Trinity Leigh Bates - found dead
Police have found the body of a young girl abducted from a home in the Queensland city of Bundaberg.
The nine-year-old disappeared from her home last night or early this morning.
She was reported missing by her father about 5.44am and her body was found a short time later in a pipe that ran off a storm drain, police said.
Police are due to release further details this afternoon.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh told reporters in Brisbane she felt for the family.
‘‘Our hearts go out to the family of this little girl and this is a very, very sad incident,’’ she said.

Police find abducted girl dead in drain

Police have found the body of a young girl abducted from a home in the Queensland city of Bundaberg.
The eight-year-old's parents had put her to bed on Sunday night and she was not there on Monday morning.
"Early indications are it's a possible break and enter at that premises," Detective Superintendent Maurice Carless told a media conference in Bundaberg on Monday.
The girl was reported missing by her father around 5.44am (AEST) and her body was found a short time later in a pipe that ran off a storm drain near her home, police said.
"We're certainly treating it as a murder," Det Supt Maurice Carless said.
"This is a very difficult time for the family."
A baby was also in the house when the girl went missing.
Earlier Queensland Premier Anna Bligh told reporters that she felt for the family.
"Our hearts go out to the family of this little girl and this is a very, very sad incident," she said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In Brisbane, Premier Anna Bligh told reporters she felt for the family.

Det Supt Carless said there was also a baby in the house where the girl disappeared from, but the baby had not been harmed.
Earlier, police looking for the girl established crime scenes at two homes while they searched a network of drains in the Queensland city of Bundaberg.
Officers sealed off two homes and investigators ventured inside a nearby drain system.
Police confirmed the abduction to AAP, but would not release further details until a senior officer addressed the media at 3pm.
News reports say the eight-year-old disappeared following a break in at her home overnight.
Bundaberg's News Mail said the girl's parents woke on Monday to find her missing, and that the abduction followed a break and enter at the home.
Police were door-knocking local homes and businesses, and had cordoned off drains that run under Walker Street, the News Mail said.
A house in Walker Street was cordoned off.
Detective Superintendent Maurice Carless held a press conference in Bundaberg at 3pm.

Re: Trinity Leigh Bates - found dead
How awful for this little girl. It's terrible though, but since the McCanns I can't help feeling really sceptical about children who are allegedly snatched from their beds. Maybe she just got up in the night and wandered off. Perhaps, the parents hurt her and then claimed an abduction had occurred. Were there signs of a break-in ?
Sorry, if I'm wrong I'll feel bad about being so mistrusting , but, since the McCanns, I can't help it.
Carly by the way.

We should always be sceptical and parents should be considered the prime suspects. It is up to the parents now to rule themselves out of the investigation by taking polygraphs, answering all police questions and doing everything within their means to cooperate with the investigation. Their actions will speak volumes about their guilt or innocence.

If there was a break-in, why didn't the parents hear anything? Faking a break-in wouldn't be very difficult, would it? However, in this case the poor little girl's body is available for autopsy and may reveal what happened.

I actually think that an abductor would be more likely than a family member to dump the body so close to home.

Me too. I read about this kind of case now and I'm immediately suspicious. The McCann affect. Sad!
Re: Trinity Leigh Bates - found dead
You could be right, but maybe they didn't want to take the car out and risk being seen in the middle of the night. however, I mustn't speculate too much. the poor family may be completely innocent. However, it is VERY rare for a child to be taken from her home..It sounds terrible, but maybe the McCanns have given people ideas.

I do hope her parents were not involved, but I am so cynical these days. From the McCanns - a break-in: from the Aisling Symes case, quick, where do we put the body? In the drain!
Re: Trinity Leigh Bates - found dead
That poor family.
I understand people being suspicious, its "The Mccann Effect" isnt it?
However, there are at the very least proper signs of a break in here, I believe so I am coming down on the side of the family here until proven otherwise. If there had been proper signs of a break in at PDL then its possible none of us would be here now.
My heart goes out to them.

I'm not making light of it,but, like someone said previously, the Mccanns have put a whole new light on child abduction. We will be very sceptical now about any other missing child, abducted or not!

Murdered girl's family plead for help
By Steve Gray, AAP February 23, 2010, 3:43 pm
The grandmother of a Bundaberg schoolgirl murdered and left in a drain believes someone in the small city holds the key to finding her killer.
Police on Tuesday named the victim as eight-year-old Trinity Leigh Bates, known to her family as Trinny.
They also released a photo of the pretty, olive-skinned girl with light brown hair and dark eyes found dead in a drain near her Walker Street home on Monday morning.
She was reported missing by her father after an apparent break-and-enter at the house.
Detective Superintendent Maurice Carless, a lead investigator on the case, refused to tell reporters in Bundaberg if anyone was in custody for the murder.
He would only say that a number of people had been, or were being, spoken to by police.
Investigators were pleased with the progress so far, including the level of co-operation from the community, Det Supt Carless said.
Earlier, The Courier-Mail said a man aged in his 20s, and known to the girl's family, was being questioned but police would not say if he was a suspect.
Grandmother Kerry Hanlon said in an interview taped by police media on Tuesday that someone in Bundaberg must know something about what happened to the girl she calls Trin.
"Somebody out there knows something," she said.
"Somebody has to tell somebody something. She (Trinity) needs to have this all settled. Somebody's got to help find the person responsible for this."
She said Trin enjoyed singing, dancing, school and swimming.
"She was a beautiful, happy, loved and loving little girl," Ms Hanlon said.
Family members were gathering together during their time of grief and wanted anyone with information about the case to come forward.
It is understood Trinity attended a small school near Bundaberg.
Shocked Bundaberg residents have begun to lay floral tributes near the site where the girl's body was found.
"Sleep in peace little angel. RIP beautiful girl. We never knew you or your family but our thoughts are with you. XXX May you dance with the angels," read one card.
Online tributes are also flowing for the slain girl on Facebook, but police have been forced to act after sexually explicit messages and other content was posted on tribute pages.
It's the second such case in a week. Last Monday, police acted to have pornography and other offensive content wiped from Facebook tribute pages for Elliott Fletcher, 12, who was stabbed to death at a Brisbane school.
Police say they are trying to find those responsible and will prosecute them if any laws had been broken.
