Madeleine McCann
The CPS has sent an International Letter of Request to Portuguese police seeking permission to make the first arrests in the hunt of Madeleine McCann, the Mirror reports.
A spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann said the letter was "significant" but they were not building their hopes up. The spokesman told the Mirror:
The letter is a significant development. It is necessary for British police to request the Portuguese authorities allow them to operate on their turf.
It means they have the intention of arresting and interviewing X, Y or Z. We don’t know who they have their sights on but it’s likely it is the burglars.
Whether the Portuguese will co-operate remains to be seen. It is a very sensitive issue with differences they have had.
Police want to be given a chance to arrest key suspects. It doesn’t prove they have Madeleine but it will rule them in or out of the investigation and that is important.
Kate and Gerry don’t want to build up their hopes too high but they realise it could be a significant new lead.

The Crown Prosecution Service has sent an International Letter of Request to Portuguese police seeking permission to arrest the trio
Arrests: Madeleine McCann Arrests: Madeleine McCann
PA / BBC
British police are poised to make the first arrests in the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann.
The Met want to quiz three burglars who carried out raids in the Portuguese resort when the three-year-old vanished.
Officers were last night preparing to fly to the Algarve to make their first arrests since the force set up Operation Grange in 2011 to review the kidnapping.
They hope to speak to the thieves after mobile phone records showed the men made numerous calls to each other in the hours after she disappeared.
The Crown Prosecution Service has sent an International Letter of Request to Portuguese police seeking permission to arrest the trio.
A spokesman for Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry said: “The letter is a significant development. It is necessary for British police to request the Portuguese authorities allow them to operate on their turf.
"It means they have the intention of arresting and interviewing X, Y or Z. We don’t know who they have their sights on but it’s likely it is the burglars.
“Whether the Portuguese will co-operate remains to be seen. It is a very sensitive issue with differences they have had.
“Police want to be given a chance to arrest key suspects. It doesn’t prove they have Madeleine but it will rule them in or out of the investigation and that is important.
"Kate and Gerry don’t want to build up their hopes too high but they realise it could be a significant new lead.”
Days before Madeleine’s disappearance from Praia da Luz in May 2007 aged three, the gang raided another holiday flat there, disturbing a child. The youngster’s parents interrupted the burglars who fled.
An inquiry source said: “Portuguese police attached no significance to the burglary at the time. British officers regard this as an oversight.”
Met Police have so far been unable to arrest the men as their Portuguese counterparts are reluctant to carry out a joint investigation, instead preferring to follow their own lines of inquiry.
Diplomatic discussions are going on to try to secure agreement for UK detectives to be based in Portugal. Six local officers are working with the Met’s team, making enquiries on their behalf.
The latest development follows a first International Letter of Request allowing Operation Grange to access mobile phone data.
Scotland Yard said: “We can confirm a second International Letter of Request has been sent to the Portuguese authorities by the Crown Prosecution Services.”
No formal arrests have ever been made in the hunt for Madeleine. Early on former GP Kate and heart doctor Gerry, both 45 and from Rothley, Leics, were given the status of arguido. It meant they were formal suspects but they were cleared in 2008.
British-born property consultant Robert Murat was also made an arguido but he was exonerated alongside the McCanns.
Operation Grange has 37 officers and has so far cost taxpayers £4.5million.
In October, a BBC Crimewatch special, featuring a reconstruction and an e-fit of a new prime suspect, sparked 3,500 calls and emails. Two viewers gave the same name for the man seen carrying a child.

Parents at home with their child to protect him against intruders? How strange! Probably antisocial people without friends to go outside with.

Re: Madeleine McCann police 'hoping to make first arrests'
"In a moving radio interview recently, former GP Mrs McCann, 45, said: “Six years ago my little girl Madeleine was stolen. I cannot describe the impact that awful night had on our family. It’s a horrible pain we live with every day.
“[The charity] Missing People call it living in limbo and until Madeleine is found, we are in this nightmarish limbo too."
It must have been so hard on you Kate that you couldn't summon up the will to search for Madeleine could you . Gerry, you too must have been so grief stricken that you could barely make the effort to set up the Fund in record time with all the Directors appointed and setting up a supplier for Merchandise to be sold......I really don't know how both of you managed to be so cheerful outside the Church on Madeleine's birthday 12 days later.

Re: Madeleine McCann police 'hoping to make first arrests'
'THREE burglars have been identified by Scotland Yard as POTENTIAL MAJOR SUSPECTS in the hunt for Madeleine McCann'
That is what the Daily Express website is now reading. Everyone in PDL the day Madeleine disappeared is a potential suspect! I guess the 'major' is because they phoned each other. The Met will NOT have the content of the calls, only the location, roughly, from where the calls were made. Unless these 'burglars' were detailed by people closer in to remove MBM this is twaddle. However, more worryingly it could be the case's 'Barry George moment' with the phone calls playing the part of the minute speck of gunshot residue said to have been found in one of his coat pockets in the Jill Dando murder case.

kitti it could be superman - or - invisable man - or even bionic man - one to scale walls - one not to be seen and the other to be able to run fast - this could be on the par with these fairy tales

Re: Madeleine McCann police 'hoping to make first arrests'
YES! That was what I was going to put up Iris... but I got carried away and was more long winded.
I don't think they would dare arrest 'burglars' for this crime without evidence, surely? Would they? It would be far too risky a strategy. I mean, there would have to be a trial and all... not just a 'declaration' as with a dead paedophile. Let us hope the three burglars do not have an unfortunate fatal car accident and so become more convenient as suspects. Also, arrested means someone is in custody. If they are not in custody, surely these characters will leg it over the border. Perhaps they ARE already arrested and in custody, and are going to have this massive new charge added to the thieving one.
If all of the tabloids are at it, there must be something happeneing... or maybe not. What IS happening is the end of the libel trial. When will we know the new date for the summing up? Surely the judge can run together the summing up and the verdict. She has had a helluva lot of thinking time already.

Hi comparedna, I think it is the Press extracting the urine, or SY trying to get one over on OPORTO .

Burglers steal items, strange that they didn´t steal any items from the Mccanns. Evidently SY are now trying to :fit up: someone else to keep Lord and Lady McCann happy.

It is more likely that those 'burglars' are witnesses. And not suspects.

Somewhere further up this thread I read, amongst other interesting comments I agreed with, the gem of news that the poster had rung the Met Press Office and spoken to a named bloke there, who said there was no SY press release, and that the press information had come from 'McCann spokesmen'. Why am I not surprised?

Interesting career move. Burglars who diversify to kidnapping. I suppose the next thing we hear is that kidnappers are into house clearance when they operate.

Danny Shaw @DannyShawBBC 11m
#Madeleine No official word on what's in the international letter request to Portuguese, but perhaps not as straightforward as reported
Danny Shaw @DannyShawBBC 9m
#Madeleine..however, theory Madeleine was snatched by burglars during bungled break-in remains key to Met inquiry as are other possibilities
Well I hope this is right and they are keeping an open mind.

Crikey....shows how desperate they are, Clarence must be scraping the Barrel trying to introduce more evidence to prove Madeleine could be alive . This of course to help the Judge make a decision against Amaral that Madeleine died in the Apartment when the Trial resumes. Why doesn't SY stop this nonsense, it is doing their reputation no good.
