What a tragedy NBY.....what does he do to save his children? Not run upstairs to their bedrooms and guide them down, get a ladder and try and break the Window" If they were woken by the Fire alarm they must have been sleeping downstairs !! Once the Alarm went off, surely the smoke would have woken the children as well.?

I was saddened to read that when the body of the youngest child, Jayden aged 5, was removed from the scene, he was still wearing his school uniform. The fire happened at 3 am, those children were certainly neglected poor mites

Oh , that's dreadful chrissie......to be honest though , the Parents don't look as if they would qualify to appear on Mastermind and their lifestyle is very strange. Wouldn't your first instinct be to run upstaris to try to save your children instead of finding a ladder to climb? Funny how they both survived don't you think?

Hi Panda, the news article above from 13 March states

After Mr Mosley had left in the early hours of the morning, Philpott said he
and his wife had gone to bed and were woken by the fire alarm.


He said he tried to get up the stairs to his children but could not get
through the smoke and fire.

So apparently, he couldn't get up the stairs. They were downstairs in the conservatory so assume they could get out of a door.

I hate to think what kind of life those little ones had before they perished in that fire.

Yes, the guy should have been sterilised , he had a few chilren from his other relationship.I was thinking.....no don't laugh , if the smoke was rising it must have come from Downstairs yet the couple couldn't smell it until it engulfed the stairs? Is there a Report from the Fire Service suggesting how the fire started?

Mick claims that he was woken up by a smoke alarm. The thing is, as petrol was used to start the fire in the hallway, it would have spread extremely quickly.

I thought that was the fire where all the Indian Doctors children and Wife died. This method was used again then , but even if a smoke alarm goes off initially it would have presumably have been heard by at least a couple of the children.

Yes petrol was used in this case. There have been specialists giving evidence about the type of petrol used and comparing it petrol found on various items of clothing.

Really have no idea about the smoke alarm, I've only heard Mick say it and I wouldn't necessarily believe what he says. I'm sure it will all gradually come out during the trial.

Yes chrissie, the fact that they were sleeping in the Conservatory furthest away from the Stairs, very convenient. The Police must have evidence to charge them!!!

April Jones Mother never cried either when she was on T.V.

Generally speaking, I don't think that a lack of crying in public is necessarily a sign of guilt though. Finding it hard to keep a straight face is a different matter! That's how it appeared when the Philpotts gave a press conference soon after the tragedy.

I don't remember them laughing NBY, in fact Mrs Phillpotts looked very distressed.

I remember Kate being criticised for not showing emotion and when she eventually does, Gerry makes no attempt to comfort her , just looks stony faced straight ahead.

Probably someone who didn't believe , like me, that they were crying, Pholpott kept dabbing his eyes but no sign of a tear. Mrs Philpott too had a screwed
up face, but no tears.

A man who is alleged to have killed his six children in a house
fire has been accused in court of treating his wife like a slave.

Michael Philpott, 56, was accused at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday of
controlling his wife Mairead, 31, and treating her like a "skivvy".

The pair, and a third defendant Paul Mosley, are on trial for the
manslaughter of their six children in a house fire at their home in Allenton on
May 11 last year. All three deny the charges.

On the second day of giving evidence in his own defence, Philpott was
cross-examined by his wife's barrister Shaun Smith QC.

Mr Smith suggested Philpott had started or arranged the fire while his wife
was asleep, while Philpott, crying, answered "no I didn't, I love my kids, I'd
never endanger them".

Philpott admitted he had "been terrible to Mairead, I don't deny that".

Mr Smith asked Philpott: "You regarded her as your property, didn't you? Your
slave. That's what she was, wasn't she?

"She did everything in that house, didn't she, even when you were having a
relationship with another woman? You think you own her, don't you?"

Philpott shook his head and said "no".

The court heard there was "a pattern" to the women Philpott was attracted
to.

He began a relationship with Mairead when she was 19 and he was 43, and with
Lisa Willis when she was 18 and he was also 43.

