Officer held over hack probe 'leak'
August 19, 2011
0000Text Size A A A 3 CommentsA Scotland Yard detective has been arrested by his own force over apparent leaks to journalists during the phone hacking probe
The police chief in charge of the phone hacking investigation has spoken of her anger as a detective in her own team was arrested over leaks to journalists.
Officers arrested and suspended their 51-year-old colleague as former News of the World feature writer Dan Evans was questioned on suspicion of voicemail interceptions.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers expressed annoyance over the detective constable's alleged "unauthorised disclosure" during the investigation.
The Operation Weeting chief said: "I made very clear when I took on this investigation the need for operational and information security. It is hugely disappointing that this may not have been adhered to."
The detective constable was arrested at work on Thursday afternoon before being released on bail until September 29.
Mr Evans, 35, was bailed after facing several hours of questioning on suspicion of conspiring to unlawfully intercept voicemails, sources said.
The journalist, who was arrested by appointment at a London police station, was suspended by the axed Sunday tabloid after interior designer Kelly Hoppen, who is stepmother to actress Sienna Miller, brought a damages claim alleging that he tried to hack into her voicemails in June 2009.
The former paper and lawyers for the journalist have said an extensive investigation found no evidence to support Ms Hoppen's claims. It is thought that Scotland Yard arrested the writer over separate phone hacking allegations.
Mr Evans, who joined the News of the World in 2005 and has been suspended since April 2010, is the 14th arrest of the fresh phone hacking investigation. Like his colleagues, he is currently part way through a 90-day consultation period after the paper was closed on July 10 amid growing political and financial pressure over the hacking scandal.
A Guardian spokesman said: "We note the arrest of a Scotland Yard detective on suspicion of misconduct in a public office relating to unauthorised disclosure of information. On the broader point raised by the arrest, journalists would no doubt be concerned if conversations between off-the-record sources and reporters came routinely to be regarded as criminal activity. In common with all news organisations we have no comment to make on the sources of our journalism."

Substantial Investors in NewsCorp are to meet Directors to discuss Governance.
I suspect this is because of the James Murdoch scandal where he may have lied to the Committee. Also, the other day Rupert Murdoch suggested that
he would choose Casey to succeed him.

Crikey Badboy, looks like the Murdoch Family will get their comeuppance.!!!!! Majority Newscorp Shareholders were balloted a few weeks ago on
whether the Murdoch should have majority votes and replies would be kept secret. Rupert Murdoch recently nominated a Newscorp Director, I think his name is Casey, as his successor, not James. The Family taking Civil Action would have to sue News International I think because NOTW
has closed down.

sky News Report
The News
International chairman will be required to give further evidence to the
Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee following an appearance in July.
Committee chairman John Whittingdale told Sky News that MPs were "beginning
to reach the end" of their deliberations but wanted to tie up "loose ends" by
recalling witnesses.
He said the committee wanted to first hear from former senior News
Corporation executive Les Hinton and lawyer Mark Lewis, who is representing
victims.
He said Mr Hinton would be asked about the period in which payments were made
to former NOTW royal correspondent Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn
Mulcaire, who were jailed in 2007 for eavesdropping on voicemail messages.
James Murdoch first appeared before the committee in
July
"There are questions arising from a time when Mr Hinton was running News
International, particularly at the time when the payments were made to Clive
Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire," Mr Whittingdale said.
The committee also wants to hear from Farrer's, the solicitors who advised
News International on the six-figure payment made to settle the case of Gordon
Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, who took
legal action over alleged phone-hacking.
Mr Whittingdale said: "As a final session, we will have some more questions
based on what we have heard which we will want to put to James Murdoch."
The questions will focus on discrepancies between Mr Murdoch's evidence in
July
and the evidence given to the committee last week by ex-NOTW editor
Colin Myler and former News International lawyer Tom Crone.

