KATE and Gerry McCann are no longer employing private detectives to search for their missing daughter Madeleine.
They are pinning all hopes of finding their child on Scotland Yard detectives who are conducting an “investigative review” of evidence but have yet to make a breakthrough.
The Sunday Express understands the McCanns stopped using former police detectives Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley some months ago when their contract ran out.
While they worked on the case they built up a good relationship with Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leicestershire, who felt they applied sound common sense to their inquiries in Britain and Portugal.
“There was no fall-out,” said a source. “They did the work as required and got on well with Kate and Gerry. Their contract simply came to its natural end.
“It was felt the lead should be taken by the Scotland Yard detectives working on the review. Dave and Arthur passed over all their material to the Yard officers.” There has been no mention of the decision to end the contract on the McCanns’ findmadeleine website, which still states:

The majority of the fund money has been and continues to be spent on investigative work to help find Madeleine.

“Additionally money continues to be spent on the wider ‘Awareness Campaign’, reminding people that Madeleine is still missing and to remain vigilant.”
The fund has been bolstered by at least £1million raised from Kate’s bestselling book Madeleine.
It was published in May 2011 shortly after the fourth anniversary of her eldest child’s disappearance from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.
At the book’s launch, GP Kate, 44, said: “While she remains missing, the onus is on us to keep looking for her. Investigations and campaigns cost money, which has to be raised by us.
“Every penny we raise through the sales of this book will be spent on our search for Madeleine. Nothing is more important to us.”

Then, after successfully lobbying David Cameron, Scotland Yard was called on to conduct the review using some of the force’s best murder detectives.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who leads the review codenamed Operation Grange, said earlier this year he believed Madeleine, then three, had been snatched by a stranger and could be alive.
At that time his team was following 195 potential new leads. Portuguese police chiefs, who head all global investigations, have refused officially to re-open the case, although some officers have been assigned to assist the Yard.
In August, Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe appeared to cast doubt on the review’s future when he said he would ask David Cameron how long he would fund it for.
However, there was good news last week when the Home Office said there was no deadline on the work being conducted in secrecy by detectives.
A spokesperson said: “We have no plans to end the funding and the review into the search for Madeleine will continue.” It is thought it will have cost £2.5million by the end of the year.

Thanks for this bit of news interested. Trouble is , the Accounts for the fund are so lacking in detail there is no way to tell how much has been spent on "searching" for Madeleine and how much on Legal fees, Directors etc..a far cry from the original announcement by the Fund Chairman, John McCann (Gerry's brother) that the fund would be operated on the "good governance for charities" guidelines.

Well, there may be at least a few readers who will now be asking why the official web site hasn't changed and if the McCanns are no longer employing private detectives what the million or so raised from the book is being spent on. What investigation?

I think the backlash will come when the £3 million spent on the review will prove to be a waste of money. I think Clarence finding a new job suggests his services were not required as are the Detectives (should be detective, the other guy retired through ill health a while ago.) The fund will close down because the public probably stopped donating a while ago when it was announced that SY would be doing a review.

Disagree entirely as with respect, you know nothing about SY and what they're doing.
Neither do I know anything, and more importantly neither do the mccanns.
If they knew anything it would have been spun by now. SY for once is a closed shop and therefore I'd keep an open mind. The team who are investigating have nothing to prove, they had also in SY cracked the Stephen Lawrence case just as this one was starting. So it will be interesting where this goes....

Wheres the money going then...the McCanns profit from the books & donations should pay at least in part for the SY review into their daughters dissapearance,they are so kind letting SY take the lead & retiring cowlumbo & dumbo

Seeing as the PIs have been 'missing' for a considerably long time now, isn't that official fm statement a blatant misrepresentation of aims and objectives which will lead potential donors (who may not know all the facts) up the garden path as to where their money is going?

Questions should be asked.

That means that Operation Grange will have plenty of time to tear up all those bogus sightings, put away the crystal balls and pendulums, stop rummaging in portentous entrails and concentrate specifically on what WE know and what THEY know is the real meat of this investigative review.

Sooner is always better than later.

