Seems the police are investigating a possible link between Jo's murder and an unsolved 1974 crime:

More than 16,000 people were interviewed by police as part of the Glenis Carruthers investigation
It's a bit of a none story though inasmuch as the police already mentioned the possibility several days ago. This is now the relatives repeating that information. A remarkable number of people were interviewed at that time though, which just goes to show the extent of investigations of this kind. Let us hope that 30 years on, advances in forensic science and computer-aided investigation techniques produce a result in this case.

Reading the Telegraph article it still seems they are pointing a finger generally in the direction of Mr J (even if in a very subtle manner). He had recently taken up his post at Clifton in 1974, he would have been in his 20's and I guess from the earlier published school photographs, fairly long hair. Do we know his height? He didn't look particulary tall. Luckily for Mr J the zoo witness didn't notice any blue rinse.

Yes, that's what struck me too Chris. J. must have been in his 20s then and he moved to Bristol in 1967 and has, as far as I know, been there ever since..If the long-haired man in his 20s was disturbed, it explains why there was no attempt to hide Glenis' body. It's pretty alarming that a crime like this can be committed in the middle of a city, be witnessed by someone and still nobody ever be arrested..Hopefully forensics will help Jo's murder be solved as it must be so difficult for families to live with the knowledge that their loved one`s killer is still out there unpunished...
T4Two, it wasn't the first time I'd read this story either and I wonder why the Telegraph is repeating it ? Do they know more about J. than we do or it is just another 'nice juicy story' ?

Although it is in a city the area around Bristol Zoo is quite open with an expanse of park land. From memory the road from the zoo down to the gorge is pretty undeveloped. It is only once you move towards Clifton itself (behind the zoo) it becomes more built up.

Joanna Yeates murder: groundsman may have heard killer
A groundsman working late around the time Joanna Yeates disappeared may have heard the killer trying to dispose of her body, the Daily Telegraph has learned.

By Martin Evans, and Gordon Rayner 6:30AM GMT 07 Jan 2011
2 Comments
The man, who is based at one of the sports clubs bordering Longwood Lane in Failand, where Miss Yeates’s body was dumped, heard a car pull up on the secluded road on one of the nights after she disappeared.
Concerned that someone might lost or struggling in the icy conditions he approached the vehicle which he was unable to see clearly because of a large hedgerow.
The man told police he heard the driver get out of the car and open the boot or hatchback.
But as he moved closer to offer assistance, the driver suddenly closed the boot, got back into the car and drove away.
The groundsman told a friend he thought nothing of the incident at the time, but later realised its possible significance when he heard Miss Yeates’s body had been discovered close to the spot on Christmas Day.
He passed on the information to Avon and Somerset Police who earlier this week issued an urgent appeal for the driver of a light coloured 4x4 vehicle to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones said: "This 4x4 may be completely unconnected but I urge anyone in that car or any other driver in the vicinity that night to come forward.”
The man told a friend: “I was working late at the sports club because of the weather when I heard a car pull up and stop. It was very icy that night and I thought perhaps they were struggling with the conditions.
“I couldn’t see the car because there was a large hedge in the way but I went over to see if I could help.
“I heard the driver door close as if someone had got out and then heard what sounded like the boot or hatchback being opened.
“At the time I thought they must have broken down. But as I walked towards the gate to see if I could help I heard the boot and door close again and the car drove away.
“I just went back to work and thought nothing more of it. It was only when I heard about Jo’s body being found on Longwood Lane that I went forward and told the police what I had heard. They took all the information down and that was the last I heard of it.”
Detectives are uncertain when Miss Yeates’s body was left in Longwood Lane, but are investigating the theory that heavy snowfall in early hours of Saturday 18 December could have played a part in concealing her remains.
Longwood Lane in the village of Failand, North Somerset, is surrounded on all sides by sports fields and a large quarry.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police last night refused to comment on the matter.
The spokesman said: “We would not comment on matters such as this related to the investigation.”