MET seeks info from the Guardian under the Official Secrets Act.
Met Bid To Expose Phone-Hack Sources
11:46pm UK, Friday September 16, 2011
The Metropolitan Police is using the Official Secrets Act in an
effort to force the Guardian to reveal the sources of its reports on the
phone-hacking scandal.
The newspaper's editor Alan Rusbridger described the move as
"vindictive and disproportionate", pledging it would be resisted "to the
utmost".
Among the details the police are thought to be seeking is the source
of the paper's report revealing the mobile phone of murdered teenager
Milly Dowler had been hacked.
That report prompted by far the biggest public outcry of those stories related to the News Of The World phone-hacking scandal.
Mr Rusbridger said: "It seems to me an extraordinarily heavy-handed
use of the Official Secrets Act which is basically about espionage and
international relations and things like that to defeat the privilege
journalists have to protect their sources.
Scotland Yard statement
"What they are trying to do is to find out the source of the
embarrassment of the articles - and no doubt the Guardian's coverage was
embarrassing to the police."
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's PM programme, he added: "It looks vindictive and it looks ill-judged and disproportionate."
The paper said the police intended to go before a judge at the Old
Bailey on September 23 to apply for the order under the Official Secrets
Act 1989.
Scotland Yard confirmed it had applied for a production order against
The Guardian and one of its reporters "in order to seek evidence of
offences connected to potential breaches relating to Misconduct in
Public Office and the Official Secrets Act".
The Guardian journalist Amelia Hill has been questioned by police over leaks
"The application is about the MPS seeking to identify evidence of
potential offences resulting from unauthorised leaking of information,"
it said in a statement.
"The MPS can't respond to the significant public and political
concern regarding leaks from the police to any part of the media if we
aren't more robust in our investigations and make all attempts to obtain
best evidence of the leaks."
The statement also said that the Met was not seeking to use the law
"to prevent whistle blowing or investigative journalism that is in the
public interest".
"We pay tribute to the Guardian's unwavering determination to expose
the hacking scandal and their challenge around the initial police
response," it said.

Re: Is this Armageddon for Murdoch and NewsCorp?
It is reported that Newscorp will pay the award to the Dowlers, $4.7 Million.........if this applies to ALL the claims against the NOTW , the Shareholders
may well demand that Murdoch stands down , the voting rights of the Murdoch Family adjusted so they don"t have overall control and a new
Chairman will be appointed.

Ted Turner, he of Turner Classic Films, interviewed on his take on the Warren Buffet comment that the very wealthy should pay more Taxes commented on Rupert Murdoch who he apparently knows well . He said if a Company breaks the Law it should be punished and at 8o yrs of age,
Murdoch should step down. In fact, with the payout by Newscorp for the hacking scandal he thought Murdoch would have no option.

Andy Coulson is suing News Intl because they have stopped paying his Legal Fees and he hasn"t worked since July. There is also the case of
Neil Wallis, a former senior advisor to News Intl. who also had his Legal Fees paid by News Intl. He went on to work for the Metropolitan Police who
deny leaking his story to the Daily Telegraph.
If Murdoch lasts to the end of the Year as Chairman of Newscorp I will eat my hat.!!!!!!

