This dreadful story is headline news in Australia and now it seems neighbours heard dogs barking and other noises. The all did nothing and are now feeling very bad indeed. Strange that the parents didn't hear the noise too. Several people are helping with information re this case. The people of Bundaberg are now living in fear.

my best friend, 14 y.o, is this poor little girl's aunty, we live in perth. My friend is a tomboy and i never ever see her cry, but talking about this made her burst into tears. she cried herself to sleep last night. i cant help but feel for her. it really frustrates me when people suspect the family, because i know my friend and anyone related to her could never do anything like that. please just listen to what you're saying before you suggest such horrific things. my heart really goes out to poor trinity, as well as her whole family. its just amazing to see that something on one side of the country can have such massive repucussions all the way on the other side.

RIP little Trinity Bates, my heart goes out to you.

It's standard procedure to suspect the family and eliminate them as soon as possible. Nothing unusual in that. Signs of a break in can be investigated to confirm whether it was the work of a third party or not. This can be a significant advantage when working to eliminate the parents. It's when people say there has been a break in but no signs of one can be found to be investigated that suspicions are aroused.

I know what you mean and i can understand the thought behind it when you put it like that. just quite often, its not put quite so nicely, which is when it can be hard to hear and often taken personally by family and friends. thanks for clearing that up though :)

im really upset about this and have been crying maybe fear about the dentist tommrow too lol but this has really upset me children are so precious and people do this to them maddie will have a friend in heaven no to play with......

The family are not suspected. They will suffer for the rest of their lives as they didn't hear anything like the neighbours did. They will always wonder why they didn't hear anything amiss in the house too. Looks like some offenders in the area have done this and the police are closing in.

Police charge man over Bundaberg girl's death

Police have charged a Bundaberg man with murder over the death of an 8-year-old girl whose body was found on Monday.

The 20-year-old is currently in police custody and will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police thanked the media, the community and the State Emergency Service for their assistance in the investigation so far.

Trinity Leigh Bates' body was found in a drain near her Bundaberg home after she was abducted from her home the previous night.

She was reported missing by her father after an apparent break-and-enter at the house.

Thank you, Lilemor. That was quick and I guess the police must be quite confident to charge the man. I just feel stunned that someone could do such sick and perverted things to a small child and her family. Rest in peace Trinity.

Cinderella, I know, it's hard to imagine anyone you know being in any way connected to something like that and thankfully now that the police have made an arrest it looks in this case as though the family are totally in the clear. TBH, I'd hate to be in the police and have to interrogate family members when something like this happens, but it's part of their job and has to be done. :(

My heart goes out to this little girl's family and friends - what a sad loss and what a terrible way to lose a child. Poor little Trinity, I hope she didn't suffer. Honestly, while I'm usually not in favour of the death penalty it's when something like this happens that I find myself thinking that maybe it was some sort of deterrent. I hope when someone is eventually found guilty he spends the rest of his days in prison and is never allowed out.

What a difference in co-operation levels though. Or am I wrong in thinking maybe Maddie's case would be solved by now if so many of the parties involved were not so keen to protect themselves rather than a child.

That poor family - my heart goes out to them. The only good thing (not that anything about it is good) is there has been quick resolution.

Glad they got him! Bundaberg residents can breathe a sigh of relief for a while, but the whole town has changed forever regards its safety record.

This is so awful. Again, the answer in 99% of cases of this type lies close to home. I am therefore not surprised its a family friend. Therefore, in the circumstances, it will be interesting to see if the McCann's send a message to them.

I've just read that the police were interested in this man soon after Trinity was reported missing.

We should always be sceptical and parents should be considered the prime suspects. It is up to the parents now to rule themselves out of the investigation by taking polygraphs, answering all police questions and doing everything within their means to cooperate with the investigation. Their actions will speak volumes about their guilt or innocence.

I disagree with this comment. Just because the Mccanns were made arguido's does not make every parent of a missing child automatically responsible for their childs disappearance. I've spoken to many parents of missing kids and it is unfair to tag every parent with the same stick. If you looked more into other missing persons cases you might see the difference. Not all parents neglect their children and leave them wide open to be taken.

There is an angry group waiting for this person to appear at courthouse. A family friend! One wonders just what has been going on re this case. The little girl didn't make a sound apparently. Feel for the people who heards sounds and didn't ring the police. Will they ever get over this.

Antoinette, you completely misinterpreted what I wrote. I absolutely did not say that "every parent of a missing child (is) automatically responsible for their child's disappearance." That is a huge stretch of the imagination. I am just saying that it is standard procedure for the parents to be ruled out as suspects (as noted by the NPIA's leading criminal profiler Lee Rainbow), which can be done quickly and easily for innocent parents.

There is nothing wrong with being sceptical. I did not imply that the parents are guilty, nor did I even suggest anything that they might have done to their child. In fact, when I first heard the child was found in a drain close to the home, I immediately thought it was likely an abductor - see my other post.