its not a non story... Did you read the most significant part... ???
[quote]
its impossible for us to speculate on whether the two cases are linked but clearly there are
some similarities.” Miss Carruthers, who was studying to be a
teacher, was found dead just outside Bristol
She had been a guest at the 21st birthday party
of her friend Sandra Hardyman, and had been
due to spend the night at her home when she
left the party unnoticed, possibly to make a call
from a nearby phone box. In a bizarre twist of fate, Geoffrey Hardyman,
who is Sandra Hardyman’s first cousin once removed, now lives above Joanna Yeates’s flat, which is around 350 yards from where the
party was taking place. He has been a vocal supporter of his friend
and former colleague Christopher Jefferies,
Miss Yeates’s landlord, who also lives in the same building and is currently the only person
to be arrested on suspicion of murdering the
architect. Earlier this week Mr Hardyman, 78, a retired
classics master at Clifton College, suggested
that Mr Jefferies had been “pounced on” by the police because they were under pressure to
make an arrest [\quote]
People here have drawn weaker conclusions!
What was geoffrey hardyman doing that night? Is he the guy who there was a picture of who helped geoff with his car?
Perhaps he got to an age where he thought justice should catch up with him!

Re: jo yeates - Updated:Tabak charged with murder
Perhap's the pizza was taken as the perpetrator did not want links to Jo beginning in Tesco's at that time, and did not know or realise about the overhead camera that caught Jo on the Camera.
Eye Witnesses could have come forward and reported seeing Jo in the Store, but then that is not 100%.
Was the perpetrator in the vicinity on foot or in a car?, whatever Jo had purchased would have been taken by the Perpetrator, because the Tesco Store, the purchase of the pizza, and near surrounding Area were the link to him and Jo, and in a panic forgot the receipt for the pizza.

Media Report.
Jo Yeates murder police question pub customers.
Police investigating the murder of Jo Yeates are questioning customers at the pub she visited on the night she vanished.
Miss Yeates, 25, went to the Bristol Ram pub in Park Street on 17 December before walking back to her flat in the Clifton area of the Bristol.
It is known the landscape architect visited three shops on the way home.
Earlier a national newspaper said it was offering a £50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
Detectives from Avon and Somerset Police hope by speaking to customers this may yield further clues into the investigation.
It is believed Jo Yeates would have walked up Park Street - a busy road close to the city centre - before walking towards the Tesco Express store in Clifton where she bought a pizza.
Officers are trying to find out whether anyone followed her to her home in Canynge Road - a walk of about one mile.
She was reported missing by her boyfriend Greg Reardon on 19 December after he returned home from a weekend away.
Her snow-covered body was discovered on Christmas Day in Longwood Lane, near Bristol.
A post-mortem examination revealed she had been strangled.
Miss Yeates had been drinking with colleagues in the Bristol Ram on Park Street
Detectives still do not know where or when Miss Yeates died and forensic examinations are continuing at the flat.
Last week, Crimestoppers offered a £10,000 reward for information, and The Sun newspaper has subsequently added its own £50,000 reward.
Miss Yeates' body was clothed but she was not wearing her jacket or her boots and had on only one sock.
Her jacket and boots were found at her home but the sock remains missing.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the force had "resolved their differences" with ITV News following a report on News at Ten on 4 January which was critical of the police investigation.
The report led to ITV reporters being excluded from a media briefing the next day.
Chief Constable Colin Port said he wanted to make it clear the news organisation was welcome to attend future news briefings.
Both parties now regard the matter as closed and will not be making any further comment.
A complaint made by Avon and Somerset Police to Ofcom is no longer being pursued.
Miss Yeates was employed by BDP, in the Clifton area of Bristol, as part of a team designing landscapes for a new hospital in the Southmead area of the city.
Keith Pavey, director of BDP's Bristol studio, said in a statement on the company's website: "We are struggling to come to terms with the tragic and untimely death of our colleague Jo Yeates.
"She was a very popular member of staff and a talented and committed professional with a rewarding career in front of her.
"She will be sorely missed and our heartfelt thoughts go out to her parents, Teresa and David, and to her long-term partner Greg, who is an architect with BDP, also in Bristol.
"We are currently considering the most appropriate way of remembering Jo."
End.

Re: jo yeates - Updated:Tabak charged with murder
The fact that Jo visited two shops lead me to believe she was looking for something specific i.e. the pizza so it could be she'd arranged to eat it with someone too. However, she equally might have planned a quiet evening in on her own and intended to eat it all herself. Maybe I'm rather greedy, but I think I could manage a pizza that size alone after a long day at work!!
Chris thanks for information about the zoo area. I have never been to Bristol so just assumed the murder occurred in a busy place.