Re: Is this Armageddon for Murdoch and NewsCorp?
Hacking: Media Group Faces New Legal Claims
6:45am UK, Saturday September 24, 2011
Fresh legal rows have hit News International, with new allegations of phone hacking and claims of more victims.
It has been revealed that former News Of The World (NOTW) editor Andy Coulson is suing News Group Newspapers, the publishing arm of the media giant.
Papers were served at the High Court on Friday "regarding the termination of the payment for his legal action".
A spokesman for law firm DLA Piper, which represents Mr Coulson, said: "We can confirm that proceedings have been issued."
News International (NI) declined to comment.
It had been reported earlier this month that NI was paying DLA Piper for their legal advice to Mr Coulson following his arrest.
Mr Coulson resigned from his position as Prime Minister David Cameron's spin chief in January and was later arrested on suspicion of corruption and phone hacking. He is on police bail.
A lawyer for Jade Goody's mother says the family fears late star's phone was hacked
It has also emerged that the family of Jade Goody fear the late
celebrity could have had her phone hacked and are reportedly set to
contact Scotland Yard.
The police force has said it will not comment on individual cases.
Publicist Max Clifford told The Guardian that Ms Goody's mother Jackiey Budden also believes she was targeted.
He said: "She will be going to the police. She believes her phone was hacked by the News Of The World, and Jade's.
"Jade told me, 'I'm convinced my phone is being hacked'."
News International also declined to comment on the allegations.
Murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler's phone was allegedly among those hacked
In addition, it has been alleged that Neil Wallis, the former deputy
editor of the NOTW was paid more than £25,000 by NI while working at
Scotland Yard as a police consultant.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said Mr Wallis's contract with the police
force included confidentiality, data protection and conflict of interest
clauses, all of which would have prohibited him from selling on any
information while employed by them.
He added: "Neil Wallis was not provided access to the Metropolitan Police Service's IT systems."
Phil Smith of Tuckers Solicitors, who represent Mr Wallis, told the
Daily Telegraph they had complained formally to the Met about leaking
information about the case.
The Scotland Yard spokesman added: "On Friday, the Met received a
letter of complaint from solicitors acting for Neil Wallis. This is
being considered."
Any US court action is likely to again focus attention on whether phones of 9/11 victims and relatives were hacked
Earlier,
it was disclosed that action is also set to be launched against News
Corporation by American lawyers over phone hacking at the NOTW.
Proceedings will be lodged in New York next week in a bid to seek
statements from the media giant, according to Mark Lewis, the lawyer for
the family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.
Mr Lewis, who negotiated a multimillion-pound payout for the Dowler
family from NI over hacking claims, said its parent company could also
be held responsible for activities at the paper.
"Potentially it has very serious ramifications for News Corporation
because the American damages for civil claims are far higher than
anything in an English court," Mr Lewis said.
Mr Lewis is understood to have instructed a New York-based lawyer representing about 20 families of 9/11 victims.
"The action will be looking at News Corp's liability for action as
far as its subsidiaries," Mr Lewis added. "It will raise issues of
corporate governance."
The
announcement comes days after NI confirmed it is in advanced settlement
talks with the parents of Milly Dowler over police claims that the
13-year-old's mobile phone was hacked after she went missing.
So far 16 people have been arrested on suspicion of phone hacking at the axed tabloid.

h buildersbum,
The thing is, Newscorp, the Parent Company will be responsible for paying all thes claims against the NOTW!!!! Major shareholders recently sent letters
to all Shareholders of Newscorp asking their opinion on Murdoch and his Son James who we now know will be called before the PCC again. Also,
Newscorp shares, like all the others around the World have taken a beating so don"t be surprised if Murdoch is asked to step down, maybe James as
well.

Breaking News, the European Court has ruled that the BskyB Sports which shows Football Games and has sole right with the Premier League is illegal.

Re: Is this Armageddon for Murdoch and NewsCorp?
Breaking News.
ISS ( Independent Shareholder Services has recommended that 13 of the 15 Board Members of Newscorp should resign, including Rupert
and James Murdoch.
The hacking scandal has shown a lack of Stewardship by the Board which has resulted in Newscorp being hurt financially by the scandal..
One problem is, the Murdoch family own 40% of the voting rights.!!!!
Has anyone noticed how slow the Committee has been to set a date for James Murdoch to attend another meeting?

The fact that there is a delay is significant because it indicates that there is some sort of tactical manoeuvring going on.

Morning Angelique, yes, Newscorp IS too big to fall, but a while ago, an American can"t remember his name Casey? something like that
was rumoured to succeed Murdoch , who said when he decided to retire he would nominate him rather than his Son James. I think this latest
report will force Murdoch to retire, but the family will retain it"s 40 % shares which gives them 70% of the voting rights. This has long
angered other shareholders but now with an investigation by the FBI and Australia regarding phone hacking, the Murdochs will have to listen.
