Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
I doubted the McCanns from seeing and hearing them the very next day in that interview with the torch.
No one takes the risk of being caught breaking in or going out of an apartment to steal a child, they would not take the risk when it is easier to take a child off the street and into a car. The fact that the eldest of three children was also taken also did not make sense.
I knew then they were not telling the truth.

For me it was 4th of may...the 'jemmied shutter' did the trick. I have never believed a word they utter after that.

I thought she had walked out looking for her parents and drowned.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
It's hard now to remember what my first impressions were. The name of Ben Needham was mentioned early on and I do recall hoping that, unlike him, we would find out what happened to Madeleine.
Now I'm sure that she wasn't abducted by a stranger.
There's no evidence that Ben was either.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
It must have been 4th May for me too - it was certainly the first radio news item that I heard on the subject.
I was horrified that a young child had gone missing on holiday.
Then I heard that her parents were 'dining' and the kids had been left alone.
And that her parents were doctors.
I was doing some household chores and I dropped everything to cogitate.
Would a tradesman show such scant regard for his tools? No.
Would a gardener show such scant regard for the plants in his care? No.
So why would a pair of doctors, whose whole raison d'être is to heal bodies and save lives have such scant regard for their own flesh and blood?
My jaw dropped.
And after I picked it up off the floor, I made a mental note to follow this case closely because in my mind it was already stinking to high heaven.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
For me, it was one of my students (I was still a teacher then). I went into the class and all the kids were talking about it, and about "how it was just like dining in your back garden". One of the kids said something like, "no it isn't, it was miles away and behind a big wall" and so I went and looked out of curiosity. Up until that point, I had believed the McCanns.
Then I discovered that the shutters had not, in fact, been "jemmied". Two outright lies in quick succession. Made me wonder what other lies had been told. This would have been round about May 10th. My belief in the McCanns' story lasted less than a week.

Well done to that child for rumbling the McCanns a lot sooner than I did!
I gave them the benefit of the doubt for about two years as I wasn't aware of the information on the Internet until then.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
I remember reading on BBC News that a small child had disappeared from "a hotel" in Portugal, so I looked for news. My first impression of the McCanns was one of thinking that they didn't seem to be congruent in their expression of emotion. It was that first interview outside the apartment block, where Gerry was reading from a piece of paper. Usually, I pick up on emotions and can feel for people in the situation the McCanns were trying to persuade us that they were in, but nothing was conveying itself to me. Gerry read from his piece of paper and Kate made a letter box of her mouth to simulate strong emotion. I just felt that they were very shallow people, that they were faking it, and decided to find out more about the circumstances. I didn't believe them from the start and then finding that the shutters had not been "jemmied," and that they had not gone out to search for Madeleine confirmed my suspicions.
Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
I had my suspicions as soon as I heard they left the three young children alone in the apartment as I couldn't imagine doing that. Then when the lie about the jemmied shutters came out my doubts increased. I found the Mirror forum around two weeks into the case and was glad I wasn't the only one asking questions.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
For me, it was Murat being put to one side. That is when I started to study more closely the McCann story and the inconsistencies. Up until that point all I felt was angry that two professional and intelligent individuals could have left three children alone, but believed the Police had a good suspect in Robert Murat. Then this changed and then I started to read that it wasn't just that one night of the 3rd, it was previous evenings as well and for longer periods of time, as they were seen out up until 1 in the morning by witnesses. Then I realised they had been given the freedom to get their heads together and produce an agreed timeline by the GNR, despite GNR observations that the couple McCann were acting strange and appearing to cry without tears. I curse this timeline and the fact they had this freedom to all sit down and think about it and to get their stories straight. Then as others have said about the shutters. Just so many doubts by this point in time.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
I first heard about Madeleine on Canadian TV. There were very few details other than her parents were Doctors and had been dining "nearby" when she went missing. Because she was described as being three years old, I assumed that "nearby" meant that at least as good parents they were under the same roof - and after all, her parents were Doctors!!!
After a couple of days I decided to turn to the internet and began reading the reports in UK newspapers. I discovered that "nearby" was a considerable distance away from where the good Doctors left three children under the age of four alone while they dined with friends. That did not meet the smell test for me and, while I thought Madeleine might just have wandered off, I was highly suspicious.
I began reading the Mirror Forum and discovered a lot of people felt the same way I did - suspicious of the parents. As more details became available - the parents had never actually searched the night Madeleine was reported missing, the Fund (for legal purposes, among other things), the Rome visit, Gerry's trip to the U.S., someone who quit a Government job to become "their" (not Madeleine's) official spokesman, I became (and remain) convinced the McCanns will leave no stone unturned to hide their role in the "disappearance" of Madeleine.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
Since the first day for me. I was right on Huntley, Andrews, Matthews and the Philpotts. The fact they didn't think they had done anything wrong seemed very strange and then the shutters jemmied and not jemmied. The first reaction surely would be that she had woken and wandered out the apartment trying to find them? They were adamant from the first minute that she had been abducted. Also washing the Cuddle Cat if it was her favourite toy. Would be very strange to wash your child's scent off a loved toy. Just my opinion of course.

When I saw their ear splitting grins coming out of church. They looked as if they'd won the lottery. I was totally shocked.

Same here Lioned. I well remember seeing the news report with the Mccanns, we looked at each other and said virtually at the same time "those parents know what has happened to that child". I didn´t believe a word they said then and I most certainly don´t believe a word they say now.

Re: When did I first doubt Madeline McCann's parents?
I was a bit late cottoning on - it was around June when that German interviewer asked if they were involved and it made the top item on itv lunchtime news. Previously I'd put their coldness down to shock and didn't see much of them on tv. Then there was the weekend when Gerry saved someone on the plane and had his wallet pinched. Then I checked the net and found the Mirror forum and then 3As and I was hooked.
Can't believe that we're all still here 7 years later! Just praying that now, at long last, the endgame could be happening. Got 7 years of housework to catch up on - they say once dust's reached 2 inches it doesn't get any worse.
