Looking at the terrain, I would have thought that Jisr ash Shugur was a more strategic target controlling as it does a crossroads, one of which leads to Turkey. Then again Latakia does have a number of advantages as well de[pending it seems on how many fighters they have available.

If they have the contents of yet another army base available to them through their partners al Nusra, and the numbers of men then controlling both places does give them enormous advantages. A few fast armed boats of the type that used to be called MTB's could be used against Israel.

As you said earlier they seem to be getting everywhere. I believe it is a global problem, and must be tackled globally.

I would much prefer the doubting Thomase's , and our western leaders to be right, but sadly I don't believe they are.

Yes Badboy, I heard that one as well. I can only assume Cameron is no longer sponsoring their entry into the EU, particularly as it seems all the polls were wrong, and there is no brake on him now. Not that I believe the Lib. Dems. were in any way effective but at least he had to seem to pander to them from ime to time.

I think you are right in that this year will prove crucial. Much will depend I think on the numbers defecting,, to join these terrorist groups, and the development of an effective global strategy to counter it.

Good evening badboy. The forces of Isis certainly do seem to have a capacity for popping up in once "clean" areas. An article in the Clarion offers what at first glance seem to fully explain why regime forces fight badly, while the IDF when pushed into conflict fight superbly well.

This staff officer, once advisor to the Omani armed forces, puts it down almost wholly to tribalism, and the officer class. Operation a system almost as rigid as the Indian caste system. The officers don't consider the men at all, and the men respond in kind, whereas the glue which holds it all together namely the NCO's hardly exist and are ineffectual when they do.

So that explains it, or does it? The Indian Caste system is the most rigid and unbending in the world, yet they have fought and fought well over time.

During the wars with Israel, there is no doubt they were "stiffened" by Russian "observers" surely they were not infected with this ennui. Yet there is no evidence of them performing above average.

ISIS itself is riddled with the same caste system, lack of NCO authority, and inefficient officers, but at the moment seem unstoppable.

The IDF which boasts as many Arabs in it's ranks as Jews, as has been mentioned when forced to do so, fight superbly.

I have a feeling that the answer is too simple, and the true reasoning lies elsewhere.

My problem with that is were they "dazzled" by the promise of a true Muslim state (as ISIS portrayed themselves) and when they found out that it just wasn't like that had a complete change of heart.

The other possibility is that being "British" or "French" or whatever and having the right to live in that country without any interference they are coming back as "sleepers". I don't say they are, but it is a possibility one that I'm sure our security services have considered especially when I heard an item last night that the police are arresting on average one a day for terrorist related offences.

As you say that aspect may be wrong, and I sincerely hope it is, but in this day and age we just don't know.

I don't think there is much doubt badboy. if they overrun the site they will loot all they can, and destroy the rest. Proving once more (as if any more proof were needed) that they are nothing but barbarians.

in actual fact they (ISIS) can make out as good a case for leaving them intact as the so called case for destroying them (after looting what they can of course) It could be said that the ones who built these temples etc. etc. were the true barbarians, before the prophet came along to show them the true path.

Yes Badboy, The situation is very confusing because neither side is able to tell the truth (not that any side tells the truth in a wartime scenario) complicated by the extreme difficulty in getting any news out of any kind, slanted or not. Knowing what they do to journalists, that isn't surprising.

They will presumably bring up more fighters, and/or behead a few more prisoners to psychologically upset those fighting against them.

The trouble being of course that it is extremely difficult to get any accurate coverage, especially since the barbaric way they treat journalists became known. How much truth there is, no one knows. he could be at death's door, even already dead, and they would still say he's doing well if it suits them.

They are in a win - win situation anyway. If he dies it is the will of their God and he becomes a martyr and if he lives, that is also the will of their God, and in a manner of speaking, he becomes even greater (in their eyes that is)

Given that the two main sects of Islam; Sunni, and Shi'ite come from the argument over who should have ben Caliph after Mohammed, I wonder if this will found other sects based on him being Caliph, with others saying no he isn't The real caliph is leading us.
