I would have thought the family would quietly step in with help if money were an issue to staying on in Portugal, so that the parents would be able to concentrate on searching for their child. But Kate and Gerry did not search for Madeleine. They saw the Pope and they did a grand European tour.
There is a quote from John McCann that they were 'owed favours' and they called them in --
Not so popular then that those owing favours to the McCann family would wish to help unasked in finding Maddie?
John McCann isn't the only one to mention people owing favours to the McCanns. Shortly before the McCanns were made arguidos. Kate's Uncle Brian (Kennedy) was outside the McCanns home, giving an interview to the Leicester Mercury. He said that his niece and her husband, had access to people in 'high places', that the ordinary person didn't have access to. He said that if they were to face charges, they would call in favours they were owed from these people.
Kennedy also asked for donations, to pay for the McCanns living expenses in PDL and their mounting bills in their Rothley home.
Kennedy had a nerve, when he implied, that his niece and her husband, had access to people in 'high places', because of their social standing. His niece and her husband only have access to people in 'high places', because they, along with the people in 'high places', share a grubby little secret.
The grubby little secret they all share, is denying Madeleine the justice she deserves and leaving Sean and Amelie at risk of mental harm, from their parents brainwashing.

One wonders what "favours" were owed to the McCann family by someone like Gordon Brown.
It does have a hint of blackmail about it, I must say. Considering the McCanns are originally from the Gorbals, it almost sounds in character for a 1950's crime boss.
I think they're from Govan rather than the Gorbals, but definitely not the Gorbals
Anna the McCann's are from Govanhill that's a bit away from Govan, I lived in Govan & Queenspark which is near Govanhill

Thanks. I knew it wasn't Govan itself!

Sorry, my information came from someone who's mother lived in the Gorbals so clearly not correct.
Still, some of that family wouldn't be out of place there.

My father was born and brought up in the Gorbals and I spent a lot of time there as a child. The people I knew there had a lot more integrity than the McCann family.

I've never been there, I was told by the person I mentioned above, that it was a poor and crime-ridden area with terrible housing.
As you said about Eileen M:'When people had pay packets, Eileen McCann was probably the matriarch who had the packets handed over on a Friday night, who dolled out the spending money and stacked the cash in savings accounts. I can see her with a rubber band round a few bank books! Growing up around working-class people in Glasgow I met people like her.'
So the McCanns lived in a 'better' area? I live in an area which used to be poor, built for factory workers - some people here were born in the house they still live in - in their nineties and eighties now. Now there are young professionals, rental properties, etc. I live next door to an 89 yr old housepainter, opposite lives an IT specialist, other young professionals, young families on the way up, yet in the 70's the council nearly flattened the whole area, now it's a conservation area.
The older residents think nothing of putting a few chairs on the pavement when it's sunny and having a chat with the other old timers. It's lovely.
I just commented on the 'roots' as I think they're always important. Gerry seems to have worked hard to get away from them. When Eileen and Co. came to PdL they were packed off within days, leaving on the 8th. Where I would have thought the grandmother taking care of the twins for a few weeks would be the more natural course of events?

The McCanns came from Newlands.
Oh, and the Gorbals was not the slum that it was made out to be, although some parts were pretty rough, same as anywhere I suppose.
And yes, Govanhill is miles away from Govan.
