Extradition Case Date Set For Shrien Dewani

Rachel Younger, Sky News correspondent
The extradition case for Shrien Dewani, the man wanted in South Africa for allegedly murdering his new wife, will start on May 3 at Woolwich Crown Court in London.
The 31-year-old was not present to hear Judge Riddle set out the timetable of the case against him.
However, his legal team were told he would be required to attend the next hearing at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on March 23.
Judge Riddle made it clear he had not excused Dewani this time because of his severe post-traumatic stress disorder but simply because the case could proceed equally well without him.
Dewani's counsel, Julian Knowles QC, told the court the case against extradition would centre on prison conditions in South Africa; whether a fair trial was possible; Dewani's mental and physical condition and the possible abuse of process and conduct in South Africa.
Mr Knowles said he was having great difficulty communicating with his client and his ongoing ill health was preventing him from taking instruction from him.
Dewani denies any involvement in the murder of his Swedish wife Anni, who was shot dead during a carjacking just outside Cape Town on their honeymoon in November.
Four South Africans have been arrested, with the Dewani's taxi driver Zola Tongo sentenced to 18 years for his part in the killing.
The South African authorities maintain Dewani masterminded his wife's murder.
Dewani sounds like a spoilt brat who has never been forced to face the consequences of his actions by feigning feeling really bad or feeling ill. He must think that by claiming to be so ill that he cannot instruct his solicitor that he's going to avoid all confrontation and facing up to his responsibilities, like a spoilt child who refuses to come out of his room when he has been asked to answer for his behaviour.
Also, I see that there are reports he's been seen 'out on the town' in the evenings. Results of his 'required' daytime recuperation seem remarkable, eh?

HONEYMOON murder suspect Shrien Dewani is in hospital following a suicide bid.
The 31-year-old - suspected over the killing last November of his bride Anni - had taken an overdose of pills.
Worried relatives were at his bedside in Bristol.
A source at the hospital said of the suicide attempt: "It was very serious."
Dewani had lost TWO STONE in the weeks before his suicide bid, it is claimed.
The care home tycoon was rushed to hospital after taking an overdose of pills.
Distraught relatives were at his bedside yesterday.
Last night it emerged that family members had become concerned about his health.
And it was revealed he had not been sleeping as the pressure of the case took its toll.
A source at the Bristol hospital treating him said: "He was brought in after he tried to kill himself. It isn't known what he took, but it was very serious.
"His family were very concerned, but he's getting round-the-clock care now."
Dewani, 31, is suspected over the alleged contract killing of 28-year-old Anni - his bride of just two weeks - in Cape Town, South Africa, last November.
Concern had been raised in recent days over whether he would receive a fair trial after a top prosecutor in South Africa branded him a "murderer".

Family spokesman Max Clifford said Dewani, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, had been suffering "severe post-traumatic stress disorder". The publicist said: "There has been a build-up over weeks and weeks - doctors have become increasingly concerned.
"He's lost a lot of weight - about 12 kilos in the last few weeks - and is not sleeping. His family are very, very worried."
Bullet
Mr Clifford added: "He was just getting weaker and weaker and weaker. He was not well enough to go to either of the extradition hearings.
"The doctors produced all the necessary evidence. He's just got thinner and thinner and there has been more concern for his family.
"He's been in a dreadful state since what happened to Anni. All of the horrible things that have come out since then have made it worse and worse."

Pretty Anni, from Sweden, died on honeymoon after the couple's taxi was hijacked in Cape Town's Gugulethu township.
She was found in the back of the dumped cab with a bullet wound to her neck.
Their driver Zola Tongo, 31, was jailed for 18 years in December. He told a court that Dewani paid him to have his wife killed.
Dewani, taken to hospital on Sunday, has denied these claims.
He is awaiting a May extradition hearing. Two others, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, are due in court this Friday to face charges of murder, robbery and kidnap.

Thanks chrissie. I have no sympathy for him. There's a much easier way to resolve the issues and that's to go back to SA and answer questions. As a 'care home tycoon,' he may know about medication since most of the clients who have made him a millionaire will be on meds. I bet he didn't swallow a couple of bottles of paracetamol!

I think he's been watching too many Bollywood films. He needs to cut out the drama that might get his family running to his side and excusing him anything and get back there. Are the police supposed to say,'Oh dear, look how the poor man is suffering.'? I think he should be 'sectioned,' for his own safety and held in a secure place until he can be extradited.