Jo apparently sent a text to a male friend who she hadn't seen for about 2 years asking him out for a drink. It was a spur of the moment thing. The text was sent at about 8pm, but went unanswered...I find this a little intriguing as it could lead to speculation about why Jo wanted to see another man while Greg was away.Perhaps things between them were less straight forward than it at first appeared...Of course, he could just be a friend as well.
The male friend, who's not been named, failed to notice the text at the time.

It is all very odd.I am of the opinion she was not killed in the flat,if so it would be too risky and pointless to move the body i would have thought (or maybe thats what someone wants us to think ?).
Either way i think she must have known her killer.

Re: jo yeates - Updated:Tabak charged with murder
I agree that Jo probably knew her killer, but, from what I've read she was unusually fit and would surely have put up a struggle if someone tried to force her out of the flat? Unless there were two people who could overpower her? Jo was apparently a keen rower and, according to her mother, used to challenge her boyfriends to arm wrestle, so we can conclude that she was strong enough not to be an easy victim for any attacker. Perhaps this is why the police have envisaged the possibility of two perpetrators ? It also seems to rule Mr J out, unless he somehow caught her unawares. However, it is also true that any strong man will always be a match for a woman..like you say, it's all very puzzling. It is also very hard to imagine what motive anyone would have to kill Jo..unless she was the victim of an unhinged person whose motives are difficult for normal people to guess.

Family: 'Please Help Us Catch Jo's Killer'
Share
Damien Pearse, Sky News Online
The family of murdered landscape architect Jo Yeates have made a fresh appeal to catch the killer who dumped her body "like a piece of garbage".
In a statement issued by Avon and Somerset Police, they said: "We would like to reiterate the request for any information which could relate to Jo's death, however small or insignificant it might appear.
"That single piece could just enable the police to understand what happened, and identify the killer.
"We are optimistic that the increased reward (of £50,000, offered by The Sun newspaper) will concentrate people's minds on where they were on that Friday night, and what they saw which might be relevant."
Police stop vehicles along Canynge Road in Clifton, Bristol
The appeal came as police revealed they were following up new leads after retracing the 25-year-old landscape architect's last known steps.
Miss Yeates' parents, David, 63, and Theresa, 58, and elder brother Chris, said their lives changed forever the day she disappeared.
"It is now three weeks since Jo disappeared and our lives were changed for ever. The days have merged into a single period of time," the statement said.
"We have still not come to terms with the fact that Jo will never walk through the door and say 'Hi Mum' or 'Hi Dad'.
Fresh Appeal For Help

"We feel a terrible loss and sadness, not just for ourselves, but for Jo, Chris and Greg (Reardon, her boyfriend).
"Inevitably, after seeing the changing news in the papers and on television, we spend a lot of time hypothesising about the events which took Jo from a happy carefree young lady to a body dumped by the side of a road - like a piece of garbage."
For Jo, she never had the opportunity to achieve her full potential, experience all the emotions surrounding getting married, the joy of having children, and the excitement of designing and defining a family home.
Bristol City footballers wear T-shirts appealing for help to catch the killer
"Chris has lost a sister, someone with whom he could share memories with when we are gone, and someone who he knew loved him just as he loved her.
"We had the privilege and pleasure of having Jo with us for around 23 years, before she moved to Bristol.
"We were aware that she was moving into her adult life, and that 'home' would not necessarily be referring to us and where we lived.
"We would be 'first reserve'. We would have it in no other way.

"We gain solace that she had found Greg, and Greg and found her, and that up until the time of her murder it was probably one of the happiest periods of her life."
Officers have questioned over 200 people in various locations across Bristol in an attempt to find further information before her death.
Meanwhile, Bristol City football players in today's match against Sheffield Wednesday were wearing T-shirts advertising The Sun's reward for information leading to the capture of Miss Yeates' killer.
After leaving work on December 17, the landscape architect went to the Ram pub in Bristol city centre with her colleagues from BDP.
This is all so sad for her family and friends. Also..very easy to relate to when you have daughters and their friends .. around that age. Or any age I would think. My heart goes out to them.. I could not even begin to think how i would feel if it was my lovely step-daughter.

It is terribly sad that a young life has been taken in this way. It must be unbearably painful for all of Jo's family and for her boyfriend. All we can hope, is that the police are closer to finding out who committed this cruel crime than they appear to be, although, of course, this can never restore their beloved daughter to her family...

I just read an article saying they might be doing a reconstruction. I also read the other day in one paper that Jo went home and then went out again for the pizza and cider. So don't know if this is a mistake or what.
