is allowed to call up witnesses, it is a court of law. How else would he defend himself? Also, if he wishes he can make a statement to the court at the end of the trial. In Portugal, people do have rights and dearly fought for them after suffering a fascist regime for 48 years.
