McCann case reopened?

I am remaining cautiously optimistic.

I will wait for any official news

but something seems to be happening

I think CdeM is a respected Newspaper and maybe a journalist on JdeN heard a rumour the case was to be re-opened but didn't check it out before it was printed.

If this rumour were true, Cameron would be the first to know, then the McCanns presumably who wouldn't waste time letting the media know.

I hope I'm wrong.

Trying not to be overly optimistic but there's a lot in this latest piece from Joana to be hopeful about, including:

Is all this just spin to cover themselves ?(seeing as it's TM's Portugese lawyer's mentor who seems to be behind this) Because it looks as if the Lisbon trial may not go their way. Once again the creaking out of date 'sightings' the 'not knowing where the child might be' are resurrected.

It's sounding good but like you, I'm trying to keep a lid on my optimism. Fingers crossed.

Reading between the lines, it seems to me that SY has either requested a collaboration with the Portuguese Police "the investigators concluded that nothing would be done without an articulation with Portugal" or the latter have decided to launch their own re-analysis of the case, and allocated a team. "In Portugal, a team of investigators from the PJ [Judiciary Police] in Oporto has been chosen. This time, the PJ’s national directory chose to nominate a team that had nothing to do with the case to work on it. The choice fell on the Oporto PJ’s Regional Section for Criminal Investigation and Prevention, headed by chief coordinator Helena Monteiro. This is a brigade that is experienced in disappearance cases. One example of success involved a girl from Lamego, Carina Ferreira, whose body was found in a highway ravine after one month of searches. The goal is to search for leads to follow and to fill any gaps in the initial investigations, using a fresh look on the case."

And there seems to be a hint in here somewhere that a reconstruction is desired: "the possibility of the re-enactment of the circumstances that preceded Maddie’s disappearance, on the 3rd of May, 2007, in Praia da Luz, Lagos, is open".

and perhaps this would require formally reopening the process, with Goncalo Amaral saying the British Authorities question why it was archived in the first place.

The team selected were involved in the case of Carina Ferreira (a 21 year old woman who tragically died in a car crash). She was reported missing when she didn't arrive at a party but it turned out she crashed and died whilst driving there. I can't see the relevance of this case to the Madeleine McCann case at all.... except in one important respect. The reason Carina's body wasn't found for ages was that the car, insde which she was found, still strapped into her seatbelt, had gone down the side of a rocky cliff and had become stuck and concealed in trees and bushes, hence the helicopters, specialist divers etc. didn't locate it. So this team of detectives, apparently chosen to re-examine the Madeleine McCann case and headed by Helena Monteiro, are experts in locating not so much missing people, but missing bodies, and what's more, bodies that have become concealed, for one reason or another.

That was what jumped up me, too. This is a team that are experts in finding bodies.

Madeleine: Lawyer considers positive revival of investigation.

The lawyer for the parents of Madeleine McCann, the British girl who disappeared in the Algarve in 2007, considered today welcomes the decision of the Portuguese and British police to reactivate the investigation.
"Until we find out what happened to Madeleine it will not be closed. I see now this recrudescence of the investigations as a very positive sign in the expectation that they will discover what really happened to Madeleine and that is indeed what matters out, "said Rogerio Alves, told Lusa.

According to a report released today by the Journal News, Scotland Yard has a team of 37 people to investigate the matter and in Portugal in February, the Criminal Investigation Department assigned the case to the Chamber of Criminal Investigation and Prevention of Porto.

"What parents want, above all, is to discover what happened to her daughter, nursing, of course, the hope still that they can meet life. For this to happen is that the police need not cease to seek, do not cease to follow the clues that are available ", said the lawyer.

To Rogério Alves, these decisions demonstrate only that "the police are aware and is committed to discovering what happened to Madeleine."

The lawyer says not to fear a resumption of proceedings in court, which will only happen if new evidence is discovered, and even expresses the wish that 'investigations bring sufficient evidence to reopen the proceedings ".

"Parental responsibility was rejected by prosecutors. Parents have nothing to fear and what they want is new information which might contribute to the discovery of truth and that it may pass through the reopening of the case, "he concluded.