Honeymoon Murder: Dewani Suicide Bid Fears
11:43am UK, Tuesday February 22, 2011
Nicola Boden, Sky News Online
Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani is being treated in hospital amid fears he has tried to take his own life.

Shrien Dewani is in hospital after an apparent suicide attempt
Dewani, who is wanted in South Africa over the murder of his bride Anni last year, reportedly took an overdose of tablets.
His spokesman Max Clifford refused to confirm the suicide bid but said he was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Dewani, a care home boss from Bristol, is fighting extradition to South Africa over his wife's death.
He is accused of arranging her contract killing during their honeymoon in Cape Town in November.
Mr Clifford said the 31-year-old had lost almost two stone and was "very, very fragile" because of stress and depression.
Shrien and Anni Dewani

"He was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon, according to his family, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder," he said.
"It has been getting worse and causing particular concern to his family and his doctors."
Mr Clifford added: "He is in a very bad place at the moment, which is not surprising given the tragic case of his wife and all the accusations since.
"He is in a bad way. He has lost as much as 12 kilos in recent weeks. He is okay in hospital but, when he comes out, will have to have 24-hour medical care at home.
"This hasn't just happened in the last week, it's been building up after Anni's death and obviously what happened would have traumatised anybody.
"What's happened since has made it worse. We are hoping he will be home soon but he is very, very fragile, both physically and psychologically."
The Dewanis were travelling through the Gugulethu township on the outskirts of Cape Town on November 13 when their car was hijacked.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo and Dewani were ejected from the vehicle before his wife was driven away and shot. Her body was found later.

Jailed: Zola Tongo
In a plea bargain, Tongo claimed Dewani offered him 15,000 rand for the killing. He was jailed for 18 years for murder and several other charges last year.
The two alleged hitmen in the case, Xolile Mnguni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, are due in court in Cape Town on Friday.
Dewani is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on March 23 where lawyers are expected to argue he will not be given a fair trial in South Africa.
Last week, a top South African legal official sparked a storm after declaring Dewani's guilt on national television.
Director of public prosecutions Menzi Semelani claimed the Briton had "murdered his wife" in what was a "heinous crime" and also branded him a fugitive.
His comments followed those of police chief Bheki Cele, who prompted outrage by calling Dewani a "monkey" who came from London to murder his wife.

Dewani arrested in Priory 'bust-up.'
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3522077/Shrien-Dewani-arrested-in-Priory-bust-up.html
HONEYMOON murder suspect Shrien Dewani was yesterday kicked out of The Priory clinic after police arrested him over "a disturbance".
Dewani, who is on suicide watch, was sent to a secure hospital instead. Police will not say if Dewani, 31, attacked anyone or was himself attacked. But the incident was serious enough to be considered a breach of his bail.
Dewani, accused by South African prosecutors of hiring hitmen to shoot dead new bride Anni, is fighting moves to extradite him for trial.
He was sent to The Priory's psychiatric unit in Bristol by a judge last month after he took an overdose of pills while free on bail.
A source close to the family said Dewani's Priory bust-up was down to a "violent adverse reaction" to anti-depressants. The source added: "Over the weekend he was loud and noisy. There were a number of violent outbursts.
"Doctors decided he'd be better catered for elsewhere."
A source close to Dewani said: "He had a reaction to his medication which meant he was loud and noisy. There was no fight or argument but one female resident got in a heated discussion with him and taunted him, saying, 'You should go back to South Africa'."
After his arrest he was hauled back into court and ordered to the Cygnet Hospital, in Kewstoke, Somerset. It is described as "a tranquil and therapeutic environment to provide care and treatment for those individuals with complex mental illness".
Care home tycoon Dewani is said to be suffering post-traumatic stress over the death of Anni, 21. Her body was found in a South African township after a carjacking which Dewani escaped.
His extradition hearing is due next month. District Judge Simon Cooper said: "From the expert psychiatric reports, it is patently obvious Mr Dewani is severely ill."
The Sun revealed on Friday that South African police claim to have compelling video and phone evidence proving Dewani planned his wife's murder. He denies all the allegations.
He had been on £250,000 bail at his home in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, until the overdose.

