The McCanns say that they plan to sue Gonçcalo Amaral because they claim his book has brought them great distress, depression, insomnia and tutti quanti. As many of you have already written, you would think that the disappearence of their daughter would have already been sufficient to put them in the deepest and darkest doldrums.

I have looked at GA's book again. He writes about the course of the investigation using the police files which have been available for approximately a year to journalists and on the internet to the public. According to the McCanns spokesman Kate McCann spends many hours pouring over the same police files trying to find something, anything that might shed light on her daughter's fate.

If this is the case, why are they suing GA for publishing "distressing" material that Kate is already alledgedly perusing every day.

On a serious note I understand he hasn't recieved a writ to date .This makes me wonder if they are waiting for him to publish here so they can sue him in this country and potentially recieve a bigger payout than they would in Portugal .Your observation is spot on but would probably be overlooked in the UK courts .

Gonçalo amaral, as a coordinator of the investigation, had no power of decision or any influence on the course of the investigation. As a public servant, he had to obey the decisions of his superiors, whether he agreed or not. I am wondering then why was it so important to finger him and to get him off of the case, when there were other inspectors who were much more important. It is true that it was difficult not to notice him, considering his disheveled look at that time (needless to say, he has improved his image), and it made him any easy target for the nasty British tabloids.

Perhaps, the reason was to send a message to the other police officers that if they did not toe the line, they could meet the same fate.

The parents of Madeleine McCann are considering suing a former police detective for £1.2m after he wrote a book claiming their daughter is dead.

Kate and Gerry McCann have flown to Portugal to speak to their lawyers about that matter and to get an update on the search for her.

It is the first time Mrs McCann has returned to the country since being quizzed by police over her daughter's disappearance.

The couple have already successfully taken out an injunction against further publication of the book by ex-Portuguese police officer Goncalo Amaral.

Now the McCanns could launch a defamation action against Mr Amaral and his publishers, and are believed to be looking for £1.2m in compensation.

In The Truth Of The Lie, Mr Amaral claims that Madeleine is dead and questions the McCanns' account that she was taken while they were eating with friends nearby.


She's always said she'll do anything necessary to keep the search for Madeleine alive.

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the couple thought the book was "very hostile" and "deterred potential witnesses in the case from coming forward".

Mr Amaral was involved in the initial disappearance investigation but was later taken off the case.

The McCanns, both 41, flew in for a series of meetings with their lawyers and other advisers in Lisbon, spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

"They are planning to be there for one day. They are not going to Praia da Luz," the spokesman went on.

"It's something that has always been daunting for her, but she knew she would go back at some stage - and she's always said she'll do anything necessary to keep the search for Madeleine alive.

"If it means a trip to speak to the Portuguese media, then so be it. But she's always said she'll do anything to keep the inquiry alive."

The injunction also banned Mr Amaral from repeating his claims about Madeleine or her parents, who are from Rothley, Leicestershire.

They were questioned by detectives but their arguido status was later lifted.

Someone said that even if the money had gone to charities the court can still order the amount taken from book sales to be handed over and that Goncalo would have to acquire that amount somehow..
I don't know how true that is because it could have been one of the banned 'legal eagles' that said it.

You know what is odd about this? Before this report, I bet a whole lot of people did not know about Amaral's book. Now you see it reported everywhere, so everyone knows there is a book. Are they not giving publicity to Amaral's claims?

I am afraid that even the people who believe M was abducted believe that she is dead, so I don't think Amaral is stopping anyone searching.

In any case, i think that people want her to be found even if she is dead, so it doesn't make any difference.

Madeleine McCann's parents have been told they could receive more than £1million compensation from a former police detective who claimed their daughter was dead.

Kate and Gerry McCann are pursuing legal action against Goncalo Amaral after winning a gagging order against the publication of his book.

Mrs McCann returned to Portugal on Wednesday for the first time since being quizzed by police over her daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

After the couple met with their Portuguese lawyers and advisers in Lisbon, Mrs McCann said: "Our main worry, obviously, was people believing that Madeleine was dead. If people believe that she is not alive then people will stop looking for her. I just think that it's so vital and so fair for Madeleine that we don't give up on her, that we look for her. We're not going to stop."

Mr McCann said there was no evidence his daughter is dead. He said a team of private investigators is still working on the case and is going through "hundreds of thousands" of pieces of information.

Legal proceedings are ongoing against Mr Amaral but lawyers have told the McCanns their search fund could be in line for a payout worth £1.2million.