Philpott told the jury his wife and his mistress Miss Willis had a sexual
relationship, saying they were "lovers" and that all three of them enjoyed it
when the women slept with other men, they found it a "turn on".

Miss Willis, 29, lived with the Philpotts and her five children - four of
them fathered by Michael Philpott - until she left with the youngsters in
February last year.

He admitted that Mairead had been present when he and Lisa first kissed but
rejected claims she was "hurt" when he brought another woman into their
relationship.

He said: "Can you help who you fall in love with? I didn't actually want two
women in my life. It just happened and I regret it.

"It might sound strange to you but I asked Mairead's permission. And I got
it. We was one happy family."

Philpott also told the court petrol residue found inside the house came from
filling a garden strimmer.

Later in the day in court, Philpott denied his wife was no longer "sticking
to their story" about the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Philpott was accused by the Richard Latham QC for the prosecution of being
self-obsessed and someone who if they did not get their way would "if all else
fails throw a sicky, flop to the ground, and when you cry there are no tears
it's all an act?"

Philpott replied: "I'd like you to stand here Mr Latham, let's see how you do
it." Later Mr Latham again asked: "You were in this together weren't you?"

Philpott replied: "No, I swear on my children’s graves ... " Mr Latham
interrupted: “Don't descend to that, don't demean yourself."

After Philpott and his wife were charged by the police they were recorded
having a hushed conversation in a prison van, Philpott said "are we sticking to
the story?", the jury has heard.

In court, Philpott insisted that was a reference to them engaging in dogging,
which they were too embarrassed to tell the police.

He also admitted that he had not had a bath or shower for three months prior
to the fire, he said his kids used to call him a "tramp" as he rarely changed
clothes.

Jade, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six and Jayden, five,
all died in the fire on Victory Road, Allenton, last year.

Their brother Duwayne, 13, was taken to Derby Royal Hospital but died three
days later.

Well well well chrissie, looks as if the crocodile tears didn't impress anyone. Mrs Philpott will never withstand questioning and probably drop Mick in it, they do have a strange lifestyle and I suspect Philpott is a big bully and she does what she is told.

A woman accused of killing her six children in a fire at the
family home in Derby says she does not know if her husband was responsible and
she could not rule anyone out.

Speaking at Nottingham Crown Court, Mairead Philpott, 31, said: "I don't know
if he is capable of it. I don't know if he has done it or not."

She was asked under cross-examination whether it was possible that Mick
Philpott, 56, got up in the night and set the fire without her knowledge.

She told the court: "I don't know, I was asleep. I can't rule out
anybody."

Richard Latham QC for the prosecution said to her: "Are you saying there is a
possibility your husband set this fire behind your back?"

"I honestly, don't know," she replied.

It was put to Mairead Philpott that "it can't be that he (Mick) is the
arsonist who did this behind your back, he couldn't have done it without your
knowing so you're either both not guilty, a third party is responsible or you
know he did it because you were part of it".

She was also asked about covert police recordings made after the
blaze.
The fire claimed the lives of six
siblings
In one passage of the recordings Mick Philpott is heard to say: "Don't say
nothing now, don't say nothing."

In another section he said: "Don't worry we will walk through it, I promise
you. Unless you want me to blab about it."

The prosecution allege that they were talking about a plot to start the
fire.

Mairead Philpott claims it was about not revealing details of their
unconventional sex life, which they feared would get into the press.

Mr Latham said: "This is not about sex. It's about the allegation of killing
your children." This was denied by Mrs Philpott.

Jade Philpott, 10, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five,
perished in the fire last May.

Duwayne, 13, died in Birmingham Children's Hospital days later.

On Monday, Mairead Philpott denied starting the fire at her home in Victory
Road and said there was no plan to start one with Mick and co-accused Paul
Mosley, 46.

The Philpotts and Mosley are on trial for the manslaughter of the Philpotts'
six children. All three deny the charges.

Just read on twitter that Paul Moseley will not be giving evidence and is exercising his right to remain silent.

Presumably so that he doesn't contradict anything the parents have said......
