Yes.Odd indeed.

"I found ALL the 'people of interest' in Madeleine case, on my very, very last day at work, says SY TOP detective"

Good job he never retired on Thursday, or we wouldn't have a clue about all these 'persons of interest'

And
"please, please, will everyone now FORGET that it was me, DCS Hamish Campbell, that 'fitted up' Barry George and got that totally INNOCENT man sent to prison for EIGHT years for a crime he did not commit"

It is understood high-level discussions have taken place in the UK about the possibility of Scotland Yard launching its own investigation. British police do not have jurisdiction in Portugal, but they have the right to investigate and prosecute any British suspects linked to Madeleine’s disappearance. Should the Met decide to launch its own investigation, it is likely to send a formal letter of request to the Portuguese authorities – seeking its assistance in its inquiries.

Last night a Yard spokesman confirmed a high-level delegation of officers travelled to Portugal in March, but he refused to comment on what discussions took place.

Police identify new Madeleine McCann suspects

Kate and Gerry McCann have welcomed news that detectives from Scotland Yard
had identified a number of suspects who could be responsible for their
daughter’s abduction.

Detectives conducting a review of the case have produced a list of people who
they say are of “interest to the inquiry” and should be questioned.

Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, the head of Scotland Yard’s
Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said the Portuguese authorities should now
reopen its investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance six years ago.

He said the Met’s review, dubbed Operation Grange, had identified "both
investigative and forensic opportunities" and said the people of interest could
be explored further, if only to be eliminated.

Kate and Gerry McCann expressed their gratitude to the British police and
said they were encouraged by the developments.

Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry remain very, very
pleased with the work that Scotland Yard are doing and have been encouraged by
Operation Grange from the day it began.

"Beyond that, they simply will not comment on what are police operational
matters."

Madeleine went missing from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on
the Algarve on 3 May 2007.

Her disappearance became the subject of intense international publicity, but
no sign of her was ever found and the Portuguese police shelved its
investigation amid much criticism in 2008.

In 2011 following a campaign by the McCann family, the Prime Minister, David
Cameron, ordered a review of the investigation to be led by Scotland Yard.

A team of 30 officers re-examined thousands of documents, files and other
pieces of evidence in a bid to establish some new lines of inquiry.

DCS Campbell praised the progress made by the team and said it had done a
“fantastic” job identifying further investigative and forensic opportunities.

He said it was “perfectly probable” that information which could identify the
suspect responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance was already within the
Portuguese files.

He added: “We have to ask ourselves why are cases unsolved and, on many
occasions, we find we passed the suspects by already and the suspect sits within
our system.

"The purpose of the review was to look at the case with fresh eyes and there
is always real benefit in doing so. The review has further identified both
investigative and forensic opportunities to support the Portuguese.

"There is more than a handful of people of interest which could be explored
further if only to be eliminated.

"The key things are to investigate the case and our work is happening to
support the Portuguese."

Earlier this month the McCanns said they were encouraged by the news that
three women who had been missing in the United States for a decade were found
alive and well in Cleveland, Ohio.

In a statement, the couple said: "Their recovery is also further evidence
that children are sometimes abducted and kept for long periods. So we ask the
public to remain vigilant in the ongoing search for Madeleine."

DCS Campbell said: “The Portuguese hopefully will pursue some of these
investigative opportunities with our assistance. There is room for further work
and collaboration to resolve the case.”

He added “You only have to look at the case in Cleveland, Ohio, and the
European cases. Of course, there is a possibility she is alive, you cannot
exclude it. But the key is to investigate the case and, alive or dead, we should
be able to try and discern what happened.”

He added: “The purpose of the review is to look at it with fresh eyes…there
has been real benefit in doing it.”

The Scotland Yard review is estimated to have cost around £2 million.

Various Suspects in the Disappearance of Maddie are Identified

English authorities reveal new developments a few days after the sixth year anniversary the girl’s disappearance. Stephen Birch, a South-African private investigator, says that “it is all part of a staging”.

By:José Maria Pinheiro

Scotland Yard of the British police has identified a considerable number of potential suspects related to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, after the Prime Minister, David Cameron, ordered a review of the case, according to the British press.

Details about the potential suspects have not been released, however their identification has led to a team of almost 40 English officers to travel to Portugal on several occasions.

