COPPER thefts increasing in uk

It is estimated that there is £770 million pound worth of damage to the railway system last year as a result of copper thefts.
there have also been thefts from bt sites as well as electricity sub stations.

IT IS SAID THAT A LOT GOES TO INDIA AND CHINA WHERE THEY IS AN INCREASING DEMAND FOR COPPER IN ELECTRICAL LINES LIKE TRAINS, POWER LINES/GRIDS? ETC AS THESE COUNTRIES EXPAND.
COPPER PRICES ARE ABOUT £4-6,000 PER TON.
COPPER THEFTS ARE MORE COMMON IN NORTHEAST ENGLAND,YESTERDAY I READ AN ARTICLE IN GUARDIAN ABOUT `COPPER THEFT CENTRAL' IN SHEFFIELD WHERE A LOT OF RAILWAY LINES CONVERGE.

Since their are not many churches left with lead roofs we can only assume that the railway is the next best thing.



At least they don't have to climb up ladders to steal it!

LOUISIANA HAS HAD PEOPLE GOING TO NEWLY BUILT HOMES STEALING THE COPPER INSIDE.
FORT WORTH IS SPENDING $110,000 PER YEAR BECAUSE THIEVES ARE STEALING IT FROM STRREETLIGHTS.
SEVERAL DEATHS HAVE OCCURED, SOME USE TOOLS TO CUT THROUGH LIVE WIRES,ONE DEATH OCCURED IN WEST VIRGINIA,FIRES HAVE BREAKEN OUT BECAUSE OF COPPER THEFTS.
HOPE THE COPPER THEFTS DON'T TARGET THE COPPER PIPES OUTSIDE MY FLAT,OTHERWISE A GAS EXPLOSION MIGHT HAPPEN.(I THINK THEY ARE COPPER PIPES)

The price of metal has gone through the roof in the last few years that's why (and continues to go up almost daily).

We have metal skips at work which are contracted to a firm, but we have travellers calling in at least once a week asking to take it away. On a few occasions they've come back to pinch the metal in it anyway.


Take it straight to a scrap yard - no questions asked - and receive cash for it.

Where I live we have gardens outside which is chained in and bit by bit the chains are disappearing!!

Just shows the level of dishonesty Britain has reached, never mind if a Train is derailed and people killed . I can"t ever remember when I was growing up
and people had b***er all , you could leave your back door unlocked and there wasn"t a danger of your House being burgled.

Why would anyone want to steal a Policeman ?

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE METAL COPPER(1/2P PIECES ARE MADE OF THEM SUPPOSEDLY.
metal thiefs seems to be all over the place,a train in netherlands(2003?)got derailed,whole steel bridges have disappeared in places like russia,5 billion rand worth of copper or other metal thiefs occurs in south africa every year, american states(usa)seems to have a lot of this problems,even big bells from buddhist temples have been stolen.

My local scrap merchant wont take stuff from 'Pikies' anymore and has a big notice up saying NO BT/RAIL CABLES ETC.

I took a sack of copper and brass to him and he gave me 150 squid for it so its a good price at the moment.

DELAY IN TRAINS FROM WATERLOO STATION YESTERDAY CAUSED BY POSSIBLE METAL THEFT OR WAS IT JUST VANDALISM ON LINE BETWEEN WOKING AND FARNBOROUGH

just saw on road wars someone who was caught with some bt cables,worth about £300

I saw on Sky recently that one of these lads got burnt stealing electric cable - he was burnt on both hands and his face. He said he had learned his lesson now. Bit late!

I think even in the War Years when people really were poor, crime was never as high as this and certainly not to put other peoples lives at risk.

THERE WAS A CASE RECENTLY IN SOLIHULL WHERE THIEVES WERE ALMOST KILLED IN A ELECTRICITY SUB-STATION.
METAL THEFTS HAPPENED 15 TIMES A DAY IN THE MIDLANDS,CAUSING TRAIN DELAYS IN SOME CASES.
IN YORKSHIRE,POSTBOXES HAVE BEEN STOLEN WHEREAS IN USA AIR CONDITIONERS AS WELL AS TOILET SEATS HAVE BEEN STOLEN AS PART OF METAL THEFTS.

Badboy, it shows the state of the World economically that thefts of this kind are becoming commonplace.

EVEN CARS HAVE BEEN STOLEN FOR THEIR METAL

Great Article kitti....but what"s it got to do with Copper theft. It would have got more views if it had been posted in the Sports section.

I used to watch the Darts International Matches good fun, but since it has always been a Pub game it"s no wonder the Contestants had "Beer Bellies".

Wait until all these cuts in Public spending take affect, someone recently likened the effect to the great depression of the 1920"s. Hope it"s not that bad.

The down side of course is that a church roof usually doesn't have high voltage travelling through it.

True Panda, but back then people had respect for each other. Nowadays everyone is out for themselves, it's always someone else's fault and of course 'everyone's doing it', which follows that they must do it too.
