I would be interested to know the definition of "shortly before" as referred to by the Express. With spin, that timescale could be ten years.

Widowan - perhaps the PJ are not playing ball and have already eliminated this group of men from their own enquiries and have told SY to waste their own time, not theirs.

How could you be buoyed by knowing that your child was kidnapped in a panic? What would the burglars do then? In a panic, with a £M reward for anyone who saw them with her? Take her home and care for her until she was old enough for college?

The more likely case in that scenario is that one or more broke in, she woke up and screamed or started crying and they panicked and smothered her - and took the body so it would look like a kidnapping or woke and wander situation, leaving the good items behind so no one would suspect it was the local burglars...

What would become of Madeleine then - she'd be dead and likely buried somewhere right near as Pat Brown has said all along, dead within the hour or even in the apt then disposed of.

Or they took her although how that prevents them being caught I do not know, a kicking screaming kid - and killed her rather than have someone find her with them and accuse them for the reward money - turn them in. No good buoying outcome attaches to this scenario.

That's possible too. They had already looked at Tannerman - the tourist - and ruled him out and did not seem to feel the need to run keep Gerry and Kate appraised of that - after all, cooperation goes both ways. I am not going to cooperate with my suspects in a shelved case I am going to allow them to stupidly flog Tanner man and give them rope to hang themselves, knowing that the person Jane saw wasn't the abductor and they are just lying about this.

Maybe they decided not to arrest the burglars because they didn't burgle anything so there was nothing to arrest them for - and didn't have anything to do with Madeleine disappearing?

Still they'd be good witnesses but as with your "shortly before" time, I question how "near" they were to PDL and WHEN all these calls were made. Were they in the same town but not near apt 5a? I wonder how many calls constitutes "many " and most of all I wonder whether the T( phone records are being looked at.

Are they really going to be arrested - or are they going to be questioned? it's an obvious move to question people around the site of the crime when it happened. Why is so much money being spent on one case, when there are so many missing children? I just can't understand this.

Looked better at the football match. I guess when they are posing for maddie related photos they have to look serious, otherwise there's the general hilarity they enjoy when they think they aren't being photographed

(Reuters) - British police investigating the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal want to speak to three men they believe were carrying out burglaries at the time of the girl's disappearance, the Daily Mirror reported on Monday.

According to the tabloid, police were preparing to travel to Portugal to make the first arrests since British officers started to review the case in 2011.

Madeleine went missing aged three from her room at the Praia da Luz holiday resort in the Algarve in May 2007 while her parents were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant, leading to a global search that gripped the world's media.

The police have since found mobile phone records which showed the three men in question made numerous calls to each other in the hours after the three-year-old disappeared, the mass-selling newspaper said.

Britain's prosecution service has sent an International Letter of Request to Portuguese police seeking permission to arrest the trio, the paper added.

A spokesman for the police confirmed that a letter had been sent to the Portuguese authorities, but declined to comment on the contents of the letter.

"We can confirm a second International Letter of Request has been sent to the Portuguese authorities," the spokesman said.

Despite huge international interest and numerous reported sightings from Belgium and Spain to Morocco, France and Malta, and investigations stretching as far away as Australia, the girl's fate remains a mystery.

Her parents were named as official suspects by Portuguese police four months after Madeleine's disappearance, but in 2008 they were cleared and Portugal's public prosecutor later dropped the case, citing a lack of evidence.

London police launched a review of the case in 2011 and began their own investigation in July last year.

Yes, that is what USA Today also printed here. That the spokesperson overstated the case. These are three people suspected of burglaring and not imminent arrests of suspects. So at least some press and media are not being muzzled.

It is now known that between January and May 2007 there had been a four-fold increase in the number of burglaries in the area around the Praia da Luz resort where the family from Rothley, Leicestershire, was staying.

Police said in October that in the 17 days before she disappeared there was one burglary and one attempted burglary in the block where the McCann family were staying.

So if these geezers are not known for being burglars (as their main occupation), then they could be absolutely anybody!
They might be suspiciously hanging round premises for nefarious purposes in their spare time.

The burglar rubbish is pure spin. Good old Clarrie getting us all to look in that direction. Why ? Why the distraction tactics now ?

I believe SY have sent a letter. That's where the truth begins and ends.

Team McCann made a big noise about not commenting on the investigation. Now we have a lot more than a we are very happy comment. We have a full blown finger pointing accusation. Why ?

Something is up with this, it's out of character even for Clarrie. Either he is trying to distract us or trying to warn somebody else. That's what I think - there's an ill wind blowing in the direction of Rothley that has them flapping.

Conservatives are meant to be fiscally conservative and yet he has aided and abetted and forced this £10M waste of taxpayers' money since the get go. Is he running on the fact that his face is now well known, for making spin type comments with a lugubrious expression, about a case that has been so costly and so divisive and resulted in nothing? Nothing except damaged relationship with another nation, and encouraging defense lawyers for child neglectors to cite his clients case as a good reason why they too should walk free?

I really don't see him in Parliament.

It was amusing to watch the progress of the 'news' about the supposed impending arrests in the McCann case on Sky rolling news. Around 6pm on Monday it was the first item of the news, with a big picture of Madeleine whilst the headlines were playing... It was still big news around 10pm, but throughout the rest of the late evening and in the small hours it went down and down the list. Brunty came on taking the wind out of the story's sails with a lot of possiblys and maybes, and about the need for these men to be 'interviewed' rather than 'arrested', and soon it was about their need to be eliminated from inquiries! Clearly though the Met has some names for these Portuguese 'burglars' or burglarly suspects; they are not in custody, and not likely to be with all this hoo-hah beforehand. Ridiculous! It simply must be pink spin. It does the Met no favours at all. It just makes them look silly. Can't the SY request that Team McCann shut up? The most these persons are likely to be is witnesses, and perhaps not even that. By yesterday morning when Eammon Holmes started up at 6am on Sunrise the topic had gone completely.

These stories are about as believable as the ones by the 'investigators' who said they'd hoped to have Madeleine home by Christmas. It's a poor show that the papers are giving this story any weight at all since there doesn't seem to be any facts to back it up.