In other words, he just got pretty worked up because somebody questioned him and didn't just accept the 'Oh I'm suffering' b*llox. A heated discussion would not get him arrested!

Re: LATEST NEWS ON DEWANI MURDER
Sky News Report 14/4/11
The family of a bride murdered on her honeymoon in South Africa has begged her British husband to reveal "what really happened" on the night she died.
Shrien Dewani denies ordering the killing of his new wife while in South Africa
Swedish-born Anni Dewani was killed last November after a taxi she and her new husband were travelling in was hijacked on the outskirts of Cape Town.
Shrien Dewani survived the ordeal but his 28-year-old bride was shot and her body later found in the abandoned vehicle.
The couple's taxi driver, Zola Tongo, was sentenced to 18 years in jail for Mrs Dewani's murder.
But in a plea bargain, he claimed Dewani offered him 15,000 rand (£1,400) to arrange the killing.
South African prosecutors want the 31-year-old Briton, who denies plotting is wife's murder, extradited over the allegations.
The late woman's brother told ITV news Dewani has "many questions to answer".
"There are many accusations against him. I think he has to answer them," said Anish Hindocha.
We beg you Shrien, if you really love her, if you really care for her, please give us the answers.

He went on: "I think he has to clear his name and tell us once and for all what really happened."
Her father, Vinod Hindocha, added: "We beg you Shrien, if you really love her, if you really care for her, please give us the answers. That's what we beg of you."
Dewani was recently moved to a secure hospital after a further deterioration in his mental state.
The Bristol businessman had been staying at the city's Priory clinic, but was relocated to the Cygnet Hospital in Somerset.
His spokesman Max Clifford told Sky News Online the medication he had been taking was making his behaviour worse and he had been getting more noisy and disruptive.
Mrs Dewani's family went on to reveal the "very difficult time" they have had since her death.
Anni's family said they could not rest until they knew the truth about her death
"It's torn the family apart," her sister Ami Densborg said.
"It's been five months since she died and every day we still think about her: in the morning, in the evening, when we talk to each other, it's always her.
"She's always on our minds and none of us can let this go."
Responding to the comments, a spokesman for the Dewanis said the Swedish family had turned down the opportunity to meet the Briton since he became a suspect.
"Immediately after Anni's death, Vinod Hindocha returned from South Africa with Shrien to Bristol," the spokesman said.
"He and his family sat with Shrien to ask about and hear what happened.
"After the allegations were made by the taxi driver the Hindocha family have declined to meet with Shrien."

DEWANI MOVED TO SECURE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL
Dewani Moved To Secure Psychiatric Hospital
2:04pm UK, Wednesday April 20, 2011
Rachel Younger, Sky Correspondent
Shrien Dewani, the man accused of killing his wife on their South African honeymoon last November, has been moved into a medium-security psychiatric hospital in Somerset.
Dewani is being compulsorily held at Fromeside under the Mental Health Act
His lawyer, Julian Knowles QC, told Westminster Magistrates Court Dewani had been admitted to Fromeside clinic under Section Two of the Mental Health Act.
He had been staying at the The Priory hospital nearby.
The 31-year-old will be compulsorily detained at Fromeside where his state of mind will be assessed by psychiatrists.
Adjusting the conditions for his £250,000 bail, Judge Howard Riddle QC ruled Dewani will no longer have to wear an electronic tag as he will be unable to leave the secure hospital.
Dewani was not present in court but he will have to attend his extradition hearing at Woolwich Crown Court on May 3.
The South African government wants him to return to Cape Town to stand trial in connection with the murder of his wife Anni.
Forensic officers inspect the car where Anni Dewani's body was found in Cape Town
The 28-year-old was shot dead after the couple's cab was hijacked in the Gugulethu township.
Her body was found in the abandoned car after her husband was released unharmed.
Their taxi driver is already serving an 18-month sentence for his role in the killing after telling the authorities that Mr Dewani hired hitmen to kill his bride - a claim Dewani has always denied.
His lawyers argue that he is suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder.
They claim his human rights would be breached if he was sent to a South African prison as no psychiatric care would be available.
Judge Riddle agreed that a full psychiatric report would not be available in time for the May extradition hearing, which will now be split.
Evidence on Dewani's mental health will be heard at a later date, delaying the final decision on whether or not he will stand trial in South Africa.