“Our objectives are to investigate the case and to provide support to the Portuguese police”, Andy Redwood stated to the British newspaper “The Guardian”.

Little “Maddie” disappeared on 3rd May 2007, from Praia da Luz in Portugal. The case was archived by the national authorities in 2008, a decision that was highly criticised at the time.

Stephen Birch talks of a staging

“It is no more than a staging by the British government”, says Stephen Birch, a South African businessman who carried out one of the main private investigations into the Madeleine McCann case. “It is rather a means of maintaining the bilateral agreement between the two countries, which translates into almost 8 million euros in the form of trade exchanges”.

Birch says that he setting up an investigation page on Internet, as he does not believe in the capacities of the British authorities: “The site will be in Portuguese and people will have the opportunity to send or publish information that they consider to be relevant to the case”, the businessman told CM. Since last year Stephen Birch has claimed that “the girl is dead and buried in the grounds belonging to Robert Murat’s house”, although he admits that the owner “could be unaware of this”. What is clear is that Birch, in spite of having been in Murat’s property with a sonar device and having said that he the found the girl’s remains, has never managed to make the authorities believe his theory and excavate the site.

I think FBI calls that 'owning' the statement or the situation. l

Qualifications weaken a statement. So very, very makes it that much weaker.

'No' or 'No, I didn't'.

The Mail on the ball as usual. Unless there has been a very recent change in the law, British citizens can only be tried in the English courts for a very limited range of offences if committed abroad.

I think DCS Campbell is trying to persuade the Portugese to re-open the case to justify SY spending £4.25 and two years on this review. They havn't just come up with these names and probably gave them to the Portugese a while ago but the Portugese did not accept that there was suffcient evidence to go to Trial.

morning all -wish portugal would reopen the case look at the list and go nah we are no longer looking at any strangers regarding this case its closed -how many years is this going to be going on ?
if madeleine was taken by a loving couple to order -- just say she was --would they get her back -- would she want to go back -- lets remember if that was the case --why didnt they take one of the twins -with no real memory a baby instead they took madeleine -- so they have been watching the group and came up with yes we will pick madeleine not one of the other little girls -- where did they do their looking in the creache because thats where they spent most of their holiday

now reason 2 abduction by a pedo gang and madeleine is unharmed omg this is scotland yard talking ? they will know how pedos work and what chances there is of poor madeline still being alive -very slim id say

then we have number 3 no abduction --

I'm wondering why Portugal don't say anything...not a peep from them.

I hope it's because they either have more integrity than our police or they are keeping tight lipped because this case may come to trial and due to secrecy.

If there are 20 suspects within the files then the mccanns and their mates MUST be part off it and the rest off the 20 must know something more about madeleines disappearance and have lied about her whereabouts...and I'm not talking about workers etc that were in pdl at the time.

@ cass......there is no evidence that Madeleine was abducted but the theory was part of the final Report together with "Madeleine died in 5a."
I think it is significant that all the Press have picked up on this DCI's retirement speech and that the Daily Express sent James Murray over to interview Murat. However, since the Portugese have not said a word when one would think SY had already discussed their findings with thhe Portugese before making this news public , I suspect SY maybe have received a rollicking from Cameron about the escalating cost of this review and DCI Campbell has replied in public.

Very very pleased about what exactly. Nothing has changed. Madeleine is nowhere nearer to being found than she was six years ago. it's all getting a bit mad. And what exactly is this news. Nothing as usual. Twenty suspects. Surely somebody must have noticed a gang of twenty people snatching a child. Apparently not.

Cass, I don't think the British Justice System could take over, any action needs to come fromm Portugal. However, there is one avenue the Police refuse to investigate and that is the fund. The company was registered in Britain and there is plenty of evidence to investigate that.

Although the press is still pushing the stranger abduction story, if you can read between the lines, it looks like the SY investigation is now picking up where the Portuguese investigation stopped.
We all heard that the Portuguese investigation was stopped and shelved due to political pressure and at that time there were indeed still some leads and people of interest. As Amaral said.
Among them the Smith family. A handfull I can imagine.

I was just watching Sky News and saw the end of the report on Maddie. I think it said Brunt was in Portugal.

I wonder if they mean a dozen people who could be involved. Or a dozen people who might give vital evidence. Like the Smiths.
