Man arrested over missing Swindon woman Sian O'Callaghan
A man has been arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O'Callaghan, who disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Swindon on Saturday.

Miss O'Callaghan, 22, has not been seen since she left the town's Suju nightclub in the early hours.

Chief Superintendent Steve Hedley announced the news after police searching for Miss O'Callaghan appealed for sightings of a taxi.

He said: "Sian's family have been informed."

Ch Supt Headley, from Wiltshire Police, said: "A short time ago a man was arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O Callaghan and is en route to a police custody centre."

Police today said they believe missing Sian O'Callaghan could still be alive.

Speaking outside Gablecross Police Station in Swindon, Chief Superintendent Steve Hedley said: ''A short time ago, a man was arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O'Callaghan.

''He was arrested by Wiltshire officers in Swindon. It is a significant development in this investigation.

''Our priority is to find Sian and we are doing all that we can to do that.

''This is an exceptionally busy time for us and my officers and we will update you as soon as we can.

''We hope that Sian is alive. We are working on finding her and recovering her.''

He would not confirm whether the man arrested was the driver of a green Toyota Avensis estate which was swooped on by officers at Asda Walmart in Swindon earlier yesterday morning.

He added: ''Searches in Savernake Forest are still on-going.''

Oh how wonderful it would be if Sian were to be found traumatized but unharmed otherwise.

Yes it would be wonderful but........the phone last being detected in the forest....and what dogs have been bought in, search and find dogs or......they haven't said....

I think they abandoned the dogs idea , have you seen the Woods? they are massive!!! I noted the word "kidnap" but , much as I would like to think
Sian is alive, would the kidnapper leave her in a place where she might find her way out and escape? If he left her alive , tied up, why would he do that ?
If she is dead, as a Taxidriver he would have known about Areas with a deep river where he could have dumped her body. Obviously the Police have not found a body to charge him with Murder.

As I type, a White Tent erected by Police in the front Garden of a house in Swindon belonging to the Taxi Driver. Police still want everyone to keep loking for Sian. Neighbour of Taxi Driver says he has lived there for 4 years and is helpful and Friendly .

It could be the car? I noticed on Sky news, although he doesn't have a drive way, there are tyre tracks going from next doors drive to where the tent is as though he's tried to get the car off the road. Take a look next time it's on, see what you think?

This is the moment police hunting for missing Sian O’Callaghan swooped on a man at an Asda store in Swindon - and arrested him before seizing a vehicle.

Police revealed today the 22-year-old could still be alive - although they were continuing to search woodland for her with specially trained dogs. She has not been seen since Saturday.

The man arrested was named by neighbours as Chris Halliwell, a 47-year-old private hire driver.

Missing: Police believe Sian O'Callaghan may still be alive

Today a police white tent had been set up outside his semi-detached home in Swindon and it was cordoned off as forensic officers examined the scene.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the father-of-two was divorced and had been separated from his wife Lisa and children for some time.

Chief Superintendent Steve Hedley said they were still hoping to find Sian alive.

‘We are doing all we can to find her. It [the arrest] is a significant development in this investigation,’ he said.

‘We hope she’s alive and we are certainly working to find her.’

Officers believe Sian was driven to Savernake Forest, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, shortly after she left a nightclub.

Mobile phone records put her mobile in the forest 34 minutes after she left Suju club in Swindon – and they believe she must have gone in a vehicle to get their so fast.

Today eight police cars and 12 officers raced to an Asda store, in Swindon, and swooped on the suspect.

Witnesses described a thin white man, aged between 40 and 50, being cuffed and taken away, before a vehicle was towed.

A female shopper, who did not wish to be named, said she saw the man being taken by officers quickly.

She said: ‘There were more than eight police cars surrounding a car. The driver was white, short and very slim.

‘They got him out of the car and hurriedly put him into a undercover police car. There was no delay or chat. They took him away straight away. A recovery truck came soon after and towed the vehicle away.

‘As soon as I saw it, I knew what was happening.'

On the day of dramatic developments, the office administrator’s family thanked hundreds of members of the public who have volunteered to search the woodland for the young woman.

‘We have been so touched by the support shown by the community that we wanted to express our thanks,’ the family said in a statement released by Wiltshire Police.

‘The sheer numbers of people who have given up their time to help search for Sian and distribute appeal posters are overwhelming and we couldn’t ask for better support from the public, police and media.

‘We are aware of the reward that has been offered and are very grateful. We hope that this might help someone come forward with information to help the police find her.

‘This is an extremely difficult time for us and we continue to hope and pray that our beautiful girl is found soon.’

Anonymous wellwishers have upped the reward for information leading to Sian being found to £40,000.

Details of the increased bounty were released on posters of the slim brunette - which her friends were plastering across Swindon.

Ch Supt Hedley confirmed a man was being held this morning.

He said: ‘A short time ago a man was arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O’Callaghan and is on route to a police custody centre.

‘Sian’s family have been informed. Further information will be released in due course but it is not appropriate for me to make any further comment at this time.’

Detectives are also appealing for sightings of items Miss O’Callaghan is likely to have had in her handbag - large and dark-coloured with a beige flower on the side.

The bag’s contents included a distinctively-patterned front-door key, a black car key with yellow insulation tape, a Tesco Clubcard key fob, a yellow Kinder egg plastic casing containing a small animal with a furry belly, and lip gloss.

Miss O’Callaghan is also believed to have been wearing or have with her a DKNY watch with fake diamonds.

Sian O'Callaghan search: Two bodies found

Police searching for missing Sian O'Callaghan have found two bodies - one of whom is thought to be the missing woman - and arrested a 47-year-old man.

He is being questioned on suspicion of two murders and kidnap. Miss O'Callaghan, 22, was last seen leaving the Suju nightclub in Swindon on Saturday.

Her family have been informed of the development.

The second body has yet to be identified.

Det Supt Steve Fulcher said it was a fast-paced inquiry and Wiltshire police were under "extreme pressure".

He appealed for time to recover the bodies.

You're right, it's a terrifying thought isn't it?

At least another family will be out of their misery soon and be able to lay their loved one to rest. I'm trying to think of that other woman last year who went missing, haven't heard she'd been found.

And it was a taxi she got into. A man who could project a 'really pleasant,' persona, who was driving a taxi, and Sian probably thought she was doing the right thing to be safe at that hour of the morning. What a wicked man, preying on a vulnerable young woman.