Is being analyzed by the Judicial Police (PJ) of Porto, in partnership with Scotland Yard, the reopening of investigations in Portugal to the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, advances the Jornal de Notícias. The process was filed in 2008 by the Public Ministry, but the PJ Porto may be called the new steps in Madeleine McCann case to understand what happened to the child who disappeared in the Algarve.
The PJ is considering reopening the case Maddie McCann, in partnership with Scotland Yard police in search of new data that enable advances in unraveling the disappearance of the English in Portugal. The prosecutor dismissed the case in 2008, but the PJ was called to the Port ums possible reopening of the case.

According to the national leadership of PJ Porto investigators were chosen on the basis that they had never been involved in pursuing the disappearance of Maddie and because they have experience in such investigations.

There are already joint actions between the Port and PJ Scotland Yard, the second advance on Friday the JN, which may lead to demand for new information on the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared 4 years.

The Regional Chamber of Criminal Investigation and Prevention of PJ Port were called to intervene on never having been involved in the case. The deputy national director, Pedro Carmo, which explains the JN, despite having been made to prosecute, the PJ has never ceased to be interested in ascertaining the truth.

On 23 and November 25, 2011, Scotland Yard has made efforts in Spain. Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have proved at that time "very happy with the progress of investigations." At the time, was not known if there was some significant data on the whereabouts of the British girl. But it was noted that Scotland Yard continued investigations, unlike PJ.

Since the reopening of the case, Scotland Yard has sent police to Portugal three times. Madeleine McCann was almost four years when she disappeared on 3 May 2007, the apartment where he spent a family vacation in Praia da Luz (Algarve).

The case is filed in Portugal, and the Attorney General's Office will reopen only if there are new facts. The PJ Porto can make his debut in this investigation.

Portugal's Correio da Manha newspaper reported that the PJ officers have not found any new leads that point to Madeleine's whereabouts and so will not formally reopen their investigation.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry obviously welcome the work being done by the PJ in Oporto alongside that of the Met investigative team.

"They clearly hope that it will lead to the case being reopened in due course.

The last line can have 2 meanings. Either

a) they are making this statement knowing full well that the case will not be re-opened, unless new information comes to light, or
b) they know that the case IS about to be reopened, and they want us all to think that it was by their request/command.

I must admit I'm starting to get confused now.

After almost 5 years of false dawns I am trying not to get too complacent that the end may be near. But things are moving and it's looking good, the news about SY and the Oporto PJ getting together is IMO the biggest news since the book ban was overturned some 17 months ago.

I'm very confused also. So is the case being re-opened or not. But still maybe this is a sign that something is going to happen even if nobody knows what. It was a strange decision to shelve a case like this I thought. Looks to me as if they knew what happened but didn't have enough proof for a court case.

You know what it means Iris, the mcs are spinning, they know the case is being reopened......

I hoped SY becoming involved wasn't going to be a whitewash but now l'm much more confident it ISN'T going to be, this review happened because it was to CATCH the McCanns.

I loved the line about there not being any more leads to find Maddie, in other words they know the McScam 'sightings' are false and unfortunately SY have found all leads go back to the parents and tapas 7.

Let's hope SY have found easier access to bank, mobile phone and medical records this time.

Yes, it is a bit confusing isn't it Mary. Maybe the new super-squad have found something, or will find something which will lead to the case being re-opened. Then we can sit back and watch the fireworks as Sir Gerry and co try to squirm out of doing a reconstruction. If they refuse, the negative publicity will finish the dwindling scraps of public sympathy that they have left, IMO.

im keeping everything crossed , i have always said their greed might one day might be the start of some kind of justice and at min i still feel that . i will always want justice for little madeleine but unless one of the tapas crew has changed their minds i cannot see any court trial at min

That's what l have said all along Mary, the mcs being free is not down to political interference - just not enough evidence to charge them with the murder/manslaughter of Maddie, and that's what the PJ were going for.

But l think with SY becoming involved they were determined to change that.....
