Maddie McCann: Portuguese and British Police reassessing abduction case
Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias has reported that a new team of investigators of the Portuguese PJ police are working with Britain’s Scotland Yard in reassessing the evidence in the high-profile case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann – even though the case has not been officially reopened.
What's New — 09 March 2012 by Pedro Carreira Garcia
The high-profile case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a tourist complex in Praia da Luz in the Algarve is being reevaluated by Portuguese and British police forces nearly six years after the events.
In partnership with Britain’s Metropolitan Police Service (Scotland Yard), the Portuguese crime investigation police – Polícia Judiciária (PJ) – has been asked to review the case which was shelved in 2008 by the Portuguese Attorney General. A new team of PJ investigators has been appointed to sift through the evidence and eventually proceed with the reconstitution of the events in the run-up to Maddie’s disappearance, according to Friday’s edition of the Portuguese daily newspaper Jornal de Notícias.
The newspaper highlights the fact that British authorities are still actively working on the case, with a team of 37 investigators, after spending €2.2m on the case in 2011. According to the newspaper, Scotland Yard concluded that the investigation could only proceed in collaboration with the Portuguese police. After a controversial 14-month investigation that ended with multiple criticisms directed at both countries and the media, and several people being given arguido (formal suspect) status – including Madeleine’s own parents, Gerry and Kate McCann – , the case was closed by the Portuguese Attorney General Pinto Monteiro in 2008 due to the absence of conclusive evidence.
Even if the case has not been officially reopened by Portugal’s Attorney General, both police forces are already working together in a reassessment of the evidence gathered. Jornal de Notícias says that after the 2007 investigation led by the controversial PJ inspector Gonçalo Amaral, who was replaced by the PJ’s former deputy national director, José Rebelo, a team from the northern city of Porto with experience in abduction cases, and with no prior connection with the original investigation, has been appointed to review the case.
The newspaper also reports that Scotland Yard have already made four trips to Portugal during the last few months to work with the new team. It is thought that one of the aims is to work on a possible reconstitution of the events of the evening of 3 May 2007. The newspaper stresses that this was not possible at the time of the occurrence, as both the McCanns and their friends – referred to by the British media as the “Tapas Seven” – refused to do so.
According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, the current deputy national director of the PJ police, Pedro do Carmo, admitted that the Portuguese police “was the first to form a working group to reevaluate the elements” of the case, one year ago.
The McCanns reacted to this development by saying in a statement sent to Lusa: ”this is exactly what we were asking for. We hope that this reevaluation will lead to a reopening of the case in due time.”
The McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, Rogério Alves, later told Lusa he viewed “this return to the investigations as a very positive sign in the expectation that it can shed light on what really happened to Madeleine, which is what really matters.”

Re: McCann case reopened?
I see the tabloids are still spinning the old porkie that the parents have campaigned for the case to be reopened. It's a bit like a pantomine "Oh no they haven't". Even the SY review wasn't quite what they were looking for and was only reluctantly welcomed when any other response would have been churlish at best. I guess it is a bit late in the day to expect to have any accuracy in reporting..

Very good question Iris. My money is on Oldfield.
The sequel to the bewk is suddenly looking a lot more interesting. Poor Kate, she will have to re-write it now. She is going to be very busy.

Re: McCann case reopened?
Would someone please explain why, after almost 5 years the McCanns still need a PR Spokesman???? After so many T.V. interviews around Europe promoting her Book Kate and Gerry should be able to utter two or three sentences to the Press, thereby saving the Fund an unnecessary expense.
For what it's worth, a review of the Press on Breakfast T.V. showed only the Daily Mirror report with a photo of Madeleine and the brief comment that
there was to be a joint investigation , preferring to discuss instead more important News.

Morning AnnaEsse......they look a right pair of miseries , do you think the Daily Star waded through their photos of the pair and picked the most representative of their thoughts.
I'm waiting to see what the Daily Express and sycophant James Murray comes up with

The Daily Star's article is short and reads like a press release. At one point it talks about Amaral, "pictured above," though there is no image of Amaral. And yes, it does look rather like the Star trawled through its store of images to find the most displeased looking McCanns!

Re: McCann case reopened?
Iv'e been trying for the last 5 minutes to copy the front page if the Daily Express....I give up.!!!
Anyway, there is a small corner of the front page with a photo of Madeleine, the one in the red dress and the heading "Parents joy as Portugese Police
start fresh hunt" and the report is inside, so , it seems the Mccanns are no longer headline news.

Thanks for the link, the comments section tells a very interesting story, i'm surprised to see the moderation hasn't been as biased as usual. Very interesting - something has to give, something's brewing.
I think the moderation has kicked in, I could barely find a single anti comment, plenty pro and a few anti Portugese. Definitely moderated as I have seen loads of anti comments in previous DM articles.
Most annoying the half wits who natter on about ' the beautiful child' 'the beautiful daughter' who must be found. So if it were a plain or even ugly child, we wouldn't be so upset?
Quite right, we wouldn't - the media obsession with external beauty is disgusting. TM marketed their child extremely well.
Beautiful and unique - which she only became after her death.
Before that, imo she looked like a not very well lonely little girl.
Good choice of photo though, that mean little mouth of Gerry!

They are so happy they have not found the time to up-date their own find madeleine site with this exciting news. Wonder why that is.
I hope to god the Portugese stick to their guns and refuse to be walked all over this time.

It wouldn't surprise me if the McCanns were to ask for the case hearing to be postponed.

Thanks Iris. I couldn't remember what they were called. I guess it is an insult to those useful and fascinating little fish. We had one when we had a tropical tank a few years ago.

If it's likely to be prejudicial to Criminal Investigation, it will probably be further postponed.
It will be interesting to see which party sets that in motion, though ......................
(Unless, of course, the decision is taken out of their hands by Judicial intervention).

Now Kate sometimes has a mouth like a fish. Especially when she does that "she moved on" thing. It's exactly like a trout with a hook in it.
Or even when she's miserable and reluctantly promoting a book.