Didn't he say it was expected the £3 million would run out by Christmas ? There was grumbling by some MP's at the time and Theresa May said she was initially going to recommend a scoping exercise but the £3 million was found to be available from the Home Office , not Scotland Yard. I think since this is Taxpayers money we have a right to know the result , if there are any charges against the McCanns we will know the review was a success, if not..........

I watched a video the other day - Gerry McCann justified the spending of fund money by claiming they employed a team of private investigators that was led by one man, Dave Edgar. Turns out that the team consisted of just one man, one leader. Crowley and Edgar. And they've not been employed for months...

Yep, according to the Sunday Express...

The Sunday Express understands the McCanns stopped using former police detectives Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley some months ago when their contract ran out.

So, how long is 'some months'? How long is a piece of string?... Did their employ end when the review started? If so, that's a little more than 'some months'.

The 'source' felt the need to tell us “there was no fall-out.” and that they felt the search should be left to Scotland Yard. They said there was no fall-out when Doug Skehan and brother, John McCann (directors of the fund) also departed. Oh, how abandoning ship is done on such good terms these days.

If the McCanns are not funding a search for Madeleine, why then are they still asking for funding to search on their Official Facebook page? In fact, they've specifically pointed out that they've made it easier for the gullible to donate when buying things from their online store. How kind.

High time this 'fund' and private investigation was scrutinised once and for all. The public should be made fully aware that this is the McCanns' own private company of which they sit as directors and decide how the money is spent. If they want to boost their balance, they should do what every other owner of a small business does - damn well work for it. Their 'business plan' should be laughed into next week. Unfortunately it isn't, and the naive and gullible really believe they are funding a search for their daughter. A daughter they didn't even look for themselves.

Pointed out on Twitter this morning - how can the McCanns' search be hindered by the publications of Goncalo Amaral and Tony Bennett when there is no funded search or investigators? True... their claims have no standing in court and it would appear that the McCanns themselves are hindering their own search by not renewing their own investigator's contract.

Are the McCanns searching themselves then? Nope, everything is hunky dory as they holiday in Ireland. Edgar's wages didn't stretch too far, did they? Apparently they're residing in a remote cottage somewhere. It must be some distance to the nearest pub, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

A “source” who, apparently, cannot be named for some unstated reason, says:

in the context of a missing and 'findable' child?
What is 'natural' about ending their private
investigation without a result? Not unless they
have decided to call it a day, or they accept for
others to do all the searching.

You can order posters, wristbands and more such delights, but you have to pay. The website and facebook can be the only costs to the Fund, Facebook is free unless they pay someone to run it.
It is quite possible that the detectives haven't done anything since SY took over, since they handed them their homework. ("How I lived in a lawless village in wildest Portugal disguised as a fruitpicker and other things we did on our holidays....').
Since the taxpayer is funding the SY search which by now must have gone past the 3 million (April it stood at 2.5 million I believe) and we hear sotto voce that SY will carry on regardless, taking into the account the thousands of psychic sightings as well as the very slowly diminishing 195 leads - how is the Fund helping the search? How are the McCanns searching even as we speak?
Selling posters in order to have others 'search' for Madeleine does not drain the Fund. Or is time spent writing messages for the website and answering phonecalls charged to the Fund?

I think this is a change in tactic by the McCanns. There is no search by them (not that there was to begin with). They can no longer ask for money from the public for a search, SY are involved. They are still money hungry so now the begging bowl is out for an awareness campaign. Perhaps there will be a new product range also.

I have no doubt time spent writing messages for the website are charged to the fund, as is rent on an "office" in Rothley Towers. There are lots of expenses a company can legally have, and the fund is after all a company.

So we are now at the point where:-

The parents have not yet started searching and are not showing any immediate signs of doing so, unless they think she is in Donegal;
There are no private detectives involved in looking for Madeleine;
SY are sitting in an office reading files for more than a year now with nothing concrete to report as far as we know;
The file in Portugal is sitting on a shelf gathering dust

and they continue to look for money from whoever is foolish enough to part with it.

The only awareness campaign that is needed is one to warn the unsuspecting public of what is going on in this sorry story. So much for leaving no stone un-turned. It is a downright utter disgrace that this can happen.
