NO to Neglect............PETITION
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/no-to-neglect/
More and more children aged under 12 are being left on their own at home by their parents without proper supervision. The law on this point is totally unclear and appears to be covered only by the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act. The topic of young children being left on their own has been in the news in the past year and it is submitted that now is a good time to review existing laws. The dangers to young children of being left on their own are numerous and potentially very serious. The law should deter people with children under 12 from even thinking about leaving them on their own.
After this story in The Daily Mail it highlights just how urgently this is needed so please sign it as soon as soon as you have a moment!!!

Re: NO to Neglect............PETITION
The NSPCC has guidance documents on leaving children alone. You're right, there is no age stated but it is an offence to leave a child alone if the child is put at risk. There should be an age stated, i think 14 is ok for daytime hours but i don't think children should be left alone during the night until they are 16.

Great link that one!
If you do leave a child alone, remember:
*
If possible, leave a telephone number where you can be contacted, and be available to answer it immediately.
*
Talk to your child about keeping safe at home and point out the potential dangers. Tell them not to answer the door to strangers.
*
Give clear instructions about what to do if there's an emergency . All children left alone should be able to phone the emergency services.
*
Leave a list of trusted people they can contact.
*
Put obvious dangers out of reach of children, eg medicines, chemicals, matches , etc.
*
Make sure that the child is happy about the arrangements and confident about being left .
*
Tell the child when you'll be back, and make sure you're back on time.
*
Talk to him or her about it afterwards .

Better ask the McCanns. They are the ones who speak to the PM on the phone...

That is as it should be in a time of unprecedented crisis, butI don't believe it was them asking for 500 signatures though.
Really? Had no idea that everyone in trouble in the UK spoke to the PM on the phone. Must be a civilised country thing...
Couldn't agree more about the 'unprecedented crisis' thing, though. In fact, I think it may be one of the best terms used to describe the situation...
Dinner time.
Re: NO to Neglect............PETITION
I believe the petition got a lot more than 500 signatures.

No they did not ask for signatures, they asked for envelopes with money (sorry it is not them, it was Mr Mitchell who asked)

What will happen to my petition once it is finished?
Once your petition has closed, usually provided there are 500 signatures or more, it will be passed to officials who work for the Prime Minister in Downing Street, or sent to the relevant Government department for a response.
Every person who signs such a petition will receive an email detailing the Government's response to the issues raised.

I concur,that's a valid observation String.

But no response from the PM? Must be more pressing things to attend to I suppose.
Yeah like sending more of your sons and daughters home in a box from Afghanistan.

You really can't get a better response than that. :)
I would hope that other people are never in such dire straits that there would even be the need to be talking to a PM on the phone.
Only very 'special' people speak to the PM on the phone. No matter what 'trouble' they are in. Ask all your countrymen and countrywomen who had problems abroad and who had trouble even talking on the phone to people at embassies...
Why hasn't the Prime Minister replied yet to the petition calling for a review of police actions in the Madeleine case?
Here's a simple thing that many of us can do to try to force an early reply to the petition launched early in 2009 calling on Gordon Brown to order a review of the actions of Leicestershire and other British police in the Madeleine McCann investigation.
The petition got 631 signatures, well over the 500 limit whereby the Prime Minister has undertaken to post a reply to the petition demand.
The original demand of the petition was:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to order a review into the role of British police in relation to the Portuguese inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Here's a suggested form of words:
Dear Prime Minister,
On 30 July a petition closed - http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Britpolicereview/ - asking for an enquiry into the British police investigation into what really happened to Madeleine McCann. 631 people signed it, well over the 500 figure which means you have promised a reply. Could we please see your reply as soon as possible?
The addresses to write to are either:
number10@petitions.pm.gov.uk or
WebMaster@pmo.gov.uk
A string of those arriving in the PM's inbox should mean we get a reply sooner rather than later.
